Man, I like Kouji Mori. The stuff he writes can be really thought-provoking.
Didn't know he was old friends with Miura. I hope his passing doesn't hit him too hard. |

Kouji Mori is an absolute chad. Look up his wife @akkiu312 on Twitter. He was this close to retiring with Miura at the sea. Life ain´t fair but at least we will get 2 biographies down the line. One will be a novel and Mori´s one-shot is marked as chapter zero. Berserk´s origin is seen on the last page. Shizuya Wazarai is another school friend of Miura. It´s likely why they have a similar drawing style. Mori and Miura at the bottom. Both are teenagers in the 80s pic (Pippin is based on Miura):
This crowd-funded Berserk exhibition that just opened is pretty neat btw. It made it on national TV in Japan and was already visited by Susumu Hirasawa and multiple mangaka. Young Animal Zero will republish King of Wolves. The first of the 3 one-volume-collaborations Miura made with Bronson (FotNS) between 1988 and 90. Its sequel Ourou Den never left Japan but King of Wolves and Japan did. These 3 are the reason why Vol 1 and 2 of Berserk have unpolished art. Miura prioritized the artistic duties for his idol Bronson. Edit: Japan released in 1992. Hups. His final work under someone else. The same year the Golden Age began. Or could there be? Does anyone know? The surgery for correcting aortic dissection before it kills is pretty successful, but once your heart has ruptured from lack of treatment you’re pretty much guaranteed to die within a week. It’s a ticking time bomb.
I can’t help but think that if there were a way to get chronically ill creators treatment then their lives would be longer and contain less suffering. Don’t know about Muira’s case specifically, but it could have been inoperable due to other issues with his health. How many artists are forced to take long hiatuses (occasionally ending in death) over their health? We see it all the time on ANN, “So and so’s agency has announced that they will be taking an indefinite leave to receive treatment for their chronic illness.” It’s tragic as hell. If there exist programs to subsidize housing for young animators, why not ill and/or older mangaka? |
