I would like to say Damn Soccer moms. Im sure some other people feel the same. Insted of complaining when the find out what is avalible to there kids they should know what is avalible to them or even have a little idea of what is. They say keep kids away from violence drugs on tv and books. And they think there kids will turn out fine.

I'd say that the source is definitely Japanese, especially since there was a 25-episode anime series based on it; it's not like they would animate a series from American source material, right?

You'd have the same story if the kid had been reading Lolita or Howard's End.

The difference being that, unfortunately, western society still sterotypes comics and cartoons as being only for kids.

I find this funny, but it's usually the sheltered children who do all the bad things when they get older. Surprised

Also, from what I understand, Peach Girl was created for a Tokyopop contest and is not a Japanese creation, so that loser family can go to Japan and sue all they want, they'll never find the people who wrote the manga.

You must have it mixed up with another manga. Peach Girl is definetly Japanese. If someone in America had made it up for a contest, why would there be an anime and a live-action TV show in Japan based on it?

He's thinking about Peach Fuzz, a touching story about a girl and her ferret. Or something like that.

Books at libraries have never been regulated, at least not that I've ever seen. Anyone can check out anything. I was reading books by V.C. Andrews which definitely has rape and incest and abuse and all the fun stuff when I was around middle school age.

Actually they are . . . sort of. There are hundreds of books not allowed in school libraries across the land because of "controversial material". For instance, the story James and the Giant Peach was banned because there was smoking and marijuana use.

It is impossible to fully sanitize a child's world, reading is no different than what a child can see on tv or real life

Y'know, I'd love it if the mom then said in a press conference "I'm going to protect my family from the horrors of reading filthy manga . . . and make sure she watches clean, educational TV." Rolling Eyes

here's something our Comics Editor pulled up last year:

Or, google for "banned books list" and see what you get. Those above are the two best I found.

At least this gives me a rant I can do sometime this week. The list probably doesn't include manga, but Google that, too.

I think this is completely stupid that the mother is blaming the library for letting her child read material like this. Like the librarian said, it's impossible for them to screen every person who checks out a book from the library. If the mother was there with the child when she was checking out a book from the library and if she was concerned about what she was reading, she should have checked the back for the ratings. The fact that this manga was in the YOUNG ADULTS section should have given her the idea that, "Hey, this comic might be too mature for my child to read! I should check it out myself first to see if it's ok!". But because the idiotic parents of America have this mentality that all comics and cartoons are just for kids, they don't think ahead about this type of thing. And if the mother was letting the child go to the library alone and thought her child was too irresponible to handle the young adults section, she shouldn't have let her go by herself or tell her not to check anything out from the young adults section.

Of course, parents hardly ever want to do any actual parenting themselves. When their child does something wrong, most of the time they want to start pointing fingers at everyone else because they just can't admit that they made a mistake. And what exactly are they going to accomplish by forbidding her daughter from reading the rest of Peach Girl when she's already been exposed to that kind of material? By sheltering her from these issues instead of talking to her about them, these images will only stay in her mind and she'll just get more and more curious about what she was exposed to but never got any answers about, which will only just screw her up more in the long run, which isn't the manga's fault or the library's, but the parents fault for not teaching her a little bit about life and keeping an eye on what her daughter was into. It's like that commercial I've seen where the daughter is thanking her dad for all the things he taught her not to do like drugs and alcohol, but then she asks at the end, "But daddy, why didn't you tell me about sex?" or something along those lines.

If parents actually took an interest in what their children were into for a change, things like this wouldn't happen. Parents rarely ever want to care about any of their children's interests, unless they're doing something like sports or they're in the band or something like that, which only requires them to attend an event once in a blue moon where all they have to do is clap at the end of it, but other than they don't want to care. Unless it's something that requires some actual effort, parents don't want to find out what their children's interests are and actually have conversations about it with them. But if this mother actually acted like she cared that manga was one of her daughter's interests, discussed the themes presented within manga with her, actually learned something about her own kid, did a little research about what her kid was into, and then let her child know what type of material they want her to avoid, this might not have ever had to happen. But because parents don't care about their kids' hobbies and interests, they wait too late to tell them about important things and then when something like this happens, they start pointing fingers at everyone else to cover up their bad parenting.

What pisses me off most about this report is that they don't even bother to tell the girl's side of the story. All they do is focus on the poor mother and her plight in an pathetic attempt to take what isn't that big of a deal and make it into a crisis so the mother can get the soccer moms of America to do her parenting for her. But they don't bother to ask the girl questions like, why did you check out this comic, what did you think about the material presented in it, have you ever been exposed to this type of material before, and were you actually traumatized by what was in it? But they only cover one side of the story and the Problem Solver person makes it out like all manga is like Peach Girl. It pisses me off that they failed to mention that not all manga is like this and that manga series do have ratings on them. The next time this mother buys her daughter a manga (if she ever lets her read it again), she should use her brain and think ahead about checking for ratings on the back. I just hope Tokyopop doesn't start editing manga like Viz already does, but unless this mother starts sueing Tokyopop, considering how poorly written this report is, I doubt it'll cause too much attention to the manga market.

It's really stupid how fuzzy logic can be manipulated:

Let say I play Doom 3 with 14-year old kid . . .
Kid goes on to kill 5 classmates in school . . .
14-year old mention he loves playing Doom 3 . . .
Doom 3 was reponsible for kid killing people . . .

See, very open-and-shut. It wasn't the fact that the kid was bullied, beaten up, ignored by school faculty whose job it is to make schools somewhat safe, and ridiculed by family who say he shouldn't be such a "wuss". Nope, it was Doom 3.

Parents, get off your a** and use common sense. Read the manga if you have to and explain things to the kid if you think they're mature enough to handle it. If not, then don't let em see it. Reminds me of the old Grand Theft Auto 3 argument (there have been many).
