First opinion of NGE Adultswim. Im just wondering of peoples first opinion of NGE from those who are watching it for the first time. I have heard so much about it yet I did not have a clue of what to expect.

Mine was "man that was crap" well said that after it ended. Im sure my opinion will change after watching a cupple more epps.

A lot of the hype will probably not filter in to newbies, because the series hasn't aged all that well (it was uber-quality stuff when it first came out, now it's kinda weak, and people have watch so many of it's elements get copied over the years that it almost seems "cliche" in reverse).

Also, the audio seemed pretty aweful, I'd never heard the US dub before, and I was quite content with that.

Ohoni's correct in his comments about how NGE hasn't aged terribly well, but it should also be pointed out that the first episode is arguably the weakest episode in the whole series. Although it shows signs of the greatness the series will eventually achieve, it's also overly melodramatic, doesn't do much to distinguish itself, and features the worst English voice acting in the series (in the roles of the generals).

The series starts picking up with the second episode, where you get the first taste of how different and intense the mecha battles are, and gradually improves over the next several episodes as the characters and circumstances get better-established. Episodes 5 and 6 (the first part that concentrates on Rei, the badly-injured girl) were what really sold me on the series when I first watched it.

And yes, Shinji is a whiny anti-hero, which is one of the main reasons why some anime fans really hate this series. But if you were a 14 year old thrust into the kind of stressful situation that he is with the kind of Issues that he has then you'd probably be whiny, too. Rolling Eyes

And yes, the closing theme really is sung in English even in the original Japanese dub. The female seiyuu take turns singing that old Frank Sinatra standard.

I would also be interested to hear the first impressions of others watching the series for the first time.

I caught this series a little bit before AS started airing it. I think it was sometime during midsummer that I watched the first episode. Now, let's keep in mind that I'm very far from fond of the mecha genre.

...All it took was one episode to hook me. Before I started watching NGE, I was quite unsure what I would think. I always heard about people saying how it was one of the greatest animes created, but I always thought, "How great could it be...? It's mecha." Let's just say that judging a book by it's cover is still the wrong approach.

Maybe it helped that I was watching the Platinum Edition version of the show, but I could still tell it was dated, so I'm thinking there isn't too much of a big difference.

In the end, this show delivers. It has easily made it's way to my "favorite animes of all time" list.

I've heard many good things about this series, but I never was able to get around to checking it out. So I'm glad it's on AS now.

Here are my thoughts on the 1st episode...

I agree that it's a weak episode, mainly from a lack of exciting action, so I'm not completely hooked on it yet; but that might change during the later episodes. I can tell the animation is a little dated, but that doesn't matter to me because I know the show itself is about 10 years old. The English voice acting is pretty good, though it could've been done better in some small parts, but I think it's decent.

Overall, while it hasn't quite hooked me yet, I like it so far. I like the EVA and Angel designs a lot, and the English version is pretty well done. So I'm definitely going to continue watching it on AS.

For being an opening post for an opinion thread, this was awfully weak. Care to actually explain what you liked and disliked instead of merely saying "this sucks?"

I've seen the dub and sub before, so that wasn't new to me. However, the images on the screen seemed really jumpy whenever the shot changed from one angle to another angle. It was really irritating.

Maybe because it's been copied so much, the story might not have aged as well. But the animation definitely hasn't. It's sad that this 10 year old show's animation is still alot better than a large amount of newer anime.

How much improved is the video quality in the Platnium Edition of NGE? I know the boxset comes out next month and i'm hyped to get it.

Much. The colours are richer and there's no jitter. It's very clean, too.

I was talking Misato, actually. Does she improve too?

I did like, BTW, that the full original opening and ending were left 100% intact. Lovely.

Well, presumably, just like the Japanese version we'll get a different version every few episodes. I know I prefered a slightly different take as well (forget the name of it though).

Seriously? I thought it was a little washed out and ugly when compared to modern computer colored and effects laden anime.

Episode 25 is way worse (I'd easily take dated, melodramatic exposition over a bunch of people in a dark room whining for 20-something minutes). Still, things really improve over time. And when I say "really", I mean "Fullmetal Alchemist quality".

hmmm are you serious about that? because i watched like 10eps of this show and i didn't like it all that much, it seemed kinda cliche; but all give it a second chance if it picks up like FMA did

Well, I've been a hardcore Eva fan for many years, owning both the Platnium (i know i spelt that wrong) and the first box set. I didn't notice taht many changes between the dvd's and what was aired on AS. Granted, the first episode dosent have that much "bad stuff" in it alredy. Im probly not going to watch it on AS untill about eps. 15. Thats when things start to get a little resquae (i spelt that wrong too) and im just curious how CN is going to handle it. Im also wondering if there going to air The End of Evangelion. I know some of those mindless AS fans arent going to understand the final two episodes ("you mean we have to think when watch AS. NNNOOOO!!!) Im kinda scared if they do show the movie, how badily it will be cut up. But, so far, AS is doing a good job with Eva. Well, maybee except the advertising. I know people who watch AS every night who didn't know when it would be on.
