Wow, I would've thought Funi would have grabbed this unless Funi and Crunchyroll are splitting sub and dub like they have with some of their other series.

That's the case. FUNimation is doing a simuldub set for January 24th.
No idea why ANN has failed to report that.

There seem to be more and more shows that are streaming on both. Some of that can be chalked up to AoA putting their shows on multiple platforms, but there seem to be several lately where either CR or Funi will announce it, and then it also winds up on the other.
It's certainly a nice thing for us as customers. I do have to wonder what is going on as far a licensing goes, though. Exclusives seem to be the name of the game when it comes to streaming, and the CR/Funi partnership ended a while ago, but it seems like they are still willing to play nice together. One possibility that comes to mind is that with how expensive licensing is, maybe they've worked it out to where they can get cheaper, non-exclusive licenses.
Whatever is going on, I hope it continues. Following the end of the partnership, the big question I had was: what happens with sequels to shows licensed while it was active? If the answer is that they still wind up on both, then I'm all for it. (Now if only Amazon and Netflix didn't butt in on sequels...)

I wonder if they are being forced to work together on the bigger titles just to keep them away from Amazon/Netflix. In this scenario they would share the bigger titles and compete for the rest of the shows.

I honestly don't believe that Funimation and Crunchyroll are going to keep sharing that many titles going forward. Last year they shared several titles, but assume that non-sequels (like Dr. Stone) were negotiated before the breakup. And I am not counting AoA titles as being shared because Crunchyroll is going to stream them in a month delay.

I'm guessing maybe this series could have been licensed a while ago and the Funi+CR terms still applied to it? Looks like the same happened with A Certain Scientific Accelerator. For the rest of the shows this season, the only shows being shared are Aniplex ones, and even then Funi gets a week to month-long advantage since they're owned by Sony now.

Yeah, I assume there's an existing agreement between Funi and Crunchyroll to share streaming with the Index/Railgun franchise and certain other works (like Fruits Basket and Dr. Stone).
