Takehiko Inoue speak on Slam Dunk movie adapted by Taiwanese studio and staring Jay Chou
Taiwanese studio consider the movie as a "tribute" than an actual adaptation. Copy and paste: animenewsnetwork.com/news/2006-07-13/jay-chou's-next-role-is-a-slam-dunk Slam Dunk is pretty huge in Taiwan. I think it's pretty dumb to make a tribute if the original creator hate it. Seem like the Taiwanese studio is just cashing in on the situation especially by using homo-actor like Jay Chou (their number 1 popstar) |

That's strange. I don't see how it would even be possible without them getting sued.

Things become interesting now. I didn't pay much attention to the news because I don't like Jay Chou, and now I just found the director would be Chu Yin-Ping (朱延平), famous for his low class, canned, and recycled jokes in his comedies. Now that the original creator has announced a letter denying giving consent of making such a movie. How wrong can this movie go?
I might look into this incident further. |

Weird, his comment regarding the movie (the link darkhunter provided) in three languages have all disappeared.
According to several sources, the film has entered production phase in Shanghai on March 1st, and eight major Chinese movie theater chains have signed a contract to ensure its release for the next Chinese New Year vacation (February 7th, 2008), as well as Japanese premiere in April (during the Golden Week).
Beats me. I wonder if the retraction of Inoue's comments has anything to do with them. Nevertheless, whether the movie would be a success or not is not the concern of Inoue's fans in Taiwan, for they have expressed their protest against Chu and Chou as early as two years ago. |

Well... bring in the Copyright Police.

Inoue updated his news page, so the old news about the Slam Dunk movie was gone. But what he had said was "He was unaware of a Slam Dunk movie being made in Taiwan and that he did not give his permission for such". Now Taiwanese producer can either get permission to adapt the movie through Slam Dunk's publisher or they can make a "tribute" or "inspired" movie ...but not use any of the name or character.
My friends seem to be looking forward to this movie, so we'll see. |

They could still likely get sued even if they made those changes. Or at least they could if the copyright laws there are anything like those in North America/England, since I know there have been cases like that before (the precedent setting one I believe would be when the Bram Stoker estate surpressed the release of Nosferatu because it was very obviously an altered version of Dracula). |

That was exactly what they said when they first announced the movie project over two years ago. I was a bit surprised that Inoue-sensei has never heard anything about it until last month. According to the released plot summary, the first half of the movie is about spoiler[an orphan who learned Kong Fu in an orphanage but later got kicked out for some reason. While he was wandering on the street a homeless noticed his talent and made him a basketball player (and made himself his agent in the process).] The latter half is spoiler[pretty much like the love triangle in Slam Dunk, involving team captain's pretty younger sister, the handsome idol player (who is also her love interest), and Chou as the wacky protagonist.] |
