So when you say it improves upon reflection, you're not praising it for its subtlety, right? 'Cause I tend to enjoy stories that ask me to do the work in putting everything together.

Pretty much, yes. It's partially subtlety on Baek's part (mostly with Eunyo's evolution as a character), but it's also partly that it gets better because once you have time to process the rocky transitions the whole thing just makes more sense. But Eunyo really looks like she's going to go through some serious growing up, and I think the book handles that well.

As a side note, I've liked everything I've read from Netcomics, no exceptions, so I'm willing to believe that there's more to this series than this volume lets on.

In volume two (which is already out) the story heads in a very different direction. It is a fun ride as far as the four volumes Udon brought out.

I have the Udon volume 1 and 2 from forever ago. Think I found them super cheap at a convention. I remember liking it, though I don't really remember another but spoiler[her cutting all of her hair off and masquerading around as a boy]. It'd be nice to see how it ends finally xD

I don't think I would consider it growing up. Sounds more like Diabolic Lovers were Chiro will be run through the ringer by Nan Lee. "Run through the ringer" is too tame a term. Nan Lee seeks to destroy Chiro, that sounds better.

The finale tombstone for the manga will be when Chiro falls in love with her abuser. That is a guess on my part, but it is a particularly popular trope.

In the first three volumes I read from Udon, spoiler[there is no hint of that]. Of course that is only a quarter of the way through.

Nan Lee does not attempt spoiler[to "destroy" Chiro but to remake her. By the end of volume three that is fairly far advanced.] It is for his own special purposes not to see her grow as a person though.

You have to destroy something, to remake it. To me, Nan Lee sounds more evil, than just a jerk.

Nan Lee is even more selfish than Chiro, which is saying something. He is also completely ruthless and fairly effective which she isn't. So, yeah, evil is a fairly good assessment.
