This was the volume that made me fully confident Takahashi does indeed have a carefully constructed plan for the story with how many puzzle pieces came to fit together. The fall of the Goko clan has followed the Mystery Box style of storytelling since the start but this is the part of the story that starts giving more answers than the amount of new questions it creates alongside them. Without going into spoilers, it has remained like this in the 80+ chapters since and it's always very gratifying to see more and more of the picture be revealed. The scope has increased so much that it would've been extremely easy to forget or retcon details along the way, but there's a clear commitment to bringing everything together and it's the most impressive and, to me, engrossing aspect of this manga.
I also wanted to mention how closely Natsuno's death mirrors Kagura's from Inuyasha. She's killed because she has outlived her usefulness (though under different circumstances), she has accepted she's about to die and runs not because she's desperately trying to survive but only because she wants to see the person most important to her one last time. For Kagura it was Sesshomaru, for Natsuno it was Nanoka. In both cases it's heavily implied she had fallen in love with them. That person ends up making it in time and she dies with a smile on her face while granting them the protection of her element after death, wind for Kagura and earth for Natsuno. I'm sure none of it is a coincidence. |
