I was always under the impression that Erin liked Hetalia. I think it was just because she wrote that article in Otaku USA about how popular it was so I just assumed.

I'm still on the border about X though. If it's even remotely similar to the movie, I know I won't like it.

Hetaila got the rating it got because among things the allies sent Italy back to Germany in a box with the F bomb written on it. Funi had noted it in one of their upstream con panels because some had asked the same question about the rating.

Also as an Italian American I can say I'd rather have Italy be a pasta loving idiot than a mafia thug.

Isn't Hetalia just Strike Witches for girls?

Well, no, if only because Hetalia doesn't have the unfortunate implications of sexualizing underage characters. But it does contain a lot of other kinds of fanservice, which may have been what you were going for there.

I adore Hetalia, but the five-minute format of the anime definitely has its flaws. I'd have preferred it if the shorts were arranged in twenty-minute chunks on the DVD, a la Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star...

Can someone please clarify - isn't the problem with X that it is an ongoing story so all of the various anime adaptations have Gecko Endings?

I don't find Hetalia that funny. Racist jokes can be funny, but Hetalia doesn't do a very good job at all. FUNimation did an amazing job in actually adding humor to the series.

But anyway, Hetalia is one of those series where it's terrible unless you're into heavily implied gay subtext. Rolling Eyes Comedy doesn't matter much in the long run.

What series other than this has dozens and dozens of hot guys with questionable sexualities? As implied by the Wikipedia article, the possibility for pairings is endless. Hetalia is a fangirl's wet dream in motion.

Now, if you excuse me, I have to go into hiding before an enraged fangirl gets out a chainsaw.

I believe the word you are looking for is twits.

Yup, and CLAMP are sure taking their sweet time finishing it too.

Hetalia: Seriously, I don't know what the big buzz is about this anime. At AX, girls practically screamed for Konishi to voice his character. The South Korea ban caught my interest though. How exactly are they portrayed in Hetalia?

X: To be honest, I saw the OVA years upon years ago and just couldn't get into it. Honestly, it was a struggle to watch it to the end. I'm referring to the old dub of course but even if a new dub sounds better, it can't salvage a plot that's difficult to sit through. The violence was also quite off-putting at times too.

House of Five Leaves: Funny, I think the art style confused me with an older anime that was done in the same way. Which one was that again?

That might be the case, but it's not like they had much of a choice, with X being virtually discontinued.

I agree that the first half of X was better than the second. The first half set up quite a bit, but the second half didn't have the same level of plot development, nor did it deliver what I'd expected from seeing the first half. There was some decent character development, but I didn't like the way they set it up, with the whole character-of-the-week concept.

Pretty much nailed Ho5L, including the warning to watch it an episode at a time. I streamed it on Hulu pretty much as it aired ... but when I was in a mood for it, and never two or three at a sitting.

And if I loved how Giant Killing this week conveyed the pre-match excitement before a big game ... sometimes letting the adrenal gland have a rest is a fine thing.

Korea isn't in the anime at all, but in the manga, his big shtick is taking credit for other Asian nations' inventions.

I've always looked at Hetalia like that, they're both series about moe-anthopomorphisms which pander massively to otaku/fujoshi. Respectively having tons of yuri/yaoi bait.

It was only Azumanga that did that, it also aired the omnibus versions , Lucky Star was broadcast as 25min eps. Watching shorts on DVDs is annoying I agree; too freequent with the credits.

I agree. Episode-length arrangements would definitely help.

I like Hetalia fans more than the show itself. I'll read the manga when it comes out from Tokyopop, maybe that will change my mind.

I guess it depends in what way it might be similar (like if you hate feathers, you'll hate X, which looks like chicken exploded half the time) but I really heavily recommend those first two DVDs.

along with more inevitable arguing about Hetalia!

The first four episodes are available dubbed on Funimation's website. The dub helps the funny level; I laughed a lot more often at the dubbed episodes,

And thus, the floodgates of hell have opened.

Are you talking about Ristorante Paradiso? That came out a few years ago and was set in modern day Italy, but it's the same manga-ka.

Side note: I love both Ristorante Paradiso and House of Five Leaves for their mature character stories. I wish more anime was like that.

Alright, so I'll break the combo and move away from this current Hetalia shitstorm: =.= Haven't we already once seen this shelf collection?

This is like the second repeat...
