I recently played my first visual novel, Narcissu, and cried my head off. I fell in love with it and instantly wanted to read another one. I looked around on the net for another visual novel to play and downloaded Kira ~snowdrop~ on impulse. Apparently this one is an H game, and the version I downloaded removed that scene. Basically, it was vampire porn without the porn, and it bored me to death. I'm a total newbie to visual novels, these two being the only ones I've watched. Can a veteran of these games recommend me some good ones? Now, I'm not asking for places to download, but I can't read Japanese so please only recommend ones that have either been fan translated or have an official North America release.

There's a very nice fan translation for Kanon somewhere, and it is nearing completion. Seeing as the game is pretty old, it should not be too expensive, and while the visuals are a bit outdated compared to more recent visual novel games, it is still extremely engaging due to its strong story, voice work, and music.
It also happens to be immensely superior to its anime adaptation, although Kanon (2006) has potential to be a masterpiece. |

Oh, I love visual novels (sometimes called "dating sims" or "Renai games"). One that I can reccomend and that has been translated and released in the US is Hourglass of Summer. I really enjoyed this one. Great story and characters. Although, I wouldn't recommend watching the anime though... they tried to fit way too much in it, kind of like what Kanon did with its anime counterpart, except Kanon was actually an okay anime. They tried to fit this thing into 2 episodes, which ended up a disaster... but really, play the game, it's great.
One that is supposed to be released in the US (with an unknown release date and has unfortunetly been put on hold at the moment) in none other then, my favorite, Galaxy Angel. I've bought the first one (4 games in the series as of now, Galaxy Angel II just came out in Japan) while in Japan. It's actually a mix of a visual novel and a shooter RPG spaceship game. I absolutely love the game. Although it still has the still images, many of the scenes are actually animated using a combination of CG and 2D animation. After watching the opening (which is awesome, Eternal Love sung by Mari Iijima is one of my favorite songs), I couldn't believe this game came out in 2000. Unlike the anime, the game is serious, so don't be expecting it to be a silly comedy. Although, I'm kind of glad they made the anime a comedy when it was made. I wouldn't have wanted it to turn out to be another "Hourglass of Summer"... |

I own Phantom of the Inferno(I think that's the name). It's supposed to be very good but I haven't gotten far into it. I just forget about it.
They remind me of those choose your own endings crappy(but sometimes fun) books in grade school, except 10x better with real work put into them. |

Visual novels, bishoujo games, dating sims, renai games, they all pretty much fall into the same category. They are immensly popular with anime fans in Japan, but never quite caught on in the US. Although they can often be downloaded online, the games themselves usually aren't online. Examples of popular visual novels adapted into anime would include Fate/stay night, Kanon, To Heart, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, and more. I'm thinking we should add "visual novel" to the lexicon... |

I'm so glad Wolverine Princess started this thread- I've been wanting more info on renai/visual novel games too! This might be a hopeless question, but does anyone know if there are any renai games available for Mac? I kind of figured there wouldn't be, but I really want to play the real thing. Recently I became interested in a hobby of making your own renai games with a system called RenPy- you have to have an artist and know a form of Python programming, and me being only an artist, I thought I was doomed until I met a friend who knows Python with his eyes closed. Anyway, I really want to make my own games, but I'd like to play some good original Japanese games to see what the genre is all about.

I was playing around on the internet yesterday and found these fan made dating sims. Check them out, they're hilarious!

Those are fun until you realize how utterly pointless they are. I was able to catch myself after wasting two hours of my life playing that Love Hina one. And to think that some fansubs are being criticized of having too much profanity... |

Not to mention the script is written by a prepubescent fantard, who constant use of the F word and references to smoking dope(you know why they call it "dope" don't you?) actually makes you lose part of your soul. |

Oh God, I remember playing that Galaxy Angel one a few years ago. I can't believe it's the second result for "Galaxy Angel" on Google... It seriously depresses me that this likely many people's first introduction to Galaxy Angel. I don't even consider those to be "dating sims"... They're just crappy teen made "fan" games that have nothing to do with Galaxy Angel at all with the word "f*ck" thrown around randomly to make it look cool and some other random anime characters inserted into the game.
As you can probably tell, I don't like these games. I did play through it though... the nude mode wasn't worth it. I have much better and higher quality doujinshi material anyway... |
