new to the forum so hello all! my question is, is there a list anywhere of what the all-time top rated anime series in japan are? I've seen a lot of top lists but they are all for what's hot outside of japan. or manga series. but I'm wondering which anime series are consider the best by japanese. Smile

Are you asking about top-rated in terms of TV ratings or top-rated in terms of what fans think are the best?

Polls are done regularly about the latter, and the results vary quite a bit from poll to poll and year to year. That's because titles staying active in fandom consciousness for any significant length of time are much rarer in Japan than in anime communities in the West. As a result, most polls done in Japan about the "best" titles are typically heavily weighted towards what's been hot over the past year or two, even if they're supposed to be all-time-great polls.

One of the few exceptions to this is Neon Genesis Evangelion. Though it usually isn't at the top of these lists (but sometimes it is!), it is invariably somewhere on these lists, no matter what year since 1996 you look at.

Here's a list of sales figures for televised anime I found at Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1ge8w9/alltime_bestselling_tv_anime_average_sales/

These shows have sold at least 30,000 copies lifetime:
Code:

Year    Average  Title[Studio]
(2005) 139,252  The world of Golden Eggs [PLUS heads]
(1995) 111,559 Shin Seiki Evangelion [Gainax]
(2006) 100,458  The world of Golden Eggs 2nd season [PLUS heads]
(2009) *78,671 Bakemonogatari [Shaft]
(2011) *71,056 Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica [Shaft]
(2004) *68,732 Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed Destiny [Sunrise]
(2006) *61,633 Usavich [Kanaban]
(2012) *60,580 Nisemonogatari [Shaft]
(2002) *58,589 Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed [Sunrise]
(2007) *53,230 Usavich 2 [Kanaban]
(2011) *52,133 Fate/Zero [ufotable]
(2008) *52,016 Usavich 3 [Kanaban]
(2008) *46,147 Macross F [Satelight]
(2012) *45,804 Fate/Zero 2nd season [ufotable]
(2006) *45,367 Code Geass [Sunrise]
(2011) *44,544 Usavich 4 [Kanaban]
(2009) *43,883 K-on! [KyoAni]
(2008) *42,690 Code Geass R2 [Sunrise]
(2006) *42,525 Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu [KyoAni]
(2010) *39,385 K-on!! [KyoAni]
(2013) *37,482  Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 [Xebec/AIC]
(2003) *36,511 Hagane no Renkinjutsuhi [Bones]
(2012) *35,708  Sword Art Online [A1 Pictures]
(2008) *34,601 Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 2nd season [Sunrise]
(2008) *34,274 Fireball [Disney]
(2012) *34,127  Girls und Panzer [Actas]
(2010) *34,108 Angel Beats! [PA Works]
(2011) *33,813 IS: Infinite Stratos [8bit]
(2007) *33,481 Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 [Sunrise]
(1993) *32,839 Umi ga Kikoeru [JC Staff]
(1996) *31,696 Dragonball GT [Toei]
(2011) *31,524 Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai [A1 Pictures]
(2011) *31,019 Persona 4 [AIC]

If we included movies, films from Studio Ghibli and Disney would top the list.

I compared a couple of series with another site that I cannot name here that has sales figures for all shows back to 2000 or so. Their figures matched the ones on Reddit, so I'm guessing the Reddit article is accurate. Sales figures usually come from Oricon.

I think I'm happy to see Fate Zero both seasons selling more than Code Geass. It's not in top 10 but close enough.

Thanks so much everyone! It really helps to know how it works over there. I'm glad NGE is on the lists because that is definitely one of the greats.

I'm also baffled by Golden Eggs. Shocked

That's such an odd thing to say, whether about those titles in particular or almost any other show on the same list. They're both selling extremely well. In this case, they're within the same general range and in practice their "lifetime" sales will tend to continue to slowly increase, even past the point the above list compiled or updated.

If we were comparing Evangelion to anything from Bakemonogatari and below, at least there the resulting gap's large enough to be significant. But the stuff around the middle is too close to make a real difference.
