Now that the Spring 2016 season is over, it is time to pick our favorite waifu(s) of the season. Do not be shy if you have not seen all--or even most--of the anime of the season. We are not pretending to be art critics here, and we are not having our descriptions posted on the ANN webpage: We are here to describe our favorite waifus of the season in the forums. I have only followed a few of the series, but I am certainly not going to hesitate from naming my top 3 waifus of the season.

And to keep up some suspense, I will go from #3 to #1.

Number 3
The number 3 waifu of the season is one whom I would call a dream come true in an adventure in the other world, as exemplified in Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World.

Re: Zero manages to capture what many--though certainly far from all--other world adventures miss: the disorienting effect of suddenly being ripped away your own world and being thrown into an entirely unfamiliar one, where the rules, customs, and currency are all different. Without being familiar with the rules of the new world, it is easy to get down and into trouble.

This is the type of situation in which a person would really appreciate a waifu who is just there for you: One who understands you without your having to prove yourself; one who trusts you without demanding explanations from you. A waifu of this mold really eases the otherworldly adventurer when he is down.

And, of course, we cannot forget the physical aspects of the relationship. As this waifu's role is to be there for you when you are down, there is nothing like a comfortable pair of thighs on which one can rest as a lap pillow: the ultimate luxury of an exhausted and bewildered mind. [1]

And if the waifu is soft and comfortable to cuddle and agrees readily to be rubbed against at any time, then it is an even greater luxury. [2]

Number 2
Some of you may find a repetition of a series in a list of mere 3 length to be repetitive, but I do not believe in diversity for its own sake. Hence, I do not hesitate to name another waifu from Re: Zero as my #2 pick.

Re: Zero belongs to 1 of at least 2 subgenres of the alternate world fantasy genre.

In one type, the protagonist receives one or more special powers, most of which are useful within the confines of his presumably heroic role in the alternate world--and generally recognized as such by the protagonist, the surrounding ones, or both. Examples in this subgenre include Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru, Tenku Senki Shurato, Arata the Legend, and No Game No Life.

In the other type, the protagonist has no special powers--or at least none that is directly useful in his quest--, but he can and must attract helpers to his side so he can fulfill his destiny, and his quirks from our world gives him a strangely magnetic personality in the alternate world. Examples in this subgenre include Red River, From Far Away, Fushigi Yuugi and Genbu Kaiden.

Re: Zero belongs more to the latter, so the protagonist must gather capable allies--who of course double as his waifus--with his quirky personality. As the protagonist himself is weak, it is best when his waifu is a powerful. [1]

But it will not do merely for his waifu to be powerful. As an ally of justice summoned to the world to do good, the protagonist's waifu must be also on the side of righteousness. This is best exemplified by a convenient aura of light surrounding the waifu--the lone beam of moonlight shining down on the waifu to illustrate the waifu's holy aura amidst the otherwise dark house. [2]

As a waifu, this person cannot be merely powerful and good. The waifu must be desirable to the protagonist. A beautiful and youthful face, viewed from the front where the audience steps into the field of view of the protagonist, surrounded by the dreamy sparkles that only anime can generate, perfectly captures the waifu's charm. [3]

And lastly, of course, there is the matter of the meeting with the waifu. Nothing can be more endearing than having the waifu extend a helping hand in the protagonist's hour of need. [4]

Number 1
The last one requires a bit of history for those who are not familiar with the long-running Macross franchise. Originally drafted as a ridiculous exaggeration of the real robot, the franchise has made 1 important element in the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross increasingly prominent: Songs.

In the original SDF Macross, the Earthlings weaponized J-Pop indirectly: They faced a warrior race that had long since lost touch with their culture, so hearing J-Pop from the lead singer Minmei shocked the warriors into disorientation. Otherwise, there was nothing else special about Minmei's songs.

As the franchise received new entries, songs became increasingly powerful: From being able to disrupt mind-control, to communicating with an alien hive mind, to causing and curing berserk syndrome. And fittingly, the singers receive increasing attention--from a bit of movement and some camera focus when she is needed to sing in SDF Macross to becoming almost the main characters in Macross Delta.

But we are not quite there yet. Macross Delta still does not quite have the singers as the protagonists. Rather, the titular Delta squadron assigned to protect the singers receive greater focus. Being pilots of 2 seater fighter crafts, each Delta squad member works closely with a single singer--the most convenient setup for depicting waifus.

As the not quite protagonists, the singer stands on the ground, waving to her pilot as he takes off to engage the enemy like a waifu waving farewell to her soldier boyfriend. [1] And on the ground, the waifu sings--not merely to the battlefield to disrupt the enemy but specifically for the pilot, even dedicating specific songs to him for the right occasion. [2]

As we are in the full thrall of the power of songs at this point in the franchise, the waifu's songs do not merely distract the enemy. It actually gives the pilot greater awareness on the battlefield, as if everything slows down for him. [3] And his eyes can even track a hail of enemy fire and avoid them. [4]

But we are talking about a waifu, not merely a skill boosting accessory. With all the magic of songs, it is entirely appropriate that the waifu shares an empathetic link with the pilot and reacts with his joys and misfortunes. [5]

These are my picks for the top 3 waifus of the Spring 2016 season. What about you?

Well, you only listed one waifu and two husbandoes...

I suppose if I had to pick three I'd go with Ayame from Kabaneri because despite being the sweet oujo type she's got a huge pair of balls and is a good leader.

I'd also go with Mumei from Kabaneri because she's a sweet kid and kicks tons of ass. I don't really care for her casual look, but her battle outfit looks great on her.

Then there's Anne from Anne Happy. Her luck is absolutely terrible and she meets with so much misfortune but you'd never know it by looking at her. To be able to be so cheerful and optimistic no matter what happens to her is something we should all aspire to.

Great little thread. My three favourite waifu's of the season from 3rd place to 1st are as followed. ( I would like to give a special mention to both Rin Suzunoki (Bakuon!!) and Kaede Kayano (Assassination Classroom) who just missed out on a podium finish.

3)Kouko Nosa (High School Fleet)

Coco-chan just charmed me with her ridiculous antics during some of the silly times of Haifuri. The rest of the cast was fun, but Coco just stood out like a sore thumb... in a good kinda way.

2)Ako Tamaki (Netoge no Yome wa Onna no Ko Janai to Omotta?)

First and second could have gone either way, but in the end I think I made the right choice. Ako is absolutely perfect 'Anime' waifu material and she, herself aspires to be a great wife. In real life however, you'd probably end up killing yourself to get away from her after it becomes too much. A messy way to end the relationship...

1)Nico Niiyama (Kiznaiver)

Kiznaiver was my favourite series of the season and quite arguably the best. Whilst all that sadness and sorrow was going down, Nico was the one person that made me laugh throughout. Her personality is bat **** crazy, she acts like a total oddball and that's why we fall head over heels for her. We all could do with a Nico in our lives!

Out of all the anime that I watched this season, I can only think of one waifu for me. That honor goes to Makoto Kowata from Flying Witch. She's a pretty good cook, can sew, and best of all, can do magic. Plus, I really like her gentle and pleasant demeanor.
