In my opinion Hajime was always directly battling Katze through proxy, in the same brilliant way Carl applauded Katze for, except since the whole message Crowds pushed was that everyone is a hero Hajime did not have to be as overt and work as hard as Katze. I believe this is apparent in their final conversation during the battle when Hajime sheds the suite and just walks along having a conversation with Katze in their own version of a final battle. Their methods were the same, just with different goals. Katze mobilized the darkness of humanity and Hajime mobilized the good in it. As for Katze being invisible to Hajime I think it must be because Katze is representing the darkness, the part of people who want to see others suffer, and Hajime just does not have a single part of her exuberant self that thinks like that, not even for a moment. Or perhaps it goes back to the comment about trolls and she is choosing to not see him? Take your pick.

The ending? I would have liked something a little clearer but I can forgive it since this is a show I accidentally started watching mistaking it for something else and I am glad I did this was my top show of the season if not the year.

The reviewer was quite right, including the strangling part too. Because you do want to strangle the producers who thought it was a great idea to not include the final battle.

It is a great show, and that is probably why the frustration level about the incomplete ending is so great. Here's hoping an OVA or a second season will include the final battle.

I assumed that spoiler[OT died after his encounter with Katze, it was odd that no one mentioned him at all later on in the episode. Dang that ending was rushed]

I disagree with this point. The whole series is a big commentary on social media. Berg Katze is basically the ultimate troll, and the best way to deal with a troll is to ignore him. To have a big battle with him would have ruined the entire point of the series.

Katze was much more than a troll. He hijacked the system and caused widespread destruction, so he couldn't be ignored. I didn't mind the ending so much. It's actually refreshing to see a series close with some uncertainty, and not wrapped up in some neat little package. I would have liked to see more from the rest of the team, if they ever do another season I'd definitely watch.

No actually that part of ending is contradictory to the entire message of the show, which was that we should try our hardest to understand our enemies and through communication achieve peace.Thing is people like Berg Katze(who create chaos only because) dont exist in reality,so I am really puzzled as to why the creators suddenly had to drop in this "dont feed the troll" bullshit at the end.

Which leaves him precious little time to tie up the show's many loose ends. We are never told why Hajime can't see Katze (or why it matters). We never learn OD's fate. And most unforgivably, we never see Hajime face Katze. (We see the result, but not how the f*** it came about). Which kind of makes you want to strangle someone. But we won't. As humans, we're better than that.

Just 5 more minutes doing a better job of tying things up at the end would have been greatly appreciated. Too many questions that are simply glossed over. In any case, Gatchaman Crowds is certainly a thought provoking social commentary, I just wish it wrapped things up better within its own narrow context.

I'll save the rant (and spare the long discussion) about how Crowds is analogous to possessing a potentially lethal power in public, how everyone seems to have one, and that all of them are (somewhat) overseen by a mysterious overlord that ultimately makes the decision whether you can possess this power or not. It's actually an interesting discussion with many real world parallels, but it can be a rather tedious argument.

But there was a battle, and Berg Katze isn't exactly a pushover either as shown earlier.

I need to go back and watch a few key points, but I figured the end went as it did to leave it ambiguous as to whether Berg Katze is even "real". Only certain people see him and when he acts he always acts through/as other people. (aside from the fight with OD, which... I have questions about but need to rewatch) Basically, it isn't as clear/clean as "Sixth Sense" (and I think that's somewhat intentional) but I think an argument could definitely be made that Berg is not actually a "person"/being but instead the darker aspect of people in the show.

I need to take note of JJ's messages too, because I'm pretty certain at least a few of those are not interpreted correctly by the characters in the show when all is said and done.

I didn't really care for the ending all that much. It gave me a huge sense of whiplash. But with that said, it was a very interesting show, and one that really grew on me as I continued to watch it. So, I too, hope for a second season or an OVA of some sort. The series deserves it!

Gatchaman crowds is quite the queerest thing I've seen in some time.

[Sure, you start with Rui, OD, and Katze, which is fine. But Joe is pretty queer too, and have another look at hajime's dress sense and speech patterns, and then see how utsusu reacts to hajime and sugune does to Joe... and the absence of any heterosexual romance/shipping implications even when they'd be traditional... No way it's not deliberate.]

Terrible show. The means are too simplistic and childish for the pretentious ends it had.

No kidding! I was surprised at the amount of characters that were gender queer to some extent. Of course, you could argue that Katze is an alien, but where's the fun in that!

Good review. I also was frustrated with the lack of resolution, particularly Hajime vs. Katze. But what I, in particular, liked was how the show drove its idealistic message without being preachy or naive.
