It has been a while since I have seen one of these. With that I mean a group of girls with special powers living in the sole remaining city humanity has left and there being a special school. Hundred comes to mind, though I think the dudes also had powers in that one.

I was mostly joking by mentioning Hundred but I honestly think that had a better first episode than Kamitsubaki City. The premise of City is interesting but beyond that it sure is a mess. Presentation wise it regularly feels unpleasant to look at due to the mix of strange camera angles, stiff animation and weird color usage (the ending is so weird that I don't even know what to think). Pacing wise the first few minutes managed to create a strong vibe and then the show switches between happy and tragic with nothing in between several times. We go from happy singing to Erika brutally getting killed to Kafu living with someone else and feeling a-okay.

The Blackout event and it having changed the world is interesting as a premise but I am not sure if that is enough to not drop it.

Episode 0

I always kind of cringe when I see an Episode 0 designation and this show just deepens the mistrust. Off the top of my head, the only Episode 0 I can remember liking was the one for Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction (and if you think I remembered that title properly without looking it up, you are crazy). Anime shows seem to see Episode 0's as a license to be as confusing as possible. In this case, the MC was living with a woman who gets brutally killed and without any kind of explanation at all, now she's living with somebody else who (I don't think) we saw earlier in the episode, whose name we don't know or how this all came about. Weird. Yeah, super not sure about this but I will give it a proper episode to properly assess.

I only checked this anime out on general principle - I'm not a fan of blatantly CGI characters, partly because their awkward movements look like marionettes and take me out of the immersion, and partly because their eyes are windows into their soullessness. Cute girls defeating monsters through the power of song also doesn't sound like my cup of coffee. I say all that to lay my own leanings/biases out on the table, not to insult people who like that sort of thing.

I was surprised to find that this anime wasn't nauseatingly cutesy at all. It's pretty brutal. And I really don't like CGI character movement, but the backgrounds were kind of awesome. The long hallways, the gleaming city, that dark wonderland effect when the school was taken over...it was easy to look at and built a mood.

The fragmentary time skips didn't work for me. Erry was a genuinely sympathetic character because they showed how she and the MC met and built up to their relationship a bit. When the show immediately skipped to another roommate with a fully formed relationship in place right after Erry's death, it felt dismissive.

Laplace the werefish's brooding over some vaguely materialized menace, hinting at deep significance that hasn't been earned emotionally is what made me think of a video game, with their patched together cut scenes. There's always some mysterious character in the background dropping hints and assuring the audience that things aren't just being slapped together because they look cool, it all makes sense and has deep, deep implications. Like the games are trying to tap into the power of myth without actually having a well thought out mythology, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It didn't work for me here. ..

I also wasn't blown away by the music, which would be pretty crucial given the plot.

So, I liked it more than I thought, and I genuinely felt some empathy with the MC. Is that enough? It might be if there was nothing else I liked on that particular day, but that's not the case here, and the season's barely started.

The second episode still has some of the same issues as the previous one but it managed to entertain me a lot more. Part of that was there being less story, the first episode simply tried to do too much at once and the result was a mess that made little sense. This week the concept of a group of witchlings and their familiars clearing distorted areas together came across clearly. There are still plenty of mysteries left and now I am actually curious to find out more.

The show is still nothing great but the first episode was a really bad start and besides some basic information settings wise feels like it could have been skipped.

Episode 6

We finally get some explanation as to what is going on.

Good episode for people who want to see cute girls killed and torn to pieces by monsters with lots of blood. Otherwise, still pretty middling.

Episode 12 - Finale

Music videos with thin connecting material. No real conclusion or proper ending.

The show has stayed true to itself throughout its cour - incoherent and mostly incomprehensible. Not really recommendable other than to existing fans of the V-Tubers that the show's characters are based on.
