I think that it was more a backlash against the marketing than the material, since a good comic is a good comic regardless of where it's from, and marketing OEL manga as manga just doesn't seem that common anymore.

Or at least at the places I visit, anyway.

No, it was a backlash against OEL manga as in the content because as I said, there are rabid elitist manga fans that weren't happy with non-Japanese making manga-style comic and that hatred and backlash extended to manhwa/webtoons, and manhua back then before manhwa/webtoon became mainstream acceptable.

The funny thing is that even though OEL manga, and manhwa/webtoons has now been accepted by the mainstream. None of the OEL haters (and the haters that were throwing anti-Korean and anti-Chinese vitriol at manhwa and manhua) never apologized many years later for their hatred and bashing and the anti-Korean/anti-Chinese racism when they lashed out against OEL and manhwa and manhua.

Do I think these haters should make a public apology?: They should, racism including racist attack on Chinese and Koreans are unacceptable. It's unacceptable today, and it was unacceptable back then. Funny thing is that those OEL and manhwa haters that love hating on manhwa are the one that would later become K-pop fan and probably reading manhwa, and yet did these people apologized for their past racist insult toward Koreans when they were hating manhwa. I don't think they did.

@mdo7

Expecting an apology for raciest speech is an exercise in futility. People who are raciest don't believe they are wrong or they wouldn't say it. The only people I have ever seen apologize for raciest remarks were politicians or celebrities whose remarks were made public.

I will have to agree with gsilver, the only pushback to OEL manga I saw stopped when TokyoPop quit using that as a marketing term. While I do remember people saying they didn't like manhwa (there wasn't any manhua to speak of and the term was not well known) I don't remember it being stated in raciest terms, just a matter of taste. I don't doubt the validity of your experience but I do think you must of been trolling through some of the rougher areas of the internet. When you attempt to stir things up in a cesspool almost anything can float to the surface.
