i'm interested in certain manga and anime related novels, but im not sure which ones are worth my money. i've read battle royale which i loved and i've read robotech, which i didn't really care for. i was curious as to how well written certain books are and what the target audience is because if it's a middle school book i'd rather not waste my money on it. for starters can people tell me about the GiTS book, Boogiepop and Others , Vampire Hunter D, the .hack novels, and the not yet released love hina book. also if anyone has favorites that they'd like to discuss, please do.
thanks

I'm a fan of Scrapped Princess (anime) so I'm looking forward to the upcoming novel(s?). I figure if the anime was that good, the novel it is based on will be at least as good, probably better as the anime probably had to remove some things.

Well, of what you've mentioned I can give an opinion on the first three Vampire Hunter D novels. Unfortunately, I didn't think they were all that great. They've all had the same basic story so far - D begins a case. He teams up with a plucky young woman who's been physically and/or sexually abused. D does his thing with snide comments from Left Hand along the way, the young woman falls for him when he befriends her, and D gallops off into the sunset after the young woman either dies a tragic death or heads on her way to living happily ever after. I don't think anyone expects Shakespeare, but I didn't think the stories were all that well written in spite of having a few entertaining passages here and there and were too similar too eachother. Please note that I can't vouch for whether the English translation was good - if someone is aware that the stories suffered in translation please feel free to jump in.
I was especially looking forward to "Demon Deathchase" because it's the source material for one of my favorite anime movies, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. One of the things I like about the movie is that D's quarry and rival bounty hunters are neither completely good nor completely evil. In the movie we care about what happens to the Marcus brothers because of their love for Leila and eachother, but in the novel they're utterly repulsive (one of them tries to do good near the end, but it's too little much too late) and have no redeeming qualities whatsoever, which makes them far less interesting and leaves us with too few characters that we can relate to. At least for me, the movie far surpassed the novel and I don't think I'll continue with the books.
As for what I do like, I'm madly in love with the Fruits Basket manga, but from the works you named I'm not certain that's up your alley. Correct me if I'm wrong.

i like fruits basket. my policy is to give all manga a try and if it's well written i usually like it despite its genre. although i have a tendency to lean more towards things that are not "fruits basket-esque", so i can understand why you thought that.

I love Case Closed. It's got a host of lovable characters, and the split personality of Conan and Jimmy. The crime scenes and clues to the answer are sometimes farfetched but they make sense.

Surprisingly, alot of popular manga/anime franchises were originally based on books.
Slayers, Dirty Pair, Full Metal Panic, R.O.D.,Vampire Hunter D, were all based on novels.
If you want source material that became popular anime, I'd most definently go with Slayers. Tokyopop publishes the novels. They're REALLY funny.
If you're looking for novelizations of shows.......well, the best I've ever read, by far, are the Robotech novelizations by Jack McKinney. I know that alot of Robotech fanatics cry foul over EVERY LITTLE MISSHAP, but for christ's sake, people! They didn't really have alot to go on in the first place!
Eitherway, The Robotech novels are now being published in 3-in-1 collections by Del Rey for only $6.99 each.
