Akira
Perfect Blue
Ninja Scroll
Metropolis
Cowboy Beebop
Vampire Hunter D. /Bloodlust
Demon City Shinjuku
Oh My Goddess
Iria (not really a movie, but still single disc)
Princess Mononoke (or any Miyazaki film)
Wings of Honnemaise
Ghost in the Shell
Green Legend Ran
Jin-Roh
Kite
Patlabor Movies 1,2 or 3
Roujin Z
Voices of a Distant Star
Z.O.E. Idolo
Spriggan
That's all I can think of at the moment.
I know its not three films, but I would recomend any 3 from this list.
I really can't pick just three movies.

1. Perfect Blue
2. Patlabor 1
3. Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door
I think that's a sufficiently broad sampling of anime.

The movie stands independent of the series, but having seen the series does make it easier to appreciate.
Alternately, I would suggest Wings of Honneamise.

BLECH. The WoH DVD is a piece of crap. Do not recommend that to anyone. (Only recommend it if they can get something other than the R1 DVD.)
Three movie-type shows:
Spirited Away (or pretty much any other Miyazaki film if it isn't available)
Ghost in the Shell
Read or Die (technically, 3 OAVs but it's one disc so I'm counting it)

Lets...see. It kinda depends on what that person likes, since anime is so diverse. I would recommend Vision of Escaflowne since it's compose of lots of genre (love, action, fantasy).

Kiki's Delivery Service, Metropolis and Laputa. Easy on the cultural references, easy on the content.

ok...
Perfect Blue
Cowboy Beebop (seeing it even if you haven't seen the series won't spoil anything)
Princess Mononoke
Its a tough choice to pick just three, but these 3 I can always watch and no I will enjoy them.

I didn't know the Wings of Honneamise DVD was of poor quality. I've only seen the movie on VHS. Well, then I'll suggest Grave of the Fireflies as an alternative to my alternative.
