I didn't know you were into fighting games, Todd.
It's true that we are seeing a bit of a revival of fighting games being pushed into the market again. The community is looking livelier, too. There are even groups making their own doujin fighters.
I have a lot to say about each of the upcoming fighting game releases, but for now I'll just look at the match videos till I eventually play them.

Also, that Prinny game is going to rock my socks.

This is the game the Simpson's parodied back in the day as BONESTORM. I love MAME.

In other news about beloved old Square games, Secret of Mana will shortly arrive on the Wii's Virtual Console…in Japan.
Awesome.....for Japan.I guess the U.S. still doesn't get it.

Todd wrote:
Square later switched it over to a cartridge game, retaining its enticing quest.
The CD version was pretty far along.I heard a bunch of stuff was cut out of it when they stuffed what they could into that tiny cartridge.Man,I cleared space on my shelf, awaiting the sweet arrival of the SNES CD and Seiken Densetsu 2.I'm still bitter about that.I probably jinxed us all.

Ninja BLADE looks cool.Itagaki quit, compitition moves in. Laughing Gundam Musou was fun.I just wonder what else they could make from Dynasty Warriors,oh...a part two.

Few people need to be told that arcades have fallen.
Never! Arcade for life!

I'm not one of the guys looking forward to SF4.I'm mean,it's cool and all but damn, the art direction could have gone a better direction. The characters look far to bulky. It moves like Dimps other fighters Rumble Fish 1 and 2 for the Atomiswave and chunky like the DBZ Budokai fighters kids seem to be in love with.

Now Blazblue on the other hand,I love the new age sprite work. The new tile blending and sprite zoom look fantastic.Arksys has out done them selves again.

Few arcade fighters are as appealing to the anime sector as the upcoming Tatsunoko vs. CAPCOM, but the semi-official word is that there probably won't be a North American arcade version. Of course, there'll be nothing to stop some crazed fans from breaking a few minor laws and buying the Japanese arcade board for obscene amounts.
I'm saving up for several boards.I'm considering TVC.

I loved Arcana Heart and look forward to part Two.Yakuza 2 is a must buy.

I see you are a PC-FX fan.You obviously have the emulator.(How else did you get those clear screen shots). It's one of my favorite systems from the past.I have played every game commercially released for it.Great system.Anime fans should check it out.I look forward the the next column,Vajura On!

Yay, I too was a big fan of fighters back in the day. My favorite absolutely terrible fighting game was DOOMSDAY WARRIOR! for SNES. It had hardly any characters, and I think a small part of me might have even known it was a P.O.S. but damnit, that game had a dragon-man and vaguely anime-styled characters at the time when I was first falling in love with anime. It was god-awful, and I loved it!

That Prinny game looks gorgeous. I've never played any of the Disgaea/NIS games, but I'm willing to go pretty far out of my way to get a good, shiny 2D platformer. Great review of Bratz Ponyz.. Anime hyper

"Settle" for SMRPG? I own both Secret of Mana and SMRPG for the SNES and SMRPG is by far te superior game. I like Secret of Mana but I really regret going over the $35 range for it (I think it was about $50). SMRPG on the other hand, I spent $50 on it and would honestly have gone higher if I had to. The game is easy, old, and relatively simple but I absolutely love it and much of the gaming community does as well.

Also, that Bloodstorm pic isn't photoshopped? That's pretty terrible. The connection is obvious and intended but it conjures up memories of "Buy me Bonestorm OR GO TO HELL!".

BloodStorm is and always was a terrible game, but in a very special way. Attempting to outdo Mortal Kombat's parent-upsetting violence, BloodStorm let players cut off opponents' body parts, rip them in half, impale them on stalagmites, and bring up occasionally profane taunts after matches. Note the above jab at Mortal Kombat's Goro, which somehow failed to make BloodStorm an overnight sensation.

Time Killers was my guilty pleasure.

Anyone who pre-books the game in Japan will also get a soundtrack CD that Square Enix should really, really offer in America.

Didn't they already put out a CT CD here?

I'm pulling for some truly challenging bonus levels; as much as everyone likes Chrono Trigger, it's a pushover in the gameplay department.

I'd like some real endings, as opposed to those BS Twilight Zone-esque ones.

Its appearance on the Virtual Console is a guarantee that you'll never have to shell out for an overpriced, under-enhanced DS port.

Wait until Seiken Densetsu 3 before saying that. Wink

Street Fighter IV also has one important thing in common with the trend-setting Street Fighter II: any arcade will have only one player who's actually good with Zangief, and that player will completely wreck all of the other players just because they've never before faced a good Zangief.

The first Yakuza deserved a better reception than North America gave it back in 2006. A free-roaming simulation of a Japanese mobster's life and times, it came across as an interesting version of Shenmue, or a Grand Theft Auto with slightly less freedom and slightly more narrative

Actually, Yakuza got a pretty good reception, considering it was more "Japanese" than Shenmue.

Quote:
Purists will also note that the game's entirely in Japanese with subtitles this time around, since Sega can't afford to go hiring Eliza Dushku and Mark Hamill for games that people might not buy in droves.

I think it's more a result of it being a last-gen PS2 release, which means that only the fans who bought the first one are likely to go for this. I imagine that prequel for PS3 will get a dub, though.

Get Excited If: You bought the first Yakuza and complained when no one else did.

Replace "first Yakuza" with "Blood Will Tell", and I'll agree. Mr. Green

Oh, and I remember Battle Heat included in some bonus mag in EGM back when they didn't suck. Did any of the programmers work on Punch Mania?

NIS makes some great games. You would probably get a kick out of NIS's earlier games like Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure and Little Princess: Maru Oukoku no Ningyou Hime 2. I was like WTF when they started singing. They first one has an english dub,the second one was never released here.I look forward to the Prinny title too. I'm a NIS fiend.

Hell yeah settle,SMRPG was nothing more than filler when everyone was (including myself,Zalis) in on the count down for Final Fantasy VII.That game was there merely to pass the time.I'll take Secret of Mana over level caps and mini games.

Sagas, Super DragonBall Z, and the first two Sparking!/Budokai Tenkaichi games are the DragonBall console games I'm missing from last gen. So, I'll definately be picking up Trillogy, even though it's pretty much just for Super DragonBall Z.

I suspect that when this live action movie hits Atari may repackage Budokai, Budokai 2, and Sagas in another pack. And finally end it when the movie comes out on DVD in the fall with a pack including Budokai 3, Budokai Tenkaichi 3/Sparking METEOR!, and Infinite World. It's an easy way to make cheap cash for Atari I guess, and at the moment, they could use that.

So how's the swearing in Yakuza 2? That was the big thing that turned me off on the first one: they'd use the F-bomb every 3 words which was bad enough, but what made it even worse was that the translators obviously had no idea how to use English cursing correctly. It ended up sounding both offensive and incredibly stupid.

Gotta hand it to 'Nippon Ichi' they always come up with some weird and exciting games. That is if you like grinding your characters all the way to 999,999 and so on.

As for 'Square-Enix'. I'm not really happy with the way they've been going. I mean all they do is 'FF' games. Which is pretty much their bread and butter now. Oh and let's not forget 'KH'. 'Sakaguchi' is gone now because even he can only take so much. I'm a fan of the older series. Or should I say "pre-Nomura" though I am enjoying the FFIV remake. But it's all they've concentrated on and pretty much left all their other flagship titles in the "used" barrel never to be hear much from again. Releasing 'CT' was a good thing for new gamers, but now they might be releasing 'Mana'? Hell, that might be the best thing considering how much of a disappointment the last 'Mana' games were. Considering how much folks loved 'SOM', maybe they'll release the others. But that would mean changing the title back to what it was originally causing even more confusion. Since the first 'Mana' game was on the gameboy as 'FF Adventure', 2 came over as 'SOM' and '3' was advertised as 2 but never made it over and we ended up with 'Evermore' instead. As a somewhat enjoyable "copycat". So many titles that have never seen the light of day.

'Romancing Saga', 'Mana', 'Parasite Eve', 'Bahamut Lagoon', 'Brave Fencer Musashi', 'FFT', etc...

And when they do decide to revisit they screw them up. Because after all the bigger titles are the ones they want to [milk] push because gamers are too dense to realize they're not really trying. And when they do try no one likes it "go back to what we didn't want because the one that created it made it look cool. Because we're so darn used to it and wish it was different". Which is one reason why many of the creative staff are gone. And now they're messing around with 'DQ9's release. What happened? And it's not just 'Square-Enix', it's other companies too. Where staff who have worked on projects that made the company money just kept running with the same thing every year. So they leave and form their own companies so they can have freedom and control over their properties.

Not trying to knock them, but it really upsets me when I see a company run itself into the ground with the same things over and over. I still love 'Square-Enix' but I wouldn't mind seeing something new by them. Even if I never play it. But most of all I would like to see some of their older titles get remakes/upgrades for the hand held. They seem pretty good at that already. Rolling Eyes

That 'Fist of the North Star' game looks interesting.
I'm going to have to check out that game 'Bloodstorm'.

One thing I would like to add, is that the 'SFIV' game is looking good. At first I really hated how this game looked. But after seeing it more in action on game sites I saw that 'Capcom' for once did their homework. It has it's moments as a 3D game, but it handles like a 2D. At least it looks 10x better than 'SF: EX'. I'm not into fight games but I always enjoyed all the 'SF' incarnations that graced the arcade scene.

Hey now, don't be dissing the DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi games. Some of us enjoy fighters where you don't have to memorize sixty button presses to pull off your special moves. Smile

I always thought it was a fun game to play and good as well. Not as excellent as the MK series but still great.

I should have said old Budokai fighters.I'm not dissing the one button combo found in almost all of the DBZ games.I think they are just peachy.I have a problem with the character designs in SF4 looking too blocky and were comparing them to earlier DBZ titles.I know,I've seen them evolve because I'm one of the many who was tricked into buying the same title over and over with minor changes (Madden,Tiger Woods,Dynasty Warriors, the list goes on) Budokai Tenkaichi was when the series was getting better,Budokai was a step above Z,but still sucked.I'm just saying,I don't like seeing characters resemble Unreal tournament body types.
