Did PmChivas abandon Aquarion to check out the similarities or because Aquarion was the worst mecha series of the decade? Aquarion was a mixture of the worst parts of various anime, ridiculous backstory, incest, and two leads so obnoxious you think they where a parody of a Rumiko Takahashi manga.
Most of the anime I own dates back to the 90's simply because their cheaper, and there is very few recent anime I actually want. Also a couple of anime are license rescued because the original company just didn't renew the contract. Love Hina for example, but yeah I wish some rare series like the Excel Saga manga, or SRW anime where re-licensed. |

Interesting question this week.....
The number one forum argument I'm tired of listening too? American Animation VS Anime GAAAAAAGGGGGHHHH...... This stupid argument keeps re-surfacing over and OVER again! People never do comparisons to animation from SPAIN or FRANCE or ENGLAND. NOPE! It's always American Animation VS Anime. Both are good, but in their own ways. My View On This Idiotic Subject (keep in mind there are always exceptions) ANIME The argument for: DETAIL- The Japanese normally put much more lines, shadows and detail into their illustrations when animating. Normally with television series, American animators don't even bother to put in cast shadows, let alone every single button and seam on a piece of clothing. Of course, when it comes to feature length films, the shadows are added to American animation. STORY- The Japanese have some of the most original story plots I've seen in a LOOOONG time. A boy can see germs? Sure! A girl somehow gets attached to a boy's hand? OK! A disease that can turn people into dogs? Why not? While American animated films (normally) stick to the fifteen minute episode formula, anime is more like a soap, where the story continues every week. The argument against: ANIMATION- No matter how you put it, the animation in (most) anime really (and I mean REALLY) sucks. Badly. This is because most TV anime is animated with only 8 frames per second (American television is normally animated with 14 frames per second). Even the best anime films (MOST animated 16 FPS, Ghibli and other more professional Japanese films (18-20 FPS) look choppy when compared to American animated ones (24 FPS). Not only that, but the mouth sync in anime normally isn't as accurate, and in addition, American animators have seemed to grasp the concept of "squash and stretch" much better. SEXISM- (I just know I'm going to get flamed for this, but.....) I find the way more then 90% of woman in anime are depicted slightly offensive. Normally ditsy, and littered with huge boobs and panty shots, I find the whole thing rather creepy...... 3D/ 2D MIXES- Have you ever seen an anime where computer animation is attempted to be mixed with the 2D? Because anime is normally so choppy in comparison to the 3D stuff, it......just......looks.....awful!!! : P (the only exception I can think of is EVA 1.0, and the planes from Porco Rosso) AMERICAN ANIMATION The argument for: ANIMATION- American animation normally flows quite beautifully, (unlike anime, which is normally very choppy) Animators here use a very different mathematical formula for their pieces, to make their cartoons move much smoother. SLAPSTICK- While anime creators have been using more slapstick recently, the American animators take the gold on this one. Watch any WB or Scrat cartoon and tell me you're not in hysterics by the end!! SWEET, SIMPLE, AND TO THE POINT- Yeah, yeah. The stories in American animated cartoons aren't nearly as complex as anime, but sometimes that can be a good thing! (especially when you have an anime battle that constantly spans for over 10 episodes) The argument against: LACK OF DETAIL- (See comments above) STUPIDITY- More recently, animators have been relying WAAAAAY to heavily on things like butt jokes, poop jokes, fart jokes, and characters that say random crap like: "I LIKE MUSTARD!!" The worst part about all this? These are the jokes and characters that people (and kids) just LOOOOOOOOOOVE to mimic. >.< BLAGH!!! I can't stand it!! THE GOOD OL' DAYS?- Lack of creative pose, lack of 2D animation, and just LACK in general have made the American animation market not nearly as fun as it used to be. In the late 80's and 90's the artists were more in control of the animation studios. Now most studios are run by CEO businessmen types. THE FINAL VERDICT? BOTH are good and bad in their own ways. Tis a tie, and there she shall stay in my book! LOL! 
Truthfully, I love animation from all over the place...not just Japan or America. While I adore anime, and absolutely love American stuff too, finding hidden gems can be fun! Case in point- The Illusionist...the new animated French film being directed by Sylvain Chomet. I'm (finally) getting to see it on Saturday...and couldn't be more excited! ...or how about The Secret of Kells? Yobi the Five Tailed Fox? Nocturna? Wallace and Gromit? The Triplets of Belleville? Persepolis? The Cat Came Back? The Man Who Planted Trees? KERITY la maison? Allegro Non Troppo? The Big Snit? ....seriously. there are so many awesome animated films and shorts out there (not made in either America nor Japan) just waiting to be discovered!

Paranoia Agent is still under license and is still in print here in Australia from Madman at just under $50 plus postage. Link. I'm sure it would only take a couple of weeks to get from our sunny shores to your snowbound wasteland. It's region 4 of course but there's always a workaround. Good to see the boot is on the other foot for once.

Am I the only one who almost never re-watches things? About the only time I would ever re-watch a show is when I'm showing it to other people. And even then we usually just watch the first episode and then I lend them the series if they like it or whatever. Off the top of my head the only things I have re-watched over the past five years or so are some episodes of Welcome to the NHK, Here is Greenwood and some clips of Shiki.

Since I am not going to quote the whole arguement I just have to say that I agree on your points especially the two complaints above. You would think that the Japanese would improve n their animation of 3D but even their movies have a ton of crappy 3D animation intergrated into the 2D. The most obvious example is FMA: Conquerors of Shamballa where the entire movie is well animated except for the CG armors which look like complete ass. Over at PenguinTruth's blog I stated that the original Zoid series had better animation 3D animation. Out of all of Fox's animation the only ones I can watch anymore (that still air on TV) is American Dad, because at least the character's are only stupid and not retarded. Having a stupid character isn't bad but too many times the entire cast is nothing but stupid jerks. |

Loved Elliot's answer - since mine would have been nearly identical. Shikibane Hime (Corpse Princess) and Noein in your re-watch lists is ok by me, couple of my favs along with Azumanga Daioh.

Naruto and One Piece were bumped up to $9.99 some time ago. I can't say about their other titles. $2 is a big price increase. So Answerman gives out the wrong answers.

Yup, Answerman was dead wrong on that one. I'm staring at a few Shonen Jump titles (One Piece, Hikaru no Go, Bleach) and they're all MSRP of $9.99. I think every Viz release is $9.99 with the exception obviously of the omnibus collections like Cross Game. But $2 isn't that big of a price increase to me, and they're still better priced than Tokyopop (typically $10.99 per) and Yen Press ($11.99 per), although in the case of Yen Press, I think they put out a better quality product so I don't mind the extra cost. |

Oh no. That's not my rewatch list. I realize after reading my response...it was a bit confusing. That's my 'To be watched' list. A couple of dozen pages of anime in my binder than just begs to be watched, but get's put off for other things. I've seen...at least a disc of most of those shows. Except Geneshaft. I started watching...then just kinda was like " Oh...something else to do!" and haven't gone back.
Burst Angel...I haven't been able to get through the first disc. I'm sure it gets better...but I just feel so bad for how poorly those girls treat that poor guy... I could list my ACTUAL rewatch list...but it mostly contains Azumanga, and Dai-Guard (cause it's such an unsung hero of amazingness!!). I could probably watch those shows indefinitely. Oh...and I am that Elliot. |

Not to condone it, but I don't think one can blame price increases on piracy. Just about everything has gone up in price over the past few years. Gas prices have a far greater effect, especially when you're dealing with something that has to be shipped. Something that has a high demand and sells well could just as easily go up in price. And then there's those who download but go out and buy as well, so it would be necessary to compare sales with and without piracy to really tell how much of an effect it really has.
iTunes raised it prices knowing it could get that much rather than to deal with losses. After all, a pirated song really doesn't hurt iTunes, it hurts the artists and companies that own the rights. iTunes is equally affected when someone purchases their music from another source. |

This concept of "a rewatch list" confuses and infuriates me! But seriously, when it comes to rewatching, I just grab whatever I'm feeling like and watch it. There's no organization too it. Anything and everything in my collection is open for rewatching, although I normally just watch a random episode or two at a time. But I'd have to say the two shows I consistently rewatch more than anything else are Slayers and Lovely Complex. And I have some traditions -- I always watch Hellsing or Requiem from the Darkness on Halloween, every Christmas I watch the episode of Majokko Tsukune-chan where they kill Santa Claus, etc. But I don't organize my rewatching. Where's the fun in that?
The incessant argument I am tired of having is the constant Jacobite attacks on the legitimacy of the Hanover Succession. Oh, and the constant arguments with "Type B" moeblob fans who insist that a show's quality is directly proportional to the number of girls they get a chubby over. I don't care if the lead protagonist is your waifu, when a show is lacking direction, devoid of plot, illogical in concept and denuded of development, then the show sucks. This isn't negotiable, its a law of fscking prose! If it's your favorite show, or if you draw bad doujinshi of it, or if you sleep with a dakimakura of the main character at night, that's fine with me. I don't care. But stop claiming your show is superior when it is obviously not. |

No, he's very much right. It's the both of you who are mistaken. Where did he ever say that all Viz titles were $7.99? (or so the subject line is trying to tell me) I'm about 99% sure that the only Viz manga that are still $7.99 are the VIZKIDS line. Viz has two distinct lines of manga when it comes to Shonen Jump: Shonen Jump and Shonen Jump Advanced. Since the beginning, the regular Shonen Jump titles were $7.99. Shonen Jump Advanced has always been $9.99. Back in October/November 2009, Viz stealthily upped the price on regular Shonen Jump releases to match that of the SJA titles - $9.99. Don't believe me? Go to some website like Borders.com and get the Naruto manga listed by publication date, newest first. See that price jump between volumes 45 and 46? It's the same with Shaman King, except that happened in November. Shoujo Beat titles, following a similar trend, cost $9 regardless of whether they were in the mangazine or not. Again, around the same time, their price increased to $10 as well. Need I show my age in saying that Viz back in the old days used to cost you about $15 per volume? No, not omnibus. If you wanted that FLIPPED volume of Ranma 1/2, you had to fork over about $15, sometimes more if the volume was huge. Even today, the SigIkki will cost you $13. Given that sometimes the paper is slightly nicer, it's still more than a little frustrating to pay the higher price, but that's what coupons are for. Really, two dollars just means you have two less candy bars to eat. Please, Brian has said that he works in a bookstore, as do I; we know what we're talking about. |
