I think I've said it before- I don't really like omnibus volumes of manga very much. I think often times, they look tacky, they're poorly-presented, fragile, etc etc etc.
Well, I'm trying to collect Seven Sea's 'Venus Versus Virus' and it appears volumes 2 and 3 are hard to come by. But they offer the dreaded omnibus version for the first 3 volumes.
So, if I don't want to spend a bunch of time hunting down the first three books, what kind of quality should I expect from buying an omnibus version? My big concern is how fragile it is- it appears to be the same size as their standard releases and over 500 pages long. That, to me, spells fragility and that's just not worth the convenience to me. =/
If anyone's ever had any experience with them, do you think you can help me out?

The early single volumes are "out of print," so yes, they're becoming very hard to find.

The covers are glossy and the paper is forgiving enough that if you treat the book right, you shouldn't have a problem with a broken spine.

I have the KashiMashi omnibuses- they are generally pretty readable, and a great value. Just don't bend them too much while reading as Adam says- it's pretty much the same as reading a paperback novel, many of which are 300-500 pages.
Regular trim omnibuses are just as sturdy as any paperback novel really. You can see all the art just fine, and the books will stick around for a good while.

I feel your pain, I don't really like omnibus either. I was going to get the Venus Versus Virus omnibus but the one at my local Borders already had a broken spine. I bought Del Rey's omnibus for The Wallflower and the only way I could read it was breaking the spine.
Plus it looks out of place on my shelf ><

I decided to just get all the Tetragrammaton Labyrinth volumes today instead ^^;
But thanks guys for answering me so promptly. I'll have to give it some more thought, and maybe see if my local Border's carries any of the omnibuses (they do carry some SS titles- I saw Kashimashi and Dance in The Vampire Bund there) to see how they feel and such. Hopefully, though, by the time I decide, vols 4~8 won't be too rare to find...lol
And yeah, Scormio, for sure that is my big reason for not really being a fan of omnibuses, lol. I'm kind of OCD about my collection looking nice haha

I've never had any problems with the quality of Seven Seas omnibus' before. My only compaint though, it that they dont at least include black-and white versions of the cover art from the individual volumes. Every other omnibus I have (mostly from Viz and Tokyopop) include them.

Some of our omnibus have a b/w cover art gallery in them, and some don't. It totally depends on the book and how many pages we have left to fill after we've included the actual story portion.

We have tentative plans, but they're not set in stone as of yet.
