I just watched Overture to a New War and My Conquest is the Sea of Stars. In the encyclopedia Overture to a New War is listed as the prequel to My Conquest is the Sea of Stars.
spoiler[At the end of Overture to a New War Reinhard sends Yang a letter with his name. Yang Wenli doesn't learn Reinard Von Museal’s name until the end of My Conquest is the Sea of Stars. If Overture is the prequel then Yang should know that Reinhard is the commander of the white ship in My Conquest before the end of the movie. Also Reinhard is called Admiral Von Museal in My Conquest is the Sea of Stars. In the beginning of Overture to a New War two aristocrats are talking about him being promoted to Grand Admiral and taking the name Lohengramm.] I believe that My Conquest is the Sea of Stars is the prequel of Overture to a New War and that Overture to a New War is a retelling of the beginning of Legend of the Galactic Heroes(OAV). |

He's right Conquest of Stars is the prequel to the OVA series, it even came out 10 months before the first episode aired.
Both the movie and the first 2 episodes of the OVA series run in correlation with each other. The movie is a much bigger expansion and introduction into the universe though. It's status should in my opinion be changed from sequel to prequel. section8's post even states this too. |

Ok, I finally changed Overture to a remake of the OAV and Golden Wings to a prequel of the OAV (rather than of Overture). Within the existing options I think "remake" was the best match to describe the fact that Overture is an expanded retelling of the first 2 episodes of the OAV. But usually "remake" implies that the *whole* story is the same, so it's not quite exact/perfect. Maybe "alternate retelling" would have been better? Or... something else?
