The original Akira is a beautiful classic and one of my top favorite anime movies of all time but I always wanted to see the entire manga story adapted. I'm really excited that it's finally happening. Now we just need to get Hideaki Anno to remake Nausicaa after he finishes Eva.

A more manga faithful adaption of Akira should be pretty interesting.

If done right, this could be one of the best anime (movie?) series period.

I've literally dreamed about this happening for 20+ years. It's a recurring dream I have and when I wake up I felt silly because this would never happen.
I'm still a little skeptical. I hope this new project happens and the live-action American movie doesn't.

Damn, I'm so ready.

Also, 4K HDR disc of Akira? Hell yes.

How many other old anime have a 4K remaster at this point? There's Char's Counterattack and Gundam F-91, neither of which they seem to be bothering bringing over here (although those are still pretty recent). I know people seem to think there's diminishing returns after 1080p, but maybe big old movies benefit from it?

You have no idea how long I've waited for this announcement! Finally a full adaptation of the manga that had just been sitting there for 30 years, with all its enriched character arcs and events that far surpassed the film in scale. I'm so incredibly excited!!

Otomo has been teasing the new series (i guess?) for a few years now. The 80s film can´t be beaten but seeing a direct manga adaptation has its own rewards. Vol.1 could even use a few more scenes and a rewrite. Kaneda´s pregnant girlfriend just vanishes for example. I wouldn´t even mind a full CG approach, as the manga´s scope is something else.

The 90s Marvel full-color manga is really good and likely a solid taste of how this will look. Easily the best of it´s kind.

I hope the live action happens at around the same time as it might work as advertisement.
