I was wondering if a few people from this website could take my survey for my senior thesis class (if this is the right place to post something like this). My thesis is about anime culture and whether or not it encourages digital piracy as a method of sharing, etc. My survey is completely anonymous and just asks questions about digital downloading. If some people could take it, that would be really awesome!
Here's the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3YPCKZD Thank you! |

I filled it out. Hope it helps.
Just a suggestion, you might want to ask "what do you think about fansubs/illegal downloads"? Just my thoughts on the subject: As an "old school" anime fan I have always supported the industry in any way I could, within my budget. Be it buying a ton of dub-only VHS tapes (since they were cheaper), buying new DVDs of shows I liked, renting anime from rental stores/Netflix, buying used DVDs of shows I liked, trading in old shows that I stopped liking for newer shows that I did. How do I figure out what to buy? Usually saw it on TV, through rentals, like the creator of the show, borrowed from friends, or just bought it on a whim and ended up really liking it. I have never really seen the point of "keeping up" with the latest releases in Japan. Mostly cause I tend to stick to shorter shows, so I don't have to know what Ichigo is doing right this second (for example). I am a rather patient person, and can wait for something I am interested in to get released in the USA. Heck I have waited over 20 years for certain Godzilla movies to come out on DVD (and they still have not). I realize that people want stuff right this second (the "Instant Gratification Generation" as I call them). However there are now legal means to watch pretty much every "popular" show a couple of hours/days later you can watch it online (usually for a small fee/with commercials). Why does that have to be so hard to understand. These people who do the downloading (and don't ever buy anything) say that they "support" the industry because they think that all "big business" is evil and "holding down" the animators/studios. Try telling that to the actual people involved (and mention that you did not pay for it) and see what happens. They will probably get extremely angry cause you took the money they were going to use to buy food. If these people tried that sort of stuff in the real world, they would get thrown in jail for shoplifting/stealing. If they tried to not pay for something like gas (for example) they would lose their licence, end up in jail, or worse. Sorry for the rather long rant, but this is how I feel on the matter. I am not alone on this by any means. Several anime celebrities such as Greg Ayers, Crispin Freeman, and several others have all voiced their dislike of this ever growing problem of illegal downloads/fansubs. |

Done answering. Good luck with this one btw.
You might want to fix your survey a bit, since you used check boxes which allows multiple options to be chosen, even for questions that need only one. And I just want to clarify, you are focusing on people who use illegal downloads and fansubs, right? I have a question then. If I never download illegally, but my friend does, and I borrow her downloaded files, will that make me a user of illegal downloads or not? I think it's important to note that even if just one source does the fansubbing and downloading, file sharing is all too easy to do, thus the spread of these illegal activities. I don't know how you would account for people who simply borrow these illegal stuff. Some people prefer to do it that way so as not to feel too guilty about the whole thing. But then again, that's almost impossible to quantify so you're probably better off not tackling that. So actually, don't answer the question, it's too confusing. I have no idea what a thesis is but how could i not help a fellow ANN member?
Also excuse the lack of a follow up rant, the survey was enough thinking for me today |

I'm not going to fill this out, but I can give you an advice that the results you get from ANN are throughoutly biased and won't serve as an indicator of anything. These forums attract very specific types of people only. So if you're doing your thesis for a serious purpose you should probably look elsewhere too.

^^Yeah, I've posted it elsewhere, too, and sent it out and all that. I didn't take into account the amount of bias until I got the first round of results from a different forum and went OOPS.
And the survey... yeah... survey monkey is not working too well for me. I've tried editing it a few times to fix various things (including the check boxes) but I guess it didn't turn out too well, haha. Thanks again to everyone who took it! I really do appreciate it! |

What the hell. If this is what your thesis subjects, I'd give you a failing grade right now. In what world do you expect a sub-culture of culture to encourage an activity highly debated right now? Not to be rude, but I'm not filling out this survey. Supply discovery on the link between anime culture and file sharing if you want my participation. I want to see if the discovery is generalizing the target anime demographic which uses the internet vs. common sense dictating access to the internet encourages digital piracy. |

I've read this sentence about 10 times trying to understand the point you're trying to make, but can't. There's an unclarified assumption in there that there is some constant relationship between any given subculture and any questionable activity. Also, your demand that the OP provide a evidence of a link is baffling, as part of the stated purpose is to determine if there is a link. If the OP had such evidence, the survey would be unneeded. |

Uh... you may want to remodel your survey a bit. Perhaps take a look at some of the recent funimation surveys in the retail thread? This survey is a bit
...
What exactly is the scope of your survey? I have a hard time seeing how you're going to draw conclusions "habits of an anime fan" from this. |

I did the survey, it seems fine to me. Based on the responses in this thread I think you should change your thesis to Anime Fans are Uptight.

I've filled out your survey.
I think that your survey should have a place where people can justify why they illegally download anime, as that is the whole point of your thesis. While they do make results easier to collate, tickbox options don't quite manage to convey the subtleties of various thoughts in regards to illegal downloading. Although I do purchase anime that interests me whenever I can (even going so far as to import english-subbed DVDs from America if they are available), there is a lot of anime that has not left Japan's shores as a DVD release, or was released years ago in America and have now gone out of print. These are the type of shows that I download so that I am able to watch. If a company makes an effort to release a DVD version of an anime I am interested in (particularly if I have already downloaded it and enjoyed it enough to watch it all), I like to support their efforts with my money. |

Quite frankly, this is about the same as a bland customer survey, but I suppose it gets you some data.
Filled it of course. |
