This topic is about what happens when you finally see an anime that really is best (or you don’t will ever be topped) and how do you go from there. I mean for myself, I have my top 10 anime and those are great in all. But here my problem my favorite anime of all time is Monster (shocker huh?) and since I finished the series I don’t really know what to watch.
I am not trying to make this sound like a recommendation thread (although it may sound like one) but I feel like I have top out. I don’t know if there is anything out there in the anime world (I am not counting manga, since I don’t read it beside Monster) for me to enjoy. I’ve currently started watching the new .Hack//Root and that is good, but no where near the caliber that is Monster.
My question is has this happen to you (also what series so I can get an idea)? What did you do? Did you give up on Anime for a while, or what? Any advice would be great.
Till next time,

Delta Kiral
Mods. Please change the title as needs be, I couldn't really think of a title to fit my question.

I know what you mean. Ever since I saw Mind Game a year and a half ago, I haven't encountered anything that comes even close to its brilliance. That doesn't mean I still can't enjoy other titles, though. I still loved ParaKiss and Re: Cutie Honey and I'm currently watching Monster whenever I have time (free time is becoming more and more of a luxury for me nowadays); it's very good. None of these are even near the same ball park as Mind Game, but I have to accept the fact that an anime that speaks so clearly to me and is executed so brilliantly won't roll around very often. Right now, though, I have a feeling this little movie is going to Mind Game a run for its money.

Rotate your genre. I watched a harem anime after I watched Monster. Or you can try J-Drama, which is what I'm currently watching. :)

Do it yourself. Just hit the edit button and change what's in the Subject box.

I've had that happen to me a few times.

Recently I started Honey and Clover. After 7 episodes, I quit watching it. It was extremely good and I didn't want to finish it yet. I started and finished Shakugan no Shana. It was all right. Good animation, interesting story, a few memorable songs, a cross over show with many things in it; comedy, drama, romance, fighting. After finishing it though, no big deal. I still felt ever more strongly about just 7 episodes of Honey and Clover than I did about the entirety of Shakugan no Shana.

After completing Shana lastnight, I've started watching H&C again this morning. Just completed the episode where Azathrael's avatar is in; #9. It's tough skipping from perfection to mediocrely good. All in all, the Shanas of the world keep me going day to day, but the Honey and Clovers are what give me a reason to keep looking. Not just in anime of course though, but as a general mindset.

Maybe you never find something better than Monster, but you might find things that are as good but quite different. If anything, try switching genres as was said or just give anime a break for a little while.

I know how to change the Subject, I was just saying if the Mod knew of a better subject title to please change it. Since my question is a little different, then the usual threads. My title isn't exactly
the best, and I figure that a mod would be best to change the subject.

That kinda part of the problem I was really into the typical action genre of anime, (Gundam, FMA, Hellsing Etc etc) and Monster brought me into this new drama/thriller. And now this is the genre that I am so very interested in, but at the same time I am really sorta stuck knowing that Monster is the cream of the crop.

I think that is really interesting that in an Anime you found something, that can make you look for something greater. Whereas with Monster it made me look outside for anything related to the series, (The infamous book, models of characters, hell I almost bought a Japanese version of Another Monster. I don't even read Japanese) and now that the 'high' (not that kind) is gone it put me in this mindset.

Yea I guess you make a point there. I think that it I just accept the fact that there are some anime I am going to enjoy (granted won't be as brillant as Monster) and to just be very selective with my choices, hopefully that will help me get over Monster. Thanks for the advice thus far.

Interesting question. . .I first watched Scrapped Princess over 2 years ago, and I still consider it my favorite anime. I've never felt the need to "go anywhere" from there. Maybe nothing will surpass your favorite anime, but I believe that any worthwhile series can be enjoyed in its own way. Even something dumb like Girls Bravo is good in a "shut your brain off and look at the pretty girls" way. Looking at your My Anime and your top 10 series (ROD, Rurouni Kenshin, Hack//Sign, Last Exile, GiTS:SAC, Gankutsuou, Cowboy Bebop, FMA, NGE, and Monster), it seems that you like series that are somewhat epic/dark action anime. I don't know what your feelings are about other genres, but I'd suggest sampling some of them like Shoujo/Romance, School Life/Comedy, Comedy/Parody, and even the dreaded Shounen Harem. If you want suggestions of specific series, let me know, but I ph3ar teh listing rule...

I am having a somewhat similar problem. I am always in the middle of several different kinds of series, so I can watch an episode or two of any genre (from romance to shounen fighting to magical girl to supernatural thriller, and most things in between) depending on my current mood. However, in the last couple of months I've devoured in rapid progression two excellent slice-of-life dramas, Honey & Clover and BECK. Now I'm left craving for more quality series in this particular genre, but don't know where to turn to (at least before the second season of H&C begins).

Fortunately, I'm still in the middle of one brilliant series, Mushishi, but it caters to a rather different state of mind. In general, I feel that this spring I have suddenly seen a few so excellent anime that I start to wonder how many series can reach the standards they've set, anymore.

And Cloe, I've heard so much praise for Mind Game that it is definitely high on my watching list. How about the other Studio 4°C feature-length film, Princess Arete? Do you know anything about that, is it worth watching? I haven't heard much anything about it, and the ratings seem to vary a lot.

"Is it worth watching?" Well, Cloe replaced her avatar of Mind Game a while ago with Arete Hime. That should have explained everything.

Slightly OT - a message to Cloe: I just remembered the shop where I bought this was named "Miracle" (奇蹟). Quite fitting, wasn't it? Wink

Of course! My avatar is from Princess Arete; in fact, it's the title character herself. I love this film, but I'll admit it's not for everybody. The pacing is very slow and subdued, and the story is a little unorthodox in that it doesn't really follow traditional three act structure. Well... it follows three act structure, but takes a rather long break in the middle to explore side characters and to let you simply absorb the world. This is definitely not a film for the easily distracted. If you are patient, however, and wish to view absolutely gorgeous animation and hear gorgeous music, give it a try.

I definitely recommend it. That comes as no surprise to anyone acquainted with me here, I'm sure. Wink

I wrote my reply just as you did! Anime smile I'm still very jealous about that; the Arete Hime OST is SO beautiful!

Back on topic....

I went through the same problem quite a few times, but everytime I was able to find something that I really enjoyed. What you should do is to look around on the forums, and look for other qualities that would attract you to an anime. Also, it doesn't hurt to have some spontaneouity with your choices. A really good place to find reviews of random anime titles is from Animenfo. There are lots of new reviews done everyday and it's never hard to find a title that you've either missed, or something that's new and interesting. Personally, I came across Honey & Clover, Mushishi, Gungrave, and a few other titles that I don't really remember this way. Also, a good way is to just browse around the forums and someone or something might interest you.

Look around and have fun doing it.
Good luck finding what you're looking for.

I kind of know what you mean, but I'm one of those people that is willing to watch anything so the question of "where to go?" is the next title available. Sure it might not top your favorite all time anime, but isn't anime made for entertainment?

This is the same reason I don't have a "best friend". I cant pick favorites because I enjoy all of their company. Same with anime. Yeah I have some that I love watching more than others, but in the end I am willing to meet new anime because you never know if it will be more entertaining.
