I'm going into this one very skeptical. For my money, the BO is pretty hit-or-miss in the manga -- their presence only ever seems to tease at meaningful progression of the overall plot, without ever actually delivering anything beyond the most incremental movement. And a movie can't even be allowed the freedom to do that much.

Just on the face of it, a totally original "filler movie" seems more appealing to me than a
BO movie." Still, which such a glowing review, I suppose I ought to be more optimistic.

Aren't we all? I refuse to believe anyone is fully caught-up with all of the chapters and all of the episodes and all of the movies. Nevermind all of the licensed games and spin-offs.

I gave it a shot once but even using one of those “skip the filler lists” I still only managed to get through the first few 300-400 episodes. Eventually it starts feeling like there isn’t any meaningful plot or character progression anymore and I just lost interest. I haven’t a clue where I left off either so it’s hard to pick it up again.

At least the episodic nature of the series means you can typically jump into these movies with few issues.

The first 400 episodes and 5 movies of Detective Conan are much darker than the later episodes. Just look at how the horrified faces of the victims with eyes open compare to the new series where the victims aren’t so creepy looking. They really toned down the violence and shocking imagery which took a lot away from the cool mystery thriller vibe some of the stories had, especially when it came to the Black Organization. Now that the series has introduced new members of the BO and more cops both seem to suck at their job. Only Gin remains a threatening villain. The movies are always a spectacle but each new movie about the BO takes more away than it adds.

I'm not sure I can really agree with that. The series always had a very strong undercurrent of silliness to it -- Gin in the first chapter is pretty much a walking cliche of a Saturday morning cartoon villain, lacking only the long curly mustache to twirl while laughing maniacally.

lol, yeah, I remember attempting the same. I... I didn't not get as far as even 300 episodes, that's for sure. There's just too damn much -- and I think they've also reanimated a bunch of the older (pre-HD) episodes, too, making the whole franchise just that much more blaoted.

Personally, I stick to the manga and the movies -- with the former being something I revisit every couple of years to binge on. For me, I've long since lost interest in the over-arcing plot, such as it is, and am mostly tuning in because I really love the characters (and especially how much more expressive they've gotten as Aoyama's improved his skills over time) and seeing their relationships with each other evolve and grow.

Like every time Sonoko shows up I get the biggest stupid grin on my face.

I'm curious how this would compare to The Darkest Nightmare. Another BO-centric movie.
