Definitely on my reading list for the near future. Older manga series are just so much more authentic, with more heart. And Takahasi-sama is the Queen of Manga after all. Smile

Fantastic write-up. I really don't have much to add other than that I agree with it whole-heartily. Takahashi is extremely popular but I think she still deserves a lot more acclaim in the western world.

I just read (well, it was a Viz Signature version) couple of chapter of Maison Ikkoku at my local bookstore (I didn't get chance to buy it though), and I have to say, this one is more down to earth compared to her other works like Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura since there's no paranormal, or fantasy stuff. It feels like a soap opera to me, and that's probably why her audiences goes beyond shonen demographic.

Among the anime milking Rumiko Takahashi's "fighting couples" formula, Maison Ikkoku is easily the best among them for the more grounded storytelling and gradual developments going into Yusaku and Kyoko's individual and romantic endeavors. Not flawless by any means as I did get miffed with the apartment tenants that annoy Godai at points and some of the typical rom-com elements coming into play with different suitors seeking interest in our two leads. But for a long-running series, I was largely satisfied with seeing how the relationship between the two developed throughout Maison Ikkoku's 96-episode run.

The manga was great. The anime... well... I thought the episodes were too drawn out and slow. Maybe fitting two chapters into each episode would make the pacing better.

BS.
It's the best work by Rumiko Takahashi, no doubt. And Anzen Chitai kicks ass in one of the anime's openings. But best love story? No, sorry. Just to mention one title, Touch munches it like an afternoon snack.

I was in between jobs when the last box set of the anime was up for preorder, and it immediately became entirely unavailable after release. It's the single most painful hole in my collection. I wish Viz would go and release the series on Blu-Ray already.

Maison Ikkoku is one of my all time favorite series. I was one of those sorry people who got the first 7 MI dvd sets but missed and never found the elusive 8th set. To me the most poignant and emotional event was at the end of the final episode when Godai and Kyoko bring their newborn daughter Haruka back to Maison Ikkoku and tell her "This is where your mommy and daddy first met" and the story comes full circle. I totally agree that it's a fantastic series and highly recommend it to anybody.

Viz doesn't have the anime license anymore and has no reason to because it flopped for them multiple times and it sounds like you know this since you brought up the situation with the final set.

As for who else, probably nobody since according to Justin Sevakis, the show is in licensing hell.

I love how people just ignored the whole “licensing hell” thing to keep their speculation going

You got a link? Or care to elaborate?

Nope. Just, we looked into it and was told it's not available due to rights issues on the Japan side, and I can speculate what those might be, but it's just speculation. Believe me if you like. Or don't.

Wasn't there a recent news article about legislation in Japan to sort this all out? What came of it?

It’s not a magic get-out-of-hell free card. It only resolved a specific instance of a show being in licensing hell because one of the producing companies went out of business or couldn’t be reached. I don’t think that’s the case with Maison Ikkoku because the companies involved were the same as UY. I think there may be music rights issues, but that’s just a guess.

Can’t say I think quite so highly of Maison Ikkoku, but yeah, it’s pretty good. Possibly the best love story out of everything I’ve read published in the prior century, for sure. And probably somewhere in my top ten, were I ever inclined to make a list.

Opinions, man. Like, what even are they?

Anyway, to your first point, I’ll at least say that I think Maison Ikkoku benefits a TON from its relatively snappy pacing. I love all of the Takahashi stuff that I’ve read or watched, but pretty much all of it winds up overstaying its welcome.

Not necessarily because they’re too long, but because the formula never evolves. Like imagine if InuYasha had been able to conclude the Naraku plot, and then move on to something else? And give us multiple arcs? Or if Ranma ever actually gained some agency over their curse, or at least found a way to reframe it?

As for the second, look, man… I’m a huge Adachi fan. Love his work to death. Bring it up at every opportunity. But romance is not the man’s forte. And if it were, Touch would not be his best demonstration of it. Niji Iro Togarashi, Katsu and Cross Game all do so much more to flesh about and expand on the central romantic relationship.

I first tried to read this series when I was 15 and had gotten into Ranma, thinking it was more of the same. It was boring to me, so I left it.

When they did the second release when I was 23, I tried it again and actually got it. By that time, I had been through a couple of relationships and had experienced loss. I was a college graduate. And I got it for the first time and devoured all the volumes. I fell in love with the series.

Re-reading it in my 40s, it hits like a Mack truck. It's such a beautiful story and remains my favorite manga series ever.
