RIP legend, Drifting Classroom is one of the most influential horror manga I know of, and a lot of some of my favorite indie horror games wouldn't be here without its influence (Corpse Party, for one that further influenced many others).

Did you know that Kazuo Umezu also had a band? Kazz and the Super Police. A real one if there ever was. RIP!

That's sad. Kazuo Umezu was one of the greats in his field. He's been around a long time and it's a shame he's no longer with us. It's a great loss to manga and anime.
RIP and farewell, sir. You will be missed greatly.

Wow, I thought he'd have a few more years. But at least it's not one of those sudden Toriyama/Miura-type deaths. R.I.P.

R.I.P.
i only read The Drifting Classroom earlier this year and watched The Curse of Kazuo Umezz a little while back, both of them are incredible, classic horror pieces that are still very effective and creepy. highly recommend to any horror fans.

RIP Umezz-sensei.
I'm a relative newcomer to his work, but I find it oddly compelling, so much so that I've been picking up every one of Viz's recent hardcovers. My Name is Shingo in particular is outstanding. Hope Viz releases more of his works after they wrap up that series.

I can only imagine how crushed Junji Itou is now. Rest in peace, Kazuo Umezu.

He had a long, good life and brought people joy and horror.
May he spook everyone with his awesome ideas in the afterlife.

Umezu has been one of my favorite mangaka since I first started collecting. I got the single volume of Orochi: Blood back when it first debuted and fell in love with its style. It had a short bio with a little guide to Umezu's other works in the back that became a precious resource of reference in the early '00s. Got the original Cat Eyed Boy set and Drifting Classroom singles as they came out and Reptilia too.
I was so glad his stuff came into print again because it's such a treat. His art has been enormously influential to so many other creators. If I recall correctly, even Rumiko Takahashi was inspired by his shadowing techniques. I think she's talked about that in interviews before and maybe in that My Sweet Sunday short with Mitsuru Adachi. At the very least, she worked as an assistant under him for a while. Pretty sure the dark look of Mermaid Saga and InuYasha's miasma stuff might not even exist without Umezu.
Rest in peace, good sir. You've touched a multitude of generations around the world. Thanks for all the nightmares.
