Damn. 3 articles in 1 day. It's back again. Unfortunate that this had to happen. I hope Yasuda's friends and family can get through this. Thank you for having an impact on our child/adulthood. RIP

Not a lot of us take the time to think of the art of color designing but it's one of those many cogs that makes the anime machine work. It's amazing she decided to come out of retirement for The Wind Rises. Ponyo was Digitally Painted wasn't it, or wasn't that the point Ghibli returned to ink & paint?

Oh no, what a shame! She was a highly respected Studio Ghibli member, almost on par with Miyazaki (for example, in the making of Princess Mononoke you can see him consulting her about what kind of yellow color to use for some gold nuggets).
R.I.P., Yasuda-san.

They did get rid of their CG department before Ponyo, but that refers to 3D models and possibly 2D computer effects. Digital Paint is not considered CG as it is not generated by a computer. As for Inking, well that's just a digitised copy of the pencil lines, even Cel animation is just a copy of the pencil lines by way of Xeroxing.

As a non artist it's not something I normally notice much, but the colour palette on all the Ghibli films always seemed to work really well.
RIP.

Rest in peace, Ms. Yasuda-san. Your talent made Ghibli films a richly colorful experience.

Rest in Peace. At least she lived to a good old age.

If you guys are really interested in what Michiyo Yasuda was like in detail, then there is a Japanese book written about her and still available from Amazon Japan.

All these deaths in October. It's really frightening in a way.

May she rest in peace. Ghibli truly has lost 1 of their most important workers.
