City the Animation (TV) Source: Manga (ongoing @ 13 volumes by Keiichi Arawi) Demographic: Seinen Animation Studio: Kyoto Animation Genres: comedy, slice of life Themes: CGDCT (cute girls doing cute things), educational, gag humor, surrealism Plot Summary: Penniless college student Midori Nagumo lives in an ordinary city filled with not-quite-ordinary people. And as this reckless girl runs about, she sets the city in motion. Midori is in a bit of a bind. She is in debt, and her landlady is trying to shake her down for unpaid rent. Her best friend refuses to loan her cash since she’s wised up to her tricks. Maybe some bullying would help. Or a bit of petty theft. Neither is sustainable. Maybe getting a job would settle things... But working means less time for fun adventures in the big city... Air Date & Platform: July 06, 2025 (Sunday) Available on: Amazon Prime Episode Count / Runtime: Pending [EDIT: Fancy opener stuff edited. -TK] |

KyoAni's first non-sequel title in 6 years, woo-hoo! Character designs remind me of Nichijou - My Ordinary Life, which is no surprise given that both shows are adapted from manga created by the same mangaka: Keiichi Arawi. Loved My Ordinary Life and I'm super, super stoked for this.

I wonder what the educational aspect of this will be?

That was a fun first episode. Each of the situations is rather absurd and I like that the city aspect means that people from one gag move over to the next one, it gives the feeling that lots of insanity is taking place at the same time. The gags themselves are hit or miss but the over the top animation and sounds (It felt like an ASMR anime at times) make even the misses amusing.

Episode 1
Hmmm... not sure about this. I may not be on the comedic wavelength, but I'll try some more to see. |

Episode 1
Only real disappointment was no talking cat or robot (missing "peaceful days at the Shinonome household"). Certainly going to have many violations of the Strange Sketch Act. |

I'm with Blood on this one. I'm sure I'll wind up on the blacklists of anime traditionalists who loved whatever Manga or Pre-make has people so excited (or maybe it's a literary pedigree?), but I don't see what all the fuss is about, and I suspect it's because I'm watching it plain without the magic sauce of nostalgia. I thought it was alright. The jokes seem to be going for the smart kind of stupid and sometimes felt a bit flat, but it was painless. I liked the vibe and the energy fine, and the bright funny page colors were pleasant, so I'll give myself time to acclimate.

I watched the first episode and thought it was ok, my conclusion being it was just ticking off time until Izumi met up with the roommates... then I realized that wasn't right so I watched it again. It's not that the two girls are roommates, it's that one of them is Izumi's neighbor.
Then things start clicking and clicking and clicking... This is not just a gag series, this is different. We don't learn what Izumi is doing until later and we don't understand why broccoli if we don't connect it to Izumi. The prize Izumi won from City magazine was exactly two months rent which is why she was wandering the City worry free.... City magazine also said a skirt was a lucky item for a certain star sign... This series is dangerously close to being too smart for its own good. |

Yup, very much a show that is pretty darn random. I do like that there are storylines of sorts and that a lot seems interconnected. For example, this week we had that one mangaka find out that he gets to keep his job while having produced his final issue last week (with lots of issues). Niikura and Nagumo meanwhile are interesting in that they are shown to live together after having been separated in the past. That last bit was one wild sequence given that it was about 500 yen.

Or maybe not connected after all, the third episode had some insane segments. The baker and absentminded girl were particularly unique with flashbacks and just being a nutter. Possibly a bit too out there since I liked the three friends going treasure hunting the most.

Episode 5 was something special and insanely creative. There were different styles of presentation, many things were happening all at once 24 hours style with the end coming together amazingly well and there were a ton of easter eggs. That is besides a lot of solid gags and the ending credits making the whole thing into a complete story.
The previous episodes were hit or miss at times but I would recommend at least watching episode 5. |

Episode 5
Definitely too smart for its own good. I loved it. I think this is the first time I laughed at the way an anecdote was told. "Oh, she has people kidnapped." And if Wako can sneak her way into the tower, she could have found the way out of it. I guess she's less Bugs Bunny, more Screwball Squirrel. Or just plain Wacko I guess. |

The 5th episode got insane, starting from realising that a square at the side was not something an abstract version of the main event, but was continuing on from the previous scene. It just started including more currently happening events, where I would look away as it was just a traveling scene before realising that something had happened or they added another screen at some point. And it all turned into some Where's Wally like event, which felt so weird in as an anime, that it felt like it was trying to recreate the feeling of looking at a page with many different events.

The gags may be hit or miss but the sheer creativity on display every episode is impressive (though last week will be hard to beat). I still like the city aspect too, characters keep appearing near other characters and sometimes that leads to unexpected combinations. Storylines also continue with the search for the locket still not being finished and that one girl finally telling her friend that she is moving. |
