True Tears is an odd thing… left out of all the Bandai license-rescues from a few years back, it's got to be one of the most modern things in Discotek's otherwise-retro catalog. It also has the distinction of technically being based on a visual novel, while not actually making use of anything from the VN other than its title.

Personally, I've watched a lot of what I categorize as "seinen romantic dramas", and True Tears is really slow and doesn't exactly knock you out with its love story elements. Probably good for completists like me, but to sample the genre, I'd put a half dozen other shows first. Might be most interesting as a look back to an early P.A. Works production.

Except for the titles CR licensed to them, all of which are more contemporary.

That's why I hedged with "one of the most…" Looking at Discotek's catalog page, there's like maybe about 10 really recent titles (Actually I Am…, Kyousogiga, Yowamushi Pedal, 5cm Per Second, Thermae Romae, etc), but not that many compared with the older stuff.

A bit of a correction to the article: STxW doesn't adapt Shining Tears. It bridges the gap between it and Wind, and shows a different side to the events of Wind, but other than one episode of flashback, there's nothing from Tears other than characters.
