Saw someone mention that this is the equivalent to letting Arin Hanson make a Sonic game, and think that's pretty apt

Very excited about this. Been following Gigguk since I got into anime back in 2018.

Not surprising that it's isekai slop. The irony writes itself.

Gigguk is a cool guy, and he produces some entertaining YouTube content. Then again, I can't help but feel like he got this opportunity because he's famous instead of genuinely being a good storyteller.

I enjoy some of his content, but I have a agree. Just looking at the trailer with a little knowledge of his history, it's obvious he got Kevin Penkin because the two are friends and have collaborated in the past. He's also the self appointed "Isekai trash man", so of course his project is in the genre he closely associates himself with.

Grant seems like a genuinely nice person, but he's clearly using his connections he's gained from working closely with the industry and his affiliation with Kadokawa to make this project happen, rather than any merit he's earned as a storyteller.

Admit it guys, a whole lot of us want to make our own idea into anime. What separates us and Gigguk is connection. And money.

I'm not too familiar with Gigguk but does he hate anime or something? Arin's whole thing was he dislikes Sonic and treats it like a joke which is why the years he was the Sonic brand ambassador were particularly bad because it was when the Sonic franchise leaned very heavily into the self-deprecating humor and marketing which I was never a fan of.

I'll give it a chance when it comes out.

A lot of people are jumping on the guy for his connections (Kevin, Kadokawa, etc) but honestly that's the way its always been. The more people you know, the farther you go. Talent matters too of course, but it's not going to carry you on it's own to the same degree without connections

I think it's premature to make any judgments about his own capabilities. It's also a short anime movie, so while it's definitely the biggest thing he's probably done, it's a very small project compared to a series or even a full theatrical movie. That doesn't seem that far outside the realm of reasonability to me (lol at the person who said it was like letting Arin Hanson make a Sonic game... Not even the same scope)

Hey, the last time they let actual Sonic fans make a game, they made Mania so that honestly might be an endorsement.

I mean shit man, everybody's gotta start somewhere. How do you gain "merit as a storyteller"? Not every anime/movie is adapted from a manga. I'm not saying the guy's the next Miyazaki, but don't be that quick to knock it

(Besides, it can't be him trying to capitalize on "his brand", there's not one set of incestuous siblings trying to bone in sight Laughing)

Yeah. I’m not going to hold it against him that he’s getting something made. Even if it’s crap—and in not predisposed to thinking it will be—he’s got to shoot his shot.

And a short is a good way of dipping your toe. It’s smart.

I like how people are criticizing him for having connections when that's how literally everyone in the entertainment industry gets their start.
