Group C-6
The Seleçao, Eden of the East
vs.
Shirou Emiya vs. Archer, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks

My vote goes to: The Seleçao.

Group C-7
Kaname Kuran vs. Zero Kiryū, Vampire Knight franchise
vs.
The Organization vs. Yoma/Awakened Beings, Claymore

My vote goes to: The Organization vs. Yoma/Awakened Beings.

Group C-8
Sousuke Sagara vs. Gauron, Full Metal Panic! franchise
vs.
Shiki Ryougi vs. Souren, Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners

This is more than a rivalry here between these two battle-hardened men of war. To one, a personal vendetta and the other, a twisted game of cat and mouse. What makes this more interesting is how Gauron has the psychological advantage against Sousuke. He just wants to toughen up Sousuke in his own sick way.

My vote goes to: Sousuke Sagara vs. Gauron.

Group C-9
Maya Kitejima vs. Ayumi Himekawa, Glass Mask
vs.
Strike Witches vs. Neuroi, Strike Witches

My vote goes to: Maya Kitejima vs. Ayumi Himekawa.

Group C-10

My vote goes to: Arsene Lupin III vs. Inspector Zenigata.

Group C-14
Outlaw Star Crew vs. MacDougal Brothers, Outlaw Star
vs.
Nereids vs. Criminal Siblings, Daphne in the Brilliant Blue

My vote goes to: Outlaw Star Crew vs. MacDougal Brothers.

Group C-15
Ranma Saotome vs. Ryoga Hibiki, Ranma ½
vs.
Madlax vs. Limelda Jorg, Madlax

My vote goes to: Ranma Saotome vs. Ryoga Hibiki.

Group C-16
Mugen vs. Jin, Samurai Champloo
vs.
Kirino Kosaka vs. Ruri “Kuroneko” Gokou, OreImo

Samurai Champloo has a lot of symbolism in it and they are very subtle. One of its most prominent recurring symbol is the concept of yin and yang. Mugen and Jin could not be any more different from each other. One is cool, calm, and collected while the other is feral, temperamental, and uncouth. Their differences led to a fierce rivalry which spans throughout the entire series.

My vote goes to: Mugen vs. Jin.

Going to be a bit uncharacteristic and rattle off some last minute votes without my usual level of detail. My work is really picking up again. I knew consulting would have its moments, but didn't expect 70 hour weeks. Group C-1
Princess Tutu vs. Princess Krahe, Princess Tutu
vs.
Fate T. Harlown vs. Signum, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanonoha A’s

Princess Tutu vs. Princess Krahe Seen it, impressed by it, and willing to give it a pass even over one of the better nanoha rivalries.

Group C-2
Goku vs. Piccolo Jr., Dragon Ball
vs.
Sanada Yukimura vs. Date Masamune, Sengoku Basara

Goku vs. Piccolo Jr.

Group C-3
Kamina and Simon vs. Viral, Gurren Lagann
vs.
Lucy vs. Bando, Elfen Lied

Kamina and Simon vs. Viral

Group C-4
Catians vs. Dogisians, Cat Planet Cuties
vs.
Kenichi Shirahama vs. Ragnarok, Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple

Catians vs. Dogisians Based on the other comments alone.

Group C-5
Yang Wen-Li vs. Reinhard von Lohengramm, Legend of the Galactic Heroes
vs.
Kazuki Muto vs. Koushaku “Papillon” Chouno, Buso Renkin

Yang Wen-Li vs. Reinhard von Lohengramm

Without a doubt one of my favorite anime rivalries. You have depth, complexity, intensity, and more importantly an everchaning dynamic between two geniuses with conflicting ideologies and approaches. Strangely enough both men acknowledge and even admire the other. Perhaps that's just the earnest and old school nature of the show, but its an interesting twist.

Group C-6
The Seleçao, Eden of the East
vs.
Shirou Emiya vs. Archer, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks

Shirou Emiya vs. Archer Going with the cheesey shonen rivalry because I'm not really compelled by the one between the Seclao even fits firmly within the defintion of this tournament despite being from the clearly better show.

Group C-7
Kaname Kuran vs. Zero Kiryū, Vampire Knight franchise
vs.
The Organization vs. Yoma/Awakened Beings, Claymore

The Organization vs. Yoma/Awakened Beings

Group C-8
Sousuke Sagara vs. Gauron, Full Metal Panic! franchise
vs.
Shiki Ryougi vs. Souren, Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners

, Sousuke Sagara vs. Gauron.

Group C-9
Maya Kitejima vs. Ayumi Himekawa, Glass Mask
vs.
Strike Witches vs. Neuroi, Strike Witches

Maya Kitejima vs. Ayumi Himekawa

Group C-10
Ash Ketchum and Friends vs. Team Rocket Trio, Pokemon franchise
vs.
Zed vs. Noa, Kiba

Ash Ketchum and Friends vs. Team Rocket Trio
Shallow it may be, but as the guide make adbundantly clear they have consistency and that an important quality for a rivalry.

Group C-11
Humans vs. Machines, The Animatrix
vs.
Light Yagami vs. Near, Death Note

Light Yagami vs. Near, Death Note The lesser of the two Death Note rivalries, but this one has more polish , and just as much melodrama and intensity as the between L and Kira. Sure, it isn't as entertaining or enjoyable, but I'll take what I can get.

Group C-12
Kouga vs. Iga clans, Basilisk
vs.
Full Moon vs. Madoka Wakamatsu, Full Mon wo Sagashite

Kouga vs. Iga clans, An old-school style rivalry that had traditional elements of betrayal and fierce rivalry -- what else do you need?
Group C-13
Arsene Lupin III vs. Inspector Zenigata, Lupin III Franchise
vs.
Kai Ichinose vs. Shuhei Amamiya, Piano Forest

Arsene Lupin III vs. Inspector Zenigata One of the first names that came to mind for this tournament. Sure, their dynamic may not be an exact match based on certain interptations of the criteria, but I'm not going to nitpick at this early stage.
Group C-14
Outlaw Star Crew vs. MacDougal Brothers, Outlaw Star
vs.
Nereids vs. Criminal Siblings, Daphne in the Brilliant Blue

Outlaw Star Crew vs. MacDougal Brothers

Group C-15
Ranma Saotome vs. Ryoga Hibiki, Ranma ½
vs.
Madlax vs. Limelda Jorg, Madlax

Madlax vs. Limelda Jorg

Group C-16

vs.
Kirino Kosaka vs. Ruri “Kuroneko” Gokou, OreImo

C-2: Goku vs. Piccolo defeats Sanade vs. Date, 13-6.
C-3: Kamina+Simon vs. Viral defeats Lucy vs. Bando, 15-4.
C-4: Catians vs. Dogisians takes out Kenichi vs. Ragnarok, 13-6.
C-5: Yang Wen-Li vs. Reinhard defeats Kazuki vs. Papillon, 16-3.
C-6: The Selecao defeats Shirou vs. Archer, 11-8
C-7: The Organization vs. Yoma defeats Kaname vs. Zero, 14-5.
C-8: Sosuke vs. Gauron obliterates Shiki vs. Soren, 18-1.
C-9: Maya vs. Ayumi handily beats Strike Witches vs. Neuroi, 17-2.
C-10: Ash vs. Team Rocket destroys Zed vs. Noa, 17-2.
C-11: Humans vs. Machines barely holds off Light vs. Near, 10-9.
C-12: Koga vs. Iga ninja clans assassinates Full Moon vs. Wakamatsu, 18-1.
C-13: Lupin III vs. Zenigata defeats Kai vs. Shuehi, 13-6.
C-14: Outlaw Star vs. MacDougal Brothers destroys Nereids vs. Criminal Siblings, 17-2.
C-15: Ranma vs. Ryoga defeats Madlax vs. Limelda Jorg, 15-4.
C-16: Mugen vs. Jin decimates Kirino vs. Kuroneko, 18-1.

As expected, a lot of blow-outs, but that also means that next round should be a powerhouse. C-6 and C-11 were the tightest matches throughout, while C-4 was competitive early but saw the Cats/Dogs pull away late.

Next Group is ready and should be up very shortly.

Group D-1
Nagi vs. Zange, Kannagi
vs.
Domon Kassu vs. Master Asia, Mobile Fighter G Gundam

I've seen the first half of Kannagi, and that's enough for me to know that the Nagi/Zange rivalry is pronounced enough to be worthy of at least one victory in this tournament.

Group D-2
The Elrics vs. Homunculi, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise
vs.
Yusaku Godai vs. Shun Mitaka, Maison Ikokku

If there's a case to be argued for the MI rivals here then I want to see it because the Guide entry alone wasn't enough to convince me to pick them over the Elrics/Homunculi, which I don't see as one of the premiere rivalries but nonetheless good enough to win a round or two.

Group D-3
Isamu Dyson vs. Guld Bowman, Macross Plus
vs.
Shinku vs. Suigintou, Rozen Maiden

The Isamu vs. Guld rivalry is real, well-developed, and functions on multiple levels. That's enough for me.

Group D-4
Triela vs. Pinocchio, Gunslinger Girl
vs.
Yusuke Urameshi vs. Shinobu Sensui, Yu Yu Hakusho

Yeesh, I don't like either of these options. Flip a coin and go for yusuke vs. Shinobu, with the expectation that the D-3 winner will beat either one.

Group D-5
Yuki Sohma vs. Kyo Sohma, Fruits Basket
vs.
Yasuna Kamiizumi vs. Tomari Kurusu, Kashimashi ~ Girl Meets Girl ~

In this case I know both, and the Yasuna/Tomari rivalry, although it is a rivalry, is a weak one. There's nothing weak or questionable about Yuki vs. Kyo, though.

Group D-6
Yugi Mutou/Yami vs. Seito Kaiba, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters
vs.
D vs. Meier Link, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

Opting for Yugi vs. Seito here because the D/Meier Link impresses me even less. The winner here is doomed to lose to Yuki vs. Kyo next round anyway, so it doesn't matter much.

Group D-7
Guts vs. Griffith, Berserk
vs.
Porco Rosso vs. Donald Curtis, Porco Rosso

As much reputation as Berserk has, I'm actually going with Porco vs. Donald here. The write-up for it sold me better than the Guts/Griffith write-up did.

Group D-8
Seishu High School vs. Ryuou Academy baseball teams, Cross Game
vs.
Kei Shindo vs. Miyako Miyamura, ef ~ a tale of memories

Supporters of the latter, convince me. Seishu vs. Ryuou isn't a terribly strong choice but it's a definite rivalry nonetheless.

Group D-9
Ayeka vs. Ryoko, Tenchi Muyo! franchise
vs.
Oz Vessalius vs. Baskervilles, Pandora Hearts

Absolutely zero contest here. Ayeka vs. Ryoko is the defining comedy-oriented romantic rivalry in anime, and that hasn't changed in the nearly 20 years since it first appeared. Nobody they could run into before the fourth round should even have a chance to beat them.

Group D-10
Lucy vs. Kurama, Elfen Lied
vs.
Yusuke Urameshi vs. Toguro, Yu Yu Hakusho

Yeesh, another particularly weak match that will lead to an immense blow-out next round. Lucy vs. Kurama at least has some substance to it.

Group D-11
Vash the Stampede vs. Million Knives, Trigun
vs.
Himura Kenshin vs. Makoto Shishio, Ruroni Kenshin

I don't think Vash vs. Knives is an elite rivalry, but it is strong enough to win here.

Group D-12
Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome, Macross Frontier
vs.
Sawako “Sadako” Kuronuma vs. Ume “Kurumi” Kurumizawa, Kimi no Todoke

This is a tricky one. Ranka vs. Sheryl is one of the more unusual rivalries here in that the nature of their relationship changes several times over the course of the series. Still, the Guide entry for their competition didn't sufficiently convince me that the Sadako/Kurumi face-off more deserved to win.

Group D-13
Hikaru Shindou vs. Akira Touya, Hikaru no Go
vs.
Johan vs. Tenma, Monster

Hikaru vs. Akira sounds worthy, and I still question whether Johan/Tenma even belongs here.

Group D-14
Yuri “Yurippe” Nakamura vs. Kanade “Angel” Tachibana, Angel Beats!
vs.
Ikuto Tsukiyomi vs. Tadase Hitori, Shugo Chara

Although not always fought directly, Yuri vs. Angel is a well-established ongoing conflict for much of the series. SC's entry didn't impress me enough for me to pick otherwise.

Group D-15
Pedro vs. That Man, Excel Saga
vs.
Yakumo Fujii and Pai/Sanjiyan vs. Benares, 3x3 Eyes

Two interesting choices here, and in both cases I question whether the bad guy actually sees the good guy(s) as rivals or worthy opponents. Having seen both, I give the slight edge to Yakumo and Pai vs. Benares.

Group D-16
Kazuma vs. Ryuhou, sCRYed
vs.
Gai vs. Pizza/Soldat J, GaoGaiGar

Kazuma vs. Ryuhou defines its series from its first episode to its very last scene. It is the only match-up in this Group that I can legitimately see challenging Ayeka vs. Ryoko.

Oh my god, what is up with this round!? There's like 3 matches where I'm having trouble picking because they're both honestly worthy of going on (not to mention are from series I absolutely love!)

Group D-1 Domon Kassu vs. Master Asia, Mobile Fighter G Gundam

Group D-2 Yusaku Godai vs. Shun Mitaka, Maison Ikokku
Tough group #1. Elrics v Homunculi is pretty much the driving force of the series most of the time and fighting superhumans is just awesome, by no means will I be sad to see them inevitably move on in this match up. But I can't let Yusaku v Mitaka go down without a fight. This is the love triangle fight that other love triangle fights want to be. Yusaku and Mitaka really don't like each other, they're complete and total jerks to each other and no one could possibly mistake them as friends. Not only that, but going on the manga, this rivalry starts at the end of volume one and goes on for over 10 volumes afterwards (well except maybe volume 8 which has the hilarious manga-only Yotsuya v Nikaido fight). Sure, Yusaku and Mitaka pretend to act like civil human beings when they need to, but then they glance at each other with "just shrivel up and die so I can have Kyoko!" glances whenever they get the chance. These guys are a classic and deserve some recognition in this incredibly tough choice for me.

Group D-3 Isamu Dyson vs. Guld Bowman, Macross Plus

Group D-4 Triela vs. Pinocchio, Gunslinger Girl

Group D-5 Yuki Sohma vs. Kyo Sohma, Fruits Basket

Group D-6 Yugi Mutou/Yami vs. Seito Kaiba, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters

Group D-7 Guts vs. Griffith, Berserk

Group D-8 Kei Shindo vs. Miyako Miyamura, ef ~ a tale of memories

Group D-9 Ayeka vs. Ryoko, Tenchi Muyo! franchise

Group D-10 Yusuke Urameshi vs. Toguro, Yu Yu Hakusho
Dammit, tough choice #2. Maybe it's cus Shinobu v Yuskue took up a much shorter arc, I was ok with the coin toss, but v Toguro took up a far sizeable chunk and somehow seemed a lot more personal, probably due to Genkai's inclusion. While Lucy v Bando was more one sided, v Kurama was quite a bit more epic for me, but I don't think it was epic enough for me to not vote for v Toguro.

Group D-11 Vash the Stampede vs. Million Knives, Trigun
Sure, it only lasts 2 eps and I think part of me voting for them here is that I was actually interested enough in the show to eagerly finish this arc while I burned out on Kenshin much earlier, but I also burned out cus I didn't care about Kenshin's rivalry with this guy (this was the arc where I threw my hands up and went "screw it! I'm reading another manga!" after all)

Group D-12 Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome, Macross Frontier

Group D-13 Hikaru Shindou vs. Akira Touya, Hikaru no Go
Dammit. Damn. It. Tough choice #3 since I care about both series. But this one isn't quite as tough for me. I feel like Johan v Tenma is a bit one sided, which was what certainly hurt Lucy v Bando (although Bando certainly enjoyed his fights). Johan is kinda standing there going "Come at me, bro!" and he really could care less about Tenma chasing him because let's face it, nothing Tenma does ever really stops any of his plans during the entire series. Johan knows that Tenma is after him and doesn't even consider him a threat, he might as well not even be there and Johan acts like it with no real consequences until the very very very end. In Akira v Hikaru on the other hand, Hikaru is chasing Akira's shadow while Akira is (unknowingly) chasing Sai's and they're both aware that they're chasing each other and here it causes them both to improve their game as much as they can. This is also the real reason that Hikaru starts caring about Go in the first place and sees it as an actual past time and not just something to make the ghost following him around stfu. Despite the minimal contact they have throughout most of the series, the very fact that the other exists and is climbing the ranks is enough to make the other go "he's not gonna beat me! I'm gonna get better!", so this is an easy vote and a duo that should go far.

Group D-14 Yuri “Yurippe” Nakamura vs. Kanade “Angel” Tachibana, Angel Beats!

Group D-15 Pedro vs. That Man, Excel Saga

Group D-16 Gai vs. Pizza/Soldat J, GaoGaiGar

Seishu High School vs. Ryuou Academy baseball teams

Group D-9
Ayeka vs. Ryoko, Tenchi Muyo! franchise
vs.
Oz Vessalius vs. Baskervilles, Pandora Hearts

Oz Vessalius vs. Baskervilles
Pandora Hearts is one of the best shounen anime I have seen so far. It's a plot-heavy series, loosely based on Alice in Wonderland, that doesn't go off on a tangent story arcs and sticks to the main plot. Besides, in comparison to other shounens, it's complicated and has a great cast of characters, some of whom are yanadere. Moreover, it has a cool sinister atmosphere like Grimms' original fairy tales.

Sorry, it seems that Pandora Hearts doesn't stand a chance, so I shamelessly took this opportunity to put a little advertisement for this show. I recommend watching it, or even better reading it. It needs more love. Razz

Group D-10
Lucy vs. Kurama, Elfen Lied
vs.
Yusuke Urameshi vs. Toguro, Yu Yu Hakusho

Yusuke Urameshi vs. Toguro

Group D-11
Vash the Stampede vs. Million Knives, Trigun

Himura Kenshin vs. Makoto Shishio

Group D-12
Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome, Macross Frontier
vs.
Sawako “Sadako” Kuronuma vs. Ume “Kurumi” Kurumizawa, Kimi no Todoke

Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome
The rivalry between Sawako and Kurumi was very short. Kurumi turned into Sawako's friend in no time.

Group D-13
Hikaru Shindou vs. Akira Touya, Hikaru no Go
vs.
Johan vs. Tenma, Monster

Hikaru Shindou vs. Akira Touya
They are one of the best rivals in shounens.

Besides, while Johan is undoubtedly Tenma's nemesis, it is hard to say what Johan thinks about Tenma. As classicalzawa pointed out Johan v Tenma is a bit one sided.

Group D-14
Yuri “Yurippe” Nakamura vs. Kanade “Angel” Tachibana, Angel Beats!
vs.
Ikuto Tsukiyomi vs. Tadase Hitori, Shugo Chara

Yuri “Yurippe” Nakamura vs. Kanade “Angel” Tachibana

Group D-15
Pedro vs. That Man, Excel Saga
vs.
Yakumo Fujii and Pai/Sanjiyan vs. Benares, 3x3 Eyes

Pedro vs. That Man

Group D-16
Kazuma vs. Ryuhou, sCRYed
vs.
Gai vs. Pizza/Soldat J, GaoGaiGar

Kazuma vs. Ryuhou

Dang it, so many of the rivalries I nominated are going up against each other in the first round! Anime cry

Group D-1
Nagi vs. Zange, Kannagi
vs.
Domon Kassu vs. Master Asia, Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Nagi vs. Zange

Group D-2
The Elrics vs. Homunculi, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise
vs.
Yusaku Godai vs. Shun Mitaka, Maison Ikokku
Elrics vs. Homunculi

Group D-3
Isamu Dyson vs. Guld Bowman, Macross Plus
vs.
Shinku vs. Suigintou, Rozen Maiden
Shinku vs. Suigintou gets my vote because although this rivalry was instigated because they are forced to fight each other due to the Alice game, it gets deeply personal when a misunderstanding between the two is perceive as the gravest of insults by Suigintou. As living dolls, they adore their creator Rozen and wish to repay him for giving them life. Rozen's one wish is to make a perfect, flawless doll, but all of us who have chased perfection in sports or art know there is no such thing as utter perfection. Rozen is obsessed with making a perfect doll though, and so because of their devotion the dolls battle each other to grant his wish.

Suigintou is the First Doll of the Rozen Maiden, the first doll Rozen created that had life. But as the first doll she is the most flawed which caused Rozen to abandon her before she was completed, and so she is absolutely desperate to become Alice and win Rozen's affection. Shinku on the other hand, was a favorite of Rozen and is one of the dolls best equipped for battle. Suigintou hates Shinku for that and for perceiving that Shinku looks down on her, and Shinku doesn't think an incomplete, unstable doll is worthy of becoming Alice.

Group D-4
Triela vs. Pinocchio, Gunslinger Girl
vs.
Yusuke Urameshi vs. Shinobu Sensui, Yu Yu Hakusho
Triela vs. Pinocchio

Group D-5
Yuki Sohma vs. Kyo Sohma, Fruits Basket
vs.
Yasuna Kamiizumi vs. Tomari Kurusu, Kashimashi ~ Girl Meets Girl ~
Yuki vs. Kyo

Group D-6
Yugi Mutou/Yami vs. Seito Kaiba, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters
vs.
D vs. Meier Link, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Yugi/Yami vs. Seito Kaiba

Group D-7
Guts vs. Griffith, Berserk
vs.
Porco Rosso vs. Donald Curtis, Porco Rosso
Porco Rosso vs. Donald Curtis gets my vote, because in almost every way possible, these two clash. Professionally, Porco is a pirate bounty hunter and Curtis was hired by the pirates, Porco is an old, cynical but experienced seaplane pilot and Curtis is a young hot-shot from America. On top of that their reputations as the best seaplane pilots around are on the line and Curtis falls in love with Gina, a woman Porco has been in love with for years. This leads them to a seaplane pilot dual; a one-on-one dogfight that draws hundreds of spectators.

Group D-8
Seishu High School vs. Ryuou Academy baseball teams, Cross Game
vs.
Kei Shindo vs. Miyako Miyamura, ef ~ a tale of memories
Seishu High School vs. Ryuou Academy baseball teams

Group D-9
Ayeka vs. Ryoko, Tenchi Muyo! franchise
vs.
Oz Vessalius vs. Baskervilles, Pandora Hearts
Ayeka vs. Ryoko

Group D-10
Lucy vs. Kurama, Elfen Lied
vs.
Yusuke Urameshi vs. Toguro, Yu Yu Hakusho
Yusuke vs. Toguro gets my support by a hair because they get much more screen time and their rivalry has a much greater effect on the series.

Group D-11
Vash the Stampede vs. Million Knives, Trigun
vs.
Himura Kenshin vs. Makoto Shishio, Ruroni Kenshin
Vash the Stampede vs. Million Knives wins here. Hard choice though since both rivalries are very similar in that most of the series, the protagonist fights underlings of the main villain and doesn't get to the big baddie until near the end. What gives the Trigun rivalry the slight edge is the twist of spoiler[ Vash and Knives being brothers, identical twins at that, and how different their ideological views became even though they grew up in the same environment].

Group D-12
Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome, Macross Frontier
vs.
Sawako “Sadako” Kuronuma vs. Ume “Kurumi” Kurumizawa, Kimi no Todoke
Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome

Group D-13
Hikaru Shindou vs. Akira Touya, Hikaru no Go
vs.
Johan vs. Tenma, Monster
Hikaru vs. Akira, without a doubt. This should be one of the top runners in this tournament. Their rivalry is the main focus of this 75 episode long series, and throughout the entire thing it is frought with Go battles, frustration, ambition, and most of all the fierce determination to become stronger.

Akira is a Go prodigy with no one anywhere near his age standing even a chance at beating him. That's why it comes as an utter shock when a boy his age(Hikaru), who is such an amateur he doesn't even hold the Go stones in the correct manner, soundly beats him. Akira becomes obsessed with having a rematch with Hikaru, but what he doesn't know is that Hikaru is possessed by the spirit of an ancient Go master who played through Hikaru. As Hikaru learns the rules and strategies of Go, he becomes interested in playing himself and is able to appreciate just how skillful Akira is at his age and so makes beating Akira without help his goal.

Group D-14
Yuri “Yurippe” Nakamura vs. Kanade “Angel” Tachibana, Angel Beats!
vs.
Ikuto Tsukiyomi vs. Tadase Hitori, Shugo Chara
Yuri vs. Angel

Group D-15
Pedro vs. That Man, Excel Saga
vs.
Yakumo Fujii and Pai/Sanjiyan vs. Benares, 3x3 Eyes
Dang, Im not allowed to defer, am I? Well, whoever wins is going to get squashed by Kazuma vs. Ryuhou so I'll go with Pedro vs. That Man.

Group D-16
Kazuma vs. Ryuhou, sCRYed
vs.
Gai vs. Pizza/Soldat J, GaoGaiGar
Kazuma vs. Ryuhou. When I watched this show, I got the distinct impression that the whole of the story and setting revolved around the rivalry between Kazuma and Ryuhou. There were other things going on but their rivalry is one of the most intense dog fights I've seen.

I was halfway done when my computer urped and lost what I’d already written! I’m copying to Microsoft Word first from now on!

Group D-1

Domon Kassu vs. Master Asia, Mobile Fighter G Gundam

I just don’t get how being worshipped as pop idols make goddesses stronger. I do understand the Master/Student relationship especially when they end up on opposite sides.

Group D-2

The Elrics vs. Homunculi, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise

I really think that why this is the best rivalry is because the Homunculi, despite of being able to live for a long time, are envious of Humans and because of that envy, they want to destroy them.
You saw that at the end of the fight between Roy Mustang and Envy by what Envy said before he killed himself. And the Elric Brothers are doing their best to prevent the Homunculi from achieving their goals.

Group D-3

Isamu Dyson vs. Guld Bowman, Macross Plus

Group D-4

Triela vs. Pinocchio, Gunslinger Girl

Pinocchio and Triela are very much alike. And while Triela was upset over being defeated, she certainly rattled Pinocchio’s cage because he knew he very nearly lost.

Group D-5

Yuki Sohma vs. Kyo Sohma, Fruits Basket

Group D-6

D vs. Meier Link, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

Group D-7

Porco Rosso vs. Donald Curtis, Porco Rosso

Group D-8

Seishu High School vs. Ryuou Academy baseball teams, Cross Game

Group D-9

Ayeka vs. Ryoko, Tenchi Muyo! franchise

Ayeka and Ryoko have one of the more hysterical rivalries in anime. Both probably are not the best one on the world for Tenshi to be with. But the level of completion that these to go to is really fun to watch. But it’s also fun when they join forces.

Group D-10

Lucy vs. Kurama, Elfen Lied

Group D-11

Himura Kenshin vs. Makoto Shishio, Ruroni Kenshin

Both groups are very similar. Both are responsible for the deaths of many and the protagonists want to make up for what they’ve done. But of the two, Kenshi vs. Shishio is the stronger pair.

Group D-12

Sawako “Sadako” Kuronuma vs. Ume “Kurumi” Kurumizawa, Kimi no Todoke

Group D-13

VOTE CHANGE

Hikaru vs. Akira

classicalzawa's argument for these two conviced me to change.
Group D-14

Yuri “Yurippe” Nakamura vs. Kanade “Angel” Tachibana, Angel Beats!

Group D-15

Yakumo Fujii and Pai/Sanjiyan vs. Benares, 3x3 Eyes

Group D-16

Kazuma vs. Ryuhou, sCRYed

This is one of those series where you know that Kazuma and Ryuhou would NEVER be friends no matter what sort of situation they were in. I could easily see Ryuhou as the Student Council President and Kazuma the PITA Slacker that causes trouble for the school, in or out of it. In the long run, a much better rivalry.

D vs. Meier Link, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

D v Meier Link

Group D-7
Guts vs. Griffith, Berserk
vs.
Porco Rosso vs. Donald Curtis, Porco Rosso

As good as Beserk is, any rivalry between Guts and Griffith is never much more than a simmer until the last few episodes. For much of the series, Guts cedes all moral authority to Griffiths, even though he wishes he could win in a sword fight. The Porco Rosso v Donald Curtis rivalry is absolutely central to the film and helps Porco to come to terms with his past. The rivalry is witty and the fights are wonderfully animated.

Group D-8
Seishu High School vs. Ryuou Academy baseball teams, Cross Game

Lucy v Karama

Group D-11
Vash the Stampede vs. Million Knives, Trigun
vs.
Himura Kenshin vs. Makoto Shishio, Ruroni Kenshin

Himura Kenshin v Makoto Shishio. Largely a vote against one of the silliest, most overrated and tedious anime I’ve ever seen – Trigun. Both Trigun characters are completely outshone by their counterparts from Rurouni Kenshin.

Group D-12
Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome, Macross Frontier
vs.
Sawako “Sadako” Kuronuma vs. Ume “Kurumi” Kurumizawa, Kimi no Todoke

Sawako Kuronuma v Ume Kurumizawa

Group D-13
Hikaru Shindou vs. Akira Touya, Hikaru no Go
vs.
Johan vs. Tenma, Monster

Johan v Tenma. Although Johan does not explicitly acknowledge a rivalry with Tenma until late in the series, I do not agree with the contention that this rivalry doesn’t deserve to be in the tournament. Johan and Tenma represent one of the most fundamental and powerful oppositions in human culture – the battle between good and evil. Civilisation is at stake here and, should Johan win, human society will be very nasty indeed. What’s more, it is in the nature of evil to deceive and, I would argue, that Johan’s elusiveness is quite deliberate: I believe he is fully aware of their rivalry.

Group D-14
Yuri “Yurippe” Nakamura vs. Kanade “Angel” Tachibana, Angel Beats!

Group D-1
Domon Kassu vs. Master Asia, Mobile Fighter G Gundam

Group D-2

Yusaku Godai vs. Shun Mitaka, Maison Ikokku

I usually do not pick romantic rivalries over adversaries, but I guess I never felt the FMA adversarial relationships were particularly clear nor as personal as others (with exceptions, of course). Godai and Coach Mitaka were always on each other's cases, often driving away their shared goal because of their pigheadedness.

Group D-3

Group D-12
Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome, Macross Frontier

Group D-13
Johan vs. Tenma, Monster

Tenma's constant quest for Johan and Johan's perpetual toying and riling up of Tenma make them one of the 2 pairs I feel should be in the finals of this tournament (conveniently, they're on opposite sides of the draw. Inconveniently, others do not agree with this assessment of Tenma and Johan).

Match D-1: Domon Kasshu vs Master Asia (G Gundam)

Match D-2: The Elrics vs Homunculi (Fullmetal Alchemist)
This feud dominates both adaptations of the FMA series where both were at clear odds with one another with the Elrics piecing together the connection the Homunculi have to the Philosopher's Stone and the Homunculi making sure the Elrics act in their interests and keep them from finding out information that jeopardize their goals.

Match D-3: Isamu Dyson vs Guld Bowman (Macross Plus)

Match D-4: Triela vs Pinocchio (Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino)
The best character dynamic to get out of the GSG franchise with both having different tragic upbringings in being raised to be young assassins, especially when it plays a major part in the development of Triela's character. Yusuke and Sensui seems like an interesting feud to come out of Yu Yu Hakusho as I didn't see beyond the tournament arc with Toguro. But it appears to lacks the unique chemistry and developments that I seen come out of Triela and Pino.

Match D-5: Yuki and Kyo Sohma (Fruits Basket)

Match D-6: Yugi Muto vs Seto Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh)

Match D-7: Guts vs Griffith (Berserk)

Match D-8: Seishu vs Ryuou (Cross Game)

Match D-9: Ayeka vs Ryoko (Tenchi Muyo franchise)
The best duo to butt heads over a guy within a harem comedy series that I have seen to date. Not too many harem titles have the fun chemistry of these two gals in their neverending rivalry to woo Tenchi.

Match D-10: Yusuke vs Toguro (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Not the best rivalry I've seen by any means. But Yusuke and Toguro have more frequent chemistry with one another than what I seen of Lucy and Kurama in Elfen Lied.

Match D-11: Vash vs Knives (Trigun)

Match D-12: Ranka Lee vs Sheryl Nome (Macross Frontier)

Match D-13: Hikaru vs Akira (Hikaru no Go)
Some of you might be shocked to see me turn against the major rivalry of the excellent Monster series when I had pressed support of their nomination. But after giving this match some thought, I do have to find it speculative as well over whether or not Johan acknowledged his rivalry with Tenma.

Match D-14: Yuri vs Tenshi (Angel Beats)

Match D-15: Pedro vs That Man (Excel Saga)

Match D-16: Kazuma vs Ryuhou (Scryed)

Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome, Macross Frontier
vs.
Sawako “Sadako” Kuronuma vs. Ume “Kurumi” Kurumizawa, Kimi no Todoke
Voting for: Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome
Well, Kurumi did clearly state they're rivals, but to me, it doesn't matter if she does everything in her might to get the girls away from Kazehaya. She doesn't stand a chance in the first place. I think it's doubtful that she would've gotten Kazehaya to like her even if Sawako didn't exist. Not only that... I remember Sawako actually benefiting from her meddling, through some miscalculation and Sawako realizing she's in love.

Voting for: Domon Kassu vs. Master Asia, Mobile Fighter G Gundam

Group D-2
Voting for: The Elrics vs. Homunculi, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise

I haven't seen much of FMA though the original series is ready and waiting for me when I'm in the right mood. But I know this is a rivalry with lots of substance behind it.

Group D-3
Voting for: Isamu Dyson vs. Guld Bowman, Macross Plus

Group D-4
Voting for: Triela vs. Pinocchio, Gunslinger Girl

I've finally started watching the end of Il Teatrino and I really do love this match-up.

Group D-5
Voting for: Yuki Sohma vs. Kyo Sohma, Fruits Basket

I'm actually a bit sad about this match-up because the other pair sounds quite interesting, enough so that I'm probably going to put the series on my list of things to check out. But the Furaba pair are just perfect rivals for this and so I have to vote for them.

Group D-6
Voting for: Yugi Mutou/Yami vs. Seito Kaiba, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters

I never really felt like D and Meier were really great entrants here. And the competition sounds strong enough.

Group D-7
Voting for: Guts vs. Griffith, Berserk

Group D-8
Voting for: Seishu High School vs. Ryuou Academy baseball teams, Cross Game
