I don't believe Kirito is a Gary Stu, but I feel there have been instances where things came a little too easily for him. That doesn't make me hold anything against him as a character, but for me it has, on occasion, made for less than enthralling story-telling. Storytelling 101 is to give your hero serious obstacles that are difficult to overcome to increase tension.

My Gary Stu SAO anime fantasy is that nobody ever mentions Gary Stu or Mary Sue again ever.
It will work out about as well as all my other fantasies.

Overrated character is definitely Shiba Tatsuya,the true Gary Stu.
Kirito is nowhere as Gary Stu as Tatsuya. Having said that,Kirito is still overrated character.

He is the Superman of that show. Personally I found it fun to watch how they would have him come out on top.

Yes, he is a freaking god in the anime (and LNs), but I personally haven't seen a lot of viewers praising Tatsuya's character. And wasn't that what this thread was all about? Characters that everyone else seems to like, but you just don't understand their appeal.

That was never what this thread was about, aside from the title. This is basically just another thread to bash/defend whatever series you like/hate using the main character as a vehicle.

Oh,I certainly understand Tatsuya appeal. It's good to see MC that is not whinny. I also found it interesting and like him at first,but later,it getting old and boring. Easily the most overrated character of 2014 so far.

You are saying no one think highly of Tatsuya? Maybe that just the case in Anime News Network. I rarely visit this forum. In fact,my last visit is probably around one year ago.
