I saw this old early 80s anime short a while back and I simply can't remember the name or how exactly I stumbled upon it and its literally making me get a headache. I figure if there is one place on the net to go and ask it would be here since its pretty obscure. Thankfully I did research about it after I saw the short and learned a ton of random factoids which I clearly remember...just not its name!
)
-Made: Early 80s -Purpose: Shown at the start of a anime convention in Japan -Famous: For its extreme level of fluidity during an era of rather rough animation -Unknown: Because of its unlicensed use/reference of a massive cast in scenes from Gundam to StarWars to Godzilla -Released: For legal reasons it was only released to the public once on LaserDisk, some how they cleverly got around the copy right issues (I believe by offering it for free) -Lead: A girl with bunny ears -Sequel: The following year the convention features the same girl in adult form. -Future reference: Scenes were later re-done by another Japanese anime house for a "fake" anime in a live action Japanese tv show, that makes any sense. -Online: There are poor quality versions of it on YouTube, however without its name its impossible to find the video only a handful of people posted. I will literally curl up in a ball and die if I can't find out its name. Any help is very much welcomed. |

Sorry I just can't resist, I am just itching to help point this person to the video material you are looking for.
The animation that you seek is called the Daicon III and Daicon IV opening animations. The conventions that they were presented at were actually sci-fi cons as even Japan did not have actual, formal anime conventions back then. This title is all you'll need to complete a thorough web search via google etc and I'll provide the link to the Wikipedia article that goes into sufficient detail: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daicon_IV Since he was of recent discussion in a news article I wanted to add that Mr Hideaki Anno was the person most involved in the actual production and animation of this work. Plus one reason why it is so hard to find in good quality is that the animation itself was not filmed in good quality and I've heard that rather than using acetate sheets that are normally used to draw animation on, they used vinyl sheets that you would typically find in a hardware store: cheaper but near impossible to paint on. |
