Recently, there've been an increase in the number of flamatory posts on the forum. We would like to maintain a healthy, active environment where everyone and anyone can contribute. As such, we need to consider the fact that there are many readers, lurkers, and other people who will read the post.
The Internet is a text-based medium, which means that it is difficult to properly convey emotion, unless you are very careful with your wording. As such, a number of "joke" posts recently have been misinterpreted as being actual insults. ANN does not want to promote antagonism between forum-goers, but this sort of posting must not continue. When writing a reply, if you intend to be sarcastic or silly, please make sure it is excessively clear that it is not to be interpreted in a serious manner. This may be done through emoticons, a disclaimer ("j/k", a.k.a. "just kidding"), or some other means. Posters who regularly instigate this sort of trouble will be dealt with as necessary. ------------------------------------------------------------ Slightly tangental to the above issue is that of essential posting. By "essential" I mean this: When writing a post, consider briefly the potential reaction that others might have when reading your post. Do you ask a question? Do you provide information that other posters may not know? Do you offer a new or different interpretation of the thread than what has come before? If you find that your post does not have anything relevant or meaningful to contribute, it would be better to not post it at all. Even if you spend an hour writing an entry, only to not post it, it is better than spending an hour and posting something that is completely worthless. I'd like to remind people of some of "Teh Rule," one section in particular.
Now then, in addition to the points that Cookie brought up above, I'd like to remind you of some other things that are clear violations of these questions. Attacking new (or old) users because they've started a thread you deem to be stupid is absolutely not allowed. We frown on this behaviour significantly more than we may frown on the possibly stupid post that it is a reaction to. Secondly, please pay attention to the words you use. Certain words that you may use to express disagreement with an idea may be based in hate speech. Please pay attention to what you write as it may offend people for the wrong reasons. None of you are racist, sexist or otherwise bigoted, right? Why sound like you are. There are no examples here because I want you to think before you write instead of just looking at a list of words and saying "oh, okay, ANN doesn't want me to use those words." |
