There's a new comic out from Radical called Incarnate. I read it and I keep seeing the main character as an Alucard knock off. Have I read too much Hellsing and am just seeing this character I like, or is there some really rip off going on here? The hair, the eyes, the eyes popping out of pure black silhouette, and even the poses and action seem familiar. Am I overly sensitive or is this a genuine case of a knock off?

If I saw a picture of him, I would have believed it to be an Alucard fanart. He looks kind of skinny and younger but the face is a perfect match in several panels.

Right now I'm looking for panels with specific and similar poses. I've found some that are in the ball park, but not too close. Though just the energy and motion of the book reminds me of Hellsing in some pages.

I'd wait to see the insides before I call it a knockoff, but that cover is incredibly Hellsing-esque, especially the way everything seems to be moving in a swirl.

Ditto. If I didn't know better, I'd have thought that this was someone's fanfic. That's some blatant plagiarism.

HAHA! I just realized it's by Gene Simmons' son. I also just looked at the preview pages. Yea, someone was definitely reading Hellsing before drawing this. The insides look like anime fanart, which isn't a good look for a comic book.

Found a video interview with the creator... and his rock star dad.
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=22425

It was "originally going to be a vampire comic", but he decided to create an 'original' set of creatures called ruminants. They also said he went off into "the Japanese stuff" and cite Guyver and Berserk. Then Gene says he doesn't know where he got his stuff from.. Hmmm. I think I got an idea. "It's an American manga because that's where it is." "I'm just trying to imitate Japanese stuff. It's just the style I naturally draw in." "Spawn would be cool, but that's creator owned. By the way I don't anyone drawing mine." (ha.) Then they talk about Watchmen in an odd light. (Though credit for knowing Charlton and who Question is.)

Color me not impressed with the origins of the book. This is what happens when you're dad's a rock star and you end up on a reality TV show, then get into comics. At least Hellsing's Hirano.. well.. he started drawing porn comics. Nevermind.

Oh and someone on another board said one of the characters looked like one from Bleach.

I was thinking Bleach too. Though I didn't know the characters enough. Is there also a character with a -|- shaped scar on his face with a schythe with a skull in Bleach? Or is that just a generic anime cliche Simmons drew on one of these characters. Really so far this looks like someone's TokyoPop's Rising Stars of Manga Entries, and maybe not one of the winners.

Really, you can't help but think if the kid wasn't Gene Simmon's son and met Todd MacFarline and wasn't on a TV show, he'd be like the hundreds of others out there who haven't been published.

OMG, that is a blatant ripoff off Shinji (from Bleach). He has a pretty distinct smile, too. No one else's teeth in Bleach are drawn with only vertical lines. And that characters eyes also resemble Naruto's when he's in Sage mode.

Eh, I agree, the style does look very Hellsing-ish but well... you can only get so original concerning character designs in manga. It's not hard to pick a random character from a manga and find at least 5 others in various series that look similar. I'll keep back from calling it a rip-off until I read it, but I don't have any high expectations for it.

Edit: Looking at that preview though with the eyeballs in the hands... really does look like an Alucard ripoff. Wouldn't be surprised if it is grounds for a lawsuit right there.

There seems little doubt that this is largely an amalgamation of ideas taken from manga and other sources. I don't know for certain if it goes so far as to be a blatant rip off, but when you take into account other factors it seems somewhat likely. The whole thing kind of screams 'guy makes fan-fictiony story ripping off a bunch of different elements from his favorite comics and uses his famous daddy's connections to get it published.'

It's nothing. It's just that comics/manga are a derivative artform.

NO MUSIC NO DREAM!!

Gene needs to stop trying to have his son make money off the Japanese and do it himself by going back to Japan to face Krauser in a rematch!
