Hi I'm fairly new to the world of gundam as only seeing wing so far and having seed come to canada next month. I was wondering if someone could tell me the order to watch the gundam series in. As I don't know what the first one to be created or the best one made is yet. As I have only seen Wing which I think is great and a little of seed.

I can't really give you an order to watch them but i reccomend you watch g gundam. I like it because it strays away from the normal gundam style. You know in space battles one Gundam versus 100 mobile suits. In g gundam its an arranged battle between two gundams from different neo countries. The neo countries are the big country made in outerspace because earth has become extremely dangerous. Sorry I got to much into the info of the stories.

Not every Gundam series is directly connected. As it stands, there are six different Gundam timelines virtually independent of each other, with each series/film/OVA falling in line with one of these timelines.

It plays out like this; under each timeline are the titles connected to it, listed in the order in which they occur:

Universal Century timeline
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: The War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack
Mobile Suit Gundam F91
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam

Future Century timeline
Mobile Fighter G Gundam

After Colony timeline
New MS Report Gundam Wing
New MS Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz

After War timeline
After War Gundam X

Correct Century timeline
Turn-A Gundam

Cosmic Era timeline
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny

Hope that helped!

Please give reasons for your recommendation(s) or your post will be deleted. Thanks!

As for order, I agree with Nagi. There's a certain timeline that the Gundam incarnations fall under, but there really isn'ta reason to watch them in that order. You can just as easily start out by watching Gundam X or Gundam Wing as Gundam 0079, because while there are references in some shows to other Gundam series, they're largely stand alone properties.

There has been a lot of Gundam talk lately. Hopefully someday I can see what all of the fuss is about. I've only caught some Gundam here and there.

Oh, if you want to see the original Mobile Suit Gundam, there is also a movie trilogy that's kind of an overview of the whole series. However, I haven't seen the actual TV show, so I'm not sure how inaccurate it (the movie trilogy) may be.

Also, note that the movie trilogy is Japanese audio only, in case you're expecting a dub, while the actual series is dub only. Yeah weird, I know, but I thought I'd tell you a little something anyway. Wink

The series is 10 volumes long on DVD, and both the series and movie trilogy can be found at Deep Discount DVD.

SakechanBD you are right on the part of the alternate universes (G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Gundam X, Turn A, and Seed) but when it comes to the Universal Century if a person is willing to learn correctly then they should start from Mobile Suit Gundam and on to the rest. My reason for saying this is because if you start from the beginning and then go onto the next series it will save you alot of confusion.

As far as I know, it's the movie trilogy which is considered as 'canon' for the rest of the Universal Century time-line, therefore it may be recommended to give a priority to this version instead of the TV serie (all the more as this one is dubbed and one episode is missing... Razz ): the movie trilogy presents Gundam how Tomino really wanted to make it and explores more deeply the Newtype concept which is, IMHO, the main pivot point of the whole UC time-line, especially when you see how it is developped into the sequels

The movie is pretty much 0079 shoved into a trilogy. IMO, it's a little hard to get through, as they skip a lot of parts and try to make up episodes worth of dialogue with a few narrations. If you want the *full* 0079 experience, it's much better to watch the series. The downside is that it was only released in the US dubbed...

The Gundam movie trilogy isn't an "overview" of the series. It practically is still MSG. Same story, same series, but with some changes. Better yet, storyline wise in the Universal Century world, it's the MSG that the sequels follow. Here is some evedince.

For a non-significant spoiler: spoiler[When they first re-introduce Hayato in Z Gundam, he has his Guncannon with his number on it (I think 107, 108, or 109, I forgot). He piloted that in the 3rd movie while throughout the series, he always piloted the Guntank.]

And for a major spoiler in Char's Counterattack: spoiler[When Char re-calls when Amuro killed Lalah, Char remembers how he almost killed Salya. In the flashback in this movie, Sayla is piloting the core booster which she piloted in the movies, in the series she pilots the G-Fighter]

Even though the animation is out-dated (orignial series made back in 1979 and movies were done in 1982), it's still a good watch. There are closed minded people out there who will tell you the animation is bad just because it was made 20 years ago. Hell, I find the designs of it way better than Hirai "I can't draw more than one face" Hisashi.

My personal favorite Gundam series of all time is Z Gundam, sequel to First Gundam. I thought it had the best battles, mech designs, character cast, and story. Even though this was made in the mid-1980s, I think the animation and designs were really impressive.

You certainly picked some great series to watch but let me just make sure you have the order correct.

If you really want the best that the Universal Century has to offer, I guess you could watch it this way. But I could be wrong, I haven't seen or heard much about anything after Char's Counterattack. I guess you'll just have to find out for yourself. Cool

Mobile Suit Gundam TV Series
Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy (reccomended)
Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team (reccomended) (*optional*)
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (reccomended)
Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack (reccomended)
Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (haven't seen)
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (haven't seen)

As for the Alternate Gundam Universes it doesn't matter what order you watch them in *except for maybe Seed and Seed Destiny* Here's the series I reccomend.

Gundam Wing (reccomended)
G Gundam (highly reccomended)
Turn A (haven't seen) *I've heard it's really good though*
Gundam Seed
Gundam Seed Destiny

As for G Gundam, it's a great way to get into Gundam since G Gundam is about as simplistic a Gundam you can get. Most of the UC is fairly complicated so G Gundam is great for most people with a short attention span. Laughing

Just know G Gundam is much MUCH diffrent then the rest of Gundam so if your looking for a more "DBZ-esque" Gundam, the closest you could really get to that is Gundam Wing.

Your plans for Gundam sound good though. Just know that G Gundam doesn't at all fit into the main storyline in MSG, ZETA, and CCA. But it's all great anime when it comes down to it. So sit back, watch, and enjoy.

Well, I not anywhere close as knowledgeable with Gundam as some people I know but I usually have a good feeling about if a series is bad or good.

So I'm going to go out on a limb here and speak my mind.

Best of the Universal Century-

Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy
Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team *optional viewing but good one still*
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack

Best of Alternate Universes-

G Gundam
Gundam Wing *I've only seen a little bit of it*
Turn A *I haven't seen it but I've heard it's excellent.*

Worst Gundam series thusfar-

Gundam Seed. *I dont like it because it takes from the Universal Century and Wing but rather then making a great series like Gundam Wing did, It turns it into a real bad plot and boring characters who all look the same.*

That's about it. Everything else I haven't seen or heard enough to form a valid opinion on.

If your on a budget like me then try to buy Gundam this way.

Gundam Movie Trilogy
Zeta Gundam *only available bootlegged currently* Crying or Very sad
Char's Counterattack

and if you want something diffrent try:

G Gundam box sets *They're a great value*

Gundam Wing *If you can afford it*

But will be released by Bandaï in a few months, check the news:
Quote:
Bandai has solicited the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Limited Edition Box Set for 2004-11-23 for $199.98. The set, which includes the entire 50-episodes, should have a running time of approximately 1250 minutes plus extras.
