Tokyo Mew Mew is in the top ten; I guess the people who like SAT morning show wanted to read the differences from the dub.
By the way is friut baskets that good anyway or is it just on sale? |

I was actually pretty curious as to which of the three powerhouse series would top the sales charts all having new volumes released at the same time.
I am surprised that Fullmetal Alchemist was third though. I thought it would've outperformed Negima!. Although, volume 1 is still selling exceptionally well two months later. |

Yes, Fruits Basket is that good. My husband and I are both in our thirties, university educated, and read all different genres of mangas--to give you some context. We both love this one. It is shojo, but you won't find that romance is the driving force in this one (at all). It's much more about people coming to terms with themselves and their world, with themes like friendship, isolation, and self-doubt. If you like a well-written story which goes from funny to sad in a heartbeat, you should definitely check it out.
By the way... I think the reason the fans all rush out to buy it as soon as the newest edition comes out is because there are some major plot threads, and the mangaka holds her cards pretty close to her chest. It's handled very subtly, so I think a lot of us are dying for as many clues as possible when we can get them! Errrr... *I guess I'll shut up now.* |

Keep in mind that it was only just released. I'm sure it'll top the charts for a few weeks, as the first one is on its way to being the years best selling graphic novel so far. But once again, nothing unexpected. Should be interesting to see if Fullmetal can catch up to FB in overall sales by years end. |

Well, I'm surprised that The Wallflower is doing so well. A lot of people on the AoD forums said that they were giving up that series after reading vol. 3. I personally love The Wallflower (it's quirky in a good way
 ), but I haven't gotten around to buying vol. 4 yet.

I'm thrilled to see Wallflower up there. It's honestly one of the few mangas that consistently has me laughing outloud. I resisted it for a while, thinking it was too weird for me to ever like, but now I love it. Every friend who I've made read it thinks it's hilarious as well. Plus, the publisher is just doing such a great job with it. I love the translation notes.

Not to badmouth any one forum in particular, since this is true of all forums, including this one right here... But you can't take what is said by a single small group (even a forum that is a coupe thousand people strong is a small group in the context of the manga marketplace) as reflective of the entire marketplace. Like minded people tend to congregate. So you could find that the majority the people at one large forum might agree on a particular title, vehemently hating it, or adoring it... and it might turn out that the real majority is the exact opposite. In short, Internet forums are not the whole picture, they are an important part of the picture, but no where near the whole picture. Companies that base their market research on what is said in one forum will eventually get burned (this happenned very recently to one company). So likewise, you shouldn't expect sales figures to reflect what you hear at forumX.com (be it Anime on DVD, Anime News Network, Anipike.com or another...) (On the otherhand, forums are a great place to learn "why?" - If a title isn't performing as expected, marketing reps can learn a lot by going to forums and asking people why they are or aren't buying the product.) PS: I gave up on The Wallflower just like those people at AoD. -t |

That's "Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode" in the top ten, the new & recently released sequal series to the original. More likely, the people buying them are fans of the original manga series. & Fruits Basket is a very good shoujo series. |

Fruits Basket is just rocking the sales. I don't think either Funimation or Tokyopop had any idea how much of a gold mine they'd struck with this title. -t |

Yeah, I know that the AoD forums tend to be especially niche-y and hardcore, but it's the only place where I've seen recent discussions of The Wallflower, so I really can't compare those posters' views with anyone else's. While it's true that internet forums are only part of the picture of the current manga market in the US, they're really one of the few ways that people like me can tell what other manga readers are interested in. Besides the very helpful sales figures provided by IcV2 to clue me in to what's popular, my only other option is to talk to my small group of manga-reading friends at school, who of course represent an even tinier percentage of the US manga-reading population (a lot of them don't really know about The Wallflower, I think). I'll admit though, that the discrepancy b/t the forums on AoD and the recent graphic novels sales data has been a real eye-opener, and I'll try to be more careful now about assuming the popularity (or lack thereof) of certain manga. By the way, which company was recently burned by relying on forums? (Was it CPM, by any chance?) |

Wallflower is such a great manga. I bought it beacause I was looking for a new shojou series and I loved the job DelRey did with Tsubasa and now I'm hooked and everybody I loaned it to loves it.
So, I'm not surprised it's in the top 10 cause it's really good and there's nothing like it out there, or should I say I haven't found nothing like it out there  , but I'm surprised because it hasn't received the kind of publicity that other mangas or series have received...
Maybe more series that don't follow the typical shojou story line will be licensed (we can hope) |

 Well, I never liked the fluffy style anyway. Still though, it's good to see Fullmetal Alchemist is getting its recognition.

You're probobly right. I think alot has to do with the fact that it has a sense of humor that appeals to both genders, something many shojo titles are without.
Also very true. While most of the titles on there are good (Fruits Basket and Fullmetal are some of the best examples of their respective genres) and some of them are mediocre, I'd like to see some new things sell for a change; more specifically Nodame Cantabile, which gets my pick as the best shojo manga being released in English. Plus it appeals almost equally to both genders. It would be nice if Blue would defy all odds and actually crack the top fifty, but considering most comicbook stores don't carry it, that's never going to happen, which sucks since it's definitally the best manga so far this year. |
