Wow, that's dedication! I wonder if the movie would've turned out more... tangible if all of it had been adapted. Though it remains a audiovisual marvel unlike anything anime has produced before which alone makes it worth watching.
It makes sense that this movie was much more expensive than typical anime movies. There are a couple of movies a decade that feel very... un-commercial – In This Corner of the World comes to mind – and this is definitely one of them

Honestly the entire story is...a lot regardless of which medium you consume it in, the manga has some more context though.

All the money expend on this wasn't worth it.
It's a good looking movie, and that's it, the final result if an average and boring old tired story about "growing up" . The cuts to the history and histories left out all the flavor that made the manga interesting.
