Honestly, it's not that difficult a read! Attention spans, anyone? I enjoyed the article very much, although the only title in this genre I've ever read was Fake. I found this part especially interesting:

Quote:
It has been posited that women enjoy yaoi because it is a way for them to be entertained by sex in a non-threatening way, without the anxieties and problems associated with being female, such as pregnancy and misogyny. Additionally, when the sex is between two men, women can identify with the submissive character if they wish without having to worry about misogyny. In a traditional heterosexual sexually explicit pairing, the woman has a choice to identify with the (usually) dominant male or the (usually) passive female. If she identifies with the male, she has the problem of being in the position to control a female, which may be uncomfortably close to home. If she identifies with the female, she is made to be subordinate to the male. With this in mind, it is easier to understand how sex between two beautiful men, one of which is more feminized, can overcome this dilemma.

And the fact that this article was written by a woman makes the text all the more legtitimate (to me, at least). Honestly, people... It is my belief that sexuality can be discussed in a mature and even academic way. It all hinges on the maturity of the reader, I guess. (I won't be surprised if the post directly after mine irrationally alleges "LOL you just likd it because ur a fangirl!")

This is an incredibly interesting article. It's good to see that the market is thriving.

Quote:
Currently in Japan, the term yaoi has negative connotations and now specifically refers to doujinshi and the most sexually explicit M/M material for women.

Confusingly, Americans adapted these terms, using them in a way that would be incorrect in Japan.

It's amazing how we have a way of shaping everything that enters the US from a foreign source, language, ideas, etc., into a form all our own.

I've been looking at buying the Gravitation anime for a while. Also, Mirage of Blaze, another shounen-ai, is very affordable so I'm going to purchase it soon. I saw it on a preview on one of The Twelve Kingdoms DVDs and it looked pretty cool. I saw later that it's shounen-ai. When I watched the preview again, I could see how "handsome" the two protagonists looked. It looks like these two anime have an interesting plot. At least, one that is much better than any harem anime that go absolutely nowhere.

It's good to see that the comics/manga industry is developing more storylines that women can enjoy. I hope that DC and Marvel Comics are taking notes.

BTW, perhaps a bit off-topic, but there is one DC Comic that has has explored a lesbian relationship. In Gotham Central, which covers the men and women of the Gotham City Police Force, Detective Renee Montoya, one of my favourite characters from the comics and animated series, is a lesbian and she has to deal with the fact that her parents are strongly opposed to her relationship with a woman as well as deal with the stigma attached to a police officer who is "different" from her colleagues. The storyline surrounding this is very well written and incredibly interesting to follow.

Thanks Aaron White for posting this article.

Why? it's just another sexual outlet.

Anyway...

Yaoi is not my cup of tea. But many people like it, so yay them.

Heh, I remember when I first heard of yaoi I honestly thought it was a joke. But hey, if that's what some people like then more power to 'em. No need to tell someone to 'grow up' for thinking different.

Hey! I'm a rookie here at ANN! I just stop by at this article!

Well, anyweiz, I'm not really much of a yaoi fan, more like a shounen-ai (although their're connected somehow... one way or another...) by the influence of GRAVITATION! Omigod! How I love this anime! Although I haven't seen the anime... but I have the Manga!! I reaaallllly love it!!!!! Very Happy

By the way, people who think people likes shounen-ai/yaoi are perverted ones are really sooooo dead wrong! It really depends on the person whether to think it's something like this or something like that... I myself is an example! I'm just a kid (around 14-17) but I read Gravitation Manga - which, it is a OLDER TEEN Rate. I don't think Gravi is such a nasty-little-son-of-a-holy-crap Twisted Evil thing but something really sweet! Embarassed

Anyway, is there somebody here likes Grave 'sides me??

And people wonder why I scream at night. Nothing against Yaoi fans out there, after all, they aren't as twisted and bitter as Furry fans.

I'm not very big on Yaoi. I much prefer shounen-ai. >> For obvious reasons. Yaoi is supposed to be ' sexually explicit', while shounen-ai is not at all so.

I'm a non-yaoi guy, but I proofread a friend of mine's Gundam Wing yaoi whenever she asks (I like proofing fanfics). Remembering my experience when she invited me to see an ep. of Gravitation (and not telling me what it was about) I now handle yaoi most of the time in two different ways . . . either I take two showers, or I'd down half a gallon of milk. Either I'd be drunk on milk or very clean.

(Yes, I had a mature comment lined it but I couldn't help myself Razz)

I'm a Gravitation fan. I haven't read the manga or seen the OAV, but the TV series was entertaining enough. A bit cliched, but good for a few laughs and the characters were surprisingly sympathetic and dark. It's something I'd probably like to rewatch sometime soon.

In general, I don't really care for yaoi. The fact I generally want to get the same things out of a homosexual romance story as a heterosexual one basically gets rid of the gimmick of yaoi for me, and unfortunately a lot of it is complete crap unless you like the gimmick. Also, I avoid everything sexually explicit, so I make a big effort to avoid yaoi by the Japanese definition of it. That's one of the reasons I liked Gravitation: the casualness of the relationships and the fact it focused more on the actual emotions as opposed to seeing two guys getting it on.
