The 3DS version has possibly been my most favorite/relaxing game I've played over the last decade. It's odd it's getting another remake so soon, and I have some big concerns since I've been hearing here and there, that they're gonna be cutting some content (it's a MASSIVE game in its natural/complete state).

For all intent and purpose, the 3DS version is insanely competent at what it does, though the reliance on (now-defunct) network connectivity to get all of the quests and story has severely kneecapped it in recent years.

I don't think the character designs are too wildly different than what I was expecting like some folks have been criticising. I'm mainly just worried that SE is sending this the way of Resident Evil 3's Remake so that they can cut corners and save time remaking such a massive game at this level of fidelity.

I think if they don't overdo it, streamlining the scenarios isn't a bad idea, especially if it turns out they only cut a couple scenarios that no one really even remembers and made some optional. Because...yeah, part of the reason the game is so long is because it railroads you through a ton of content that doesn't really connect to anything. The 3DS version did a lot by cutting down on how repetitive it is to go from scenario to scenario, but it's still an extremely long game being rereleased in a time where most people don't have the time for that.

I think, if like I'm guessing, the big change is making some of the less relevant scenarios optional, that'd be a good compromise. You want to experience them, great, if you just want to get on with it, you don't need to. What raises eyebrows though is the mention of cutting some scenarios, but there's so many that it kind of depends on where they actually do that. Hell, it could be something as simple as cutting some of the present day stuff down, because the game has a lot of busywork in the present day that doesn't really need to be there.

I'm guessing they also wanted to deal with some criticisms of the 3DS version too. Like how they didn't change the dungeons enough to accommodate the non-random encounters or the job system getting more awkward than the PS1 version. Sending characters through a bunch of classes and building up crazy potential is a pretty standard element in the series, but the 3DS version of VII locked a lot of the best skills into specific classes...and also carried over the same problem from the PS1 version of too many classes, so the skills were too spread out.

One of my hopes for the remake is that they keep the difficulty while fixing instances of the difficulty feeling unfair. That boss is one of several that was difficult in the original version. However, that one also had an unfair element in that it is after you gain the ability to change classes, but you can't change classes between the area flooding and beating the boss. So in theory you can give your characters poorly chosen classes and then be stuck unable to beat the boss and unable to go back and change classes. I'd like to see things like that fixed in some way, but without really taking away from the overall difficulty.

I really want to see how the class system works out. I felt the 3DS version didn't have that satisfaction of other games' versions like FFT or FFV, mostly owing to how they did leveling. Class systems can often be unbalanced, but that's half the fun of them

It has its flaws, but DQ VII was the first DQ I played and ended up being my favorite. I have mixed feelings about the 3DS version and moreso about this one too. But it just looks too good.
