I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced a problem with manga loitering at the bookstore? By "loitering" I mean this: Sometimes when I go to the local Border's to check out the manga I turn into the aisle and there's a guy or a girl sitting on the floor reading manga and they never move. The problem is that they are sitting with their back on the right side of the aisle and their legs going across to the left side, basically sprawled, taking up the whole thing. And it's like you're looking up to a certain point, and you get up to the point where they are, and do they move? NO! And you have to step around their legs or say excuse me, can I get through. Or sometimes they're laying down in the aisle! I mean, come on. And then there's times when there are 3-4 people there like that. The only place I see this is in the Manga section for some reason. I mean there's plenty of tables you can read at, so move your big head and butt! You shouldn't have to step over people to look at books or have to ask someone to move.

I've never had that problem myself, but I would just step over them without saying anything. If they get offended, tell them there's plenty of tables to sit at so they won't be in people's way.

I don't mind when people are reading the novels in the store but when the person or persons is sitting in the narrow aisle where the manga is it annoys me because normally I have no room to walk so
then I just try not to walk over there to be polite and just look at other parts of the manga section until they leave. They could go sit in the cafe or somewhere else instead of blocking me. Wink

I rarely have that kind of problem myself. Though I will occasionally run into someone sitting on the ground, I haven't run into anyone "sprawled out" or laying down; but as long as they're not in my way I don't care, but if they are in my way I just ask them politely to move. But for the most part, people go to the chairs or the tables because they have enough sense to know that those are more comfortable than a floor.

Now what I do have a big problem with, is when those people bend or tear the pages and then put them back on the shelves. So when I go to buy manga I've got to inspect it to make sure it's in good condition before I buy it.

Yeah, I've been to more than a few stores where "manga loitering" occurs. It's the most frustrating when THEY glare at YOU for trying to get a graphic novel, or reach over to see another manga. And yeah, I've seen some sprawlage as well. =_= I try to be polite about it though, but I really wish they'd just get a chair.

while it is annoying, is saying excuse me really too much to say? If someone is blocking my view, I just politely ask them to move and thats the end of that.

Huh, different continent, same problem. But it applies only to mega book stores that carry manga. The problem isnt really that people block the way, which they do, or that they dont move, which they do, but that by them its hard to find a manga that would be fresh. Most volumes are already a bit messed up by constant reading them: pages falling out, the corners bent... its un ungodly sight I tells you. Thats why I dont buy my manga there.

Not only that but they're also blocking the manga section. So you want to get a certain manga, you have to ask them to move.

I see this happenning a lot. Young kids or even older adult will have stacks of mangas by his side on the floor, blocking everyone's way, especially for the people looking to buy it. Heck, they might even have the last copy of the book you want which is even more irritating since they arn't planning on buying it.
Bookstore arn't libraries, but it seem these kids just tag along with their moms and while they're mom is off exploring some erotic novels, they're free to do whatever they want and leave a mess when they're done.

I see this all the time in big bookstores (which is odd since they could probobly find a chair to sit down at if they looked hard enough). It's also happened at the comicbook store I go to, which is even more obnoxious because of how small it is (a couple of yaoi fangirls blocked an entire section one time).

Yes!! This happens everytime I go to check out the manga section... I mean, I don't mind if they stand in the aisle flipping through the mangas but I don't like it when they just lie down in the narrow aisles and you can't get through to the manga Anime hyper And the worst part is that there are chairs right next to the manga aisle! So if they would just go to the chairs they can be right next to the manga and out of other peoples way!! The chairs are also alot nicer than lieing down on the floor... I just don't get it...

Maybe it's time that some people opened up some manga cafes? Of course they wouldn't work in the US. Maybe in another 10 years if manga continues to make strides. I have also seen the people with a stack of manga beside them before. I know in the past couple of years, the bookstores have gotten to where they are places to hang out as much as to buy anything. Technically, you really could just go in, and read about 5 mangas a day, or really any book in there, and just treat the bookstore like a library. I don't know, maybe they're TOO relaxed. When I go into an anime store, there's a little sign saying basically you can't just come in and read manga for hours, and the comic store too. You can't just go in there and read comic books. I've never sat down and read a manga in a bookstore, yeah, I'll kinda look through it, maybe read a couple of pages here and there to see if I like it. I agree that the manga get beaten up before you even buy them. And I didn't mean that ALL loungers are rude, just 75%! Very Happy Some of them will say "Do you need me to move?" or "Am I in your way?" I also do not understand why they do not find a table to sit at. Are they lonely? Do they want you to talk to them? Do they want you to go "Oh, is that Di Gi Charat you're reading, the one I want to buy?" Very Happy

Do you think people should be able to just sit down and read books in the bookstore? I'm kinda split about it. You're not going to have too many people coming in to read Proust's Remembrance of Things Past so with fiction that's ok but manga and other comic graphic novels are very high traffic and short-term reading so you have more people thumbing through them all the time. But I guess there's nothing really Borders or Barnes and Noble can do about it in the end.

my borders near my workplace has chairs in a lounge type area. (it's a upscale mall in manhatten) it's also how i read so many manga while collecting so few... (no downloading for me!)

there are still manga loungers but seeing as how they doubled the section from last year — i think they get decent sales.

I have to admit; when I go to the bookstore to read manga, it's when I want to kill a little time. Because of the way the manga is placed at my two main bookshops, it's easy for me to get out of the way of traffic (the manga bookcase is sandwiched between two window areas with no shelves at one store, and is surrounded by areas with sofas and chairs at another) so I've never really though too hard about the problems it causes to other people.

I think the best way would be to probably have one or two "display" copies, and, say, shrinkwrap the rest.

I don't do this at my comic stores, as they just don't have the space.

What's the big deal? Just say, "excuse me," and they'll understand that you want to look at the shelf. Honestly, people complain about the smallest things around here. Heaven forbid you might have to, gasp, speak to another human being, one of the skills nessessary for holding any sort of job in the states.

Fyi I work at a comic shop, so we get this all the time. It's never a problem. So stop whining. :)

Did you ever notice that not all people who read manga have common courtesy or are polite enough to do so?
