Solid interview from Publisher's Weekly with the Viz's Alvin Lu. Not only is it a much more informative interview than Viz's usual glorified press releases, but Lu confirms that they will be re-releasing Taiyo Matsumoto's brilliant manga "Black and White" this year for the upcoming film. Unbelievably cool news, and anyone who's interested in smart, progressive and generally awesome manga owes it to themselves to buy this masterpiece as soon as the new edition comes out. |

This is great!! I'm glad Viz is starting to re-release their pulp-ish titles. I hope other titles like Dance Till Tomorrow and Sanctuary get re-released as well!

I wouldn't bet on either of those titles, but who knows? Even though erotic seinen romantic comedies aren't a terribly popular genre in America the old edition of DTT sold well enough to warrant Viz finishing it after PULP got canceled, so that certainly means something. As for Sanctuary, I would think they'd release Strain first despite that title's inferiority to the original Buroson/Ikegami collaboration. |

I'm just hoping it sells well enough to see the old releases remade, too. There are many series that I know a lot of people are looking for that are out of print, that shouldn't be. Especially with all the outcry I've seen for PULP to be brought back from the grave, I sure hope Viz continues this trend.

That would be a dream come true. And unfortunately, it may just stay that, a dream. I just don't see many people that things such as Strain and Sanctuary appeal to within the manga buying demographic. Sure, I'm in there, and I own all the copies of these released, but a handful of obsessive people probably won't be enough money for them to justify releasing it. I'm surprised that classics like Benkei in New York, and Hotel Harbour View are still in print. |

There are a few older manga that Viz didn't seem to have finished. Do you think they might try to finish those too? I somehow doubt it.
For instance, I read Lycanthrope Leo and thought it was an excellent beginning but I'm not sure if they released any volumes after that 1. |

You're SO in luck, because I went to my mom's house last weekend and found all of my old Viz Shop-By-Mail catalogs, dating back all the way to the Spring of '95! To answer your question, no, Viz did NOT release any more of Lycanthrope Leo after their original 7-issue miniseries. Also, regarding our subject of dust-jacketed trades in another thread, Pineapple Army was released as a dusk-jacketed trade as well, so add that to the list. |

 Sounds almost like finding an old Scrye years after playing M:TG. I hope they release the rest of it, but I feel it's not gonna happen.

Yep, me too. I turned 16 somewhere in the middle of when that catalog was valid. 
Yeah, I would guess that one's pretty much a lost cause. Something like Sanctuary that was popular enough to print in its entirety is much more likely. In fact, my Sanctuary Vol. 4 is a FOURTH printing, so the series had to sell pretty dang well. Of course, maybe they'd base their decision on how well DH's release of Crying Freeman is selling, to gauge how today's market would receive the book....

Hear hear! I already own Black & White, and I'd really like to finish collecting No. 5. The name change is interesting. I guess Tekkon Concrete is a more accurate translation, not to mention it'll match the film, but I'm going to have a hard time not calling it Black & White, like I always have. B&W is so much easier to say... |

Again, I wouldn't hold my breath about Viz re-releasing unfinished projects. B&W (It'll always be B&W to me Cloe) has a couple of advantages going for it: Matsumoto has a small but loyal fan base, supposedly it's a favorite of certain Viz editors, it has lots of cross-over potential with a more adult audience (a la Drifting Classroom) and most importantly it has an upcoming movie that is actually going to get some kind of a theatrical release. While Viz is also re-releasing Ito's works I wouldn't count on them going back into the past to resurrect poor sellers, especially stuff from the mid-90's. I'd be satisfied if they give No.5 another chance since its the same author.
While Sanctuary was definitely a bit hit in its day, I'd that volumes back then had very small print runs in order to minimize their loss in case something flopped (kind of like Fanfare has to do nowadays). There is Darkhorse's release of Crying Freeman (which has been reasonably successful if my facts are straight), but they're a lot more open minded than Viz when it comes to selling to the direct market, considering they can't just pick up the newest "it" manga from Shonen Jump. It would be nice to see a re-release of some REALLY old titles (most notably Kamui), though some stuff like Hotel Harbor View is remarkably easy to find. |

Methinks Dark Horse would pick those up in the near future, like they did with Freeman. Though I'm wondering if Viz plans to publish Ping Pong, since they picked up the movie.
That depends on Paprika. If that doesn't do well enough, B+W will probably go to home video.
I wouldn't call it that. I think there were more fans of Fist than Sanctuary at the Buronson panel. Sanctuary also took longer to finish than Freeman. I'd be more interested in them putting the movie on dvd, but music rights prevent it. |

I'd live viz to release all of Black Jack, or someone getting around to doing it. I mean it's Tezuka you think someone would have gotten around to it by now.
