I don't really watch Netflix all that much, but I do occasionally watch anime on it, so it's at least put to some use. Regarding the originals, a few of you probably know that I liked what B: The Beginning went for even if I didn't explain what all it was, but I can agree that it's not as memorable as I'd have liked it to be. I'm gonna give it a rewatch when the second season drops, though, so maybe second time'll be the charm. Ultraman was neat for semi-regular weekly watching with my uncle on Fridays - we and my dad watched a DVD set of the original Ultraman series I was gifted and had fun times with it - and once you get past the CGI, oh my god even in a streamlined state Kengan Ashura is so g-damn good. Between it and Dumbbells, the Yabako Sandrovich-verse looks like a fun and crazy place that I could feasibly want to live in without fear of becoming collateral damage.

And call me crazy, but I'm actually starting to get tempted into watching Hero Mask. Not sure when I'll do it, but know that I'm gonna bite the bullet on it sooner or later. Dang my recent infatuation with the works of Pierrot...

Hey, I watched all of AICO! It’s nothing exceptional, but I also wouldn’t qualify it as bad in any way. Decent is about the best you can hope for with these Netflix shows...

Lost Song is still the best Netflix original anime. It goes from throwback RPG using singing songs as NUKES to one of the best plot twists I've seen in any TV show.

Devilman Crybaby is just misery porn. It's artsy, but it's also just too much, Aggretsuko could be a better show...if it knows how to develop it's supporting characters (I don't care if Haida is popular, he's just a satellite love interest), and Beastars is actually fine...just don't abuse the inner monologue, please?

Yeah, I knwo ya'll said Lost Song is boring, but it's honestly one of my favorite 2010's anime. Dead serious.

Kengan Ashura was great, continuation when? I haven't seen nearly enough of Gaolong and Muteba.

Am I the only person who watched "Seis Manos"? I mean sure it was animated by Powerhouse, but it was actually produced by VIZ". That was a pretty damn good show.

Somebody, anyone let my daughter Akko out of jail. Let her live her life. And also can we get a DMC Blu-ray already like god damn.

This. Sooooo much this. I purchase arguably-unhealthy amounts of anime disks yet have no interest in paying for Netflix, and it frustrates the shit out of me that I still can't own Little Witch Academia.

I think the problem is they tried to ramp up production way too quickly and had to hire less than talented people (or rather sub contracted studio who had to expand in response and so had to give the project to less than ideal candidate). Let's massively simplify this for discussion sake.

Let's say there's 100 talented peoples for key position (writer, director and so on), well if the industry has only enough job for 40 of them a a time the 60 other people will move on to something else, they won't just stand around waiting for new post to open up.

When Netflix shows up as a additional player they need new people. The 40 people are busy working on the regular anime so they can't be hired and the 60 other have other job, so most of them won't drop those just for this, maybe a few will but not enough to fill all newly created vacancy. So that means they have to hire the less than talented people, and w/e they'll come up with will be of questionable quality.

If they went slower they could have churned trough the less than competent people (make one anime, check the reception, fire people in charge of the bad part, rinse and repeat), retain the good one and slowly entice the old competent one to come back to anime (or "catch" the newly formed competent one).

A.I.C.O was okay. Also, weren't Kabanieri of the Iron Fortress and Kuromukuro Netflix exclusives? The first was excellent and I think belongs on your list. Kuromukuro was on a par with A.I.C.O., I think.

Also, I've heard good things about Dragon Pilot, I think in this very column, but I haven't watched it yet.

Frankly, I don't agree with several of the statements made here (or, for that matter, in previous features) about Netflix shows that worked pretty well for me, regardless of the opinions expressed by ANN contributors.

I don't need every single show to be perfect or meet some arbitrary third party standard in order to qualify as good. Then again, nobody should overly rely on a website or critic to tell them what they will like (or not). It should only serve as a very rough outline, not a rule.

Kabaneri's TV series as an Amazon exclusive, actually. Though I believe Netflix is the only place streaming the sequel(?) movie. Kuromukuro and Dragon Pilot were both series that aired on JP TV, so we didn't include them as genuine "Originals" - we wanted to stick closely as we could to series that released worldwide, exclusively on Netflix.

The quality is all over the place. On the one hand, you have boring shows like Hero Mask, plagiaristic garbage like Cannon Busters, but then you get Aggretsuko, Baki, and Kengan Ashura, which are all wonderfully insane.

Polygon Pictures is the true criminal here if you ask me. They suck. Although judging by Netflix doing their damndest to circumvent the production committee system, I expect more anime in the vein of the latter. People want violence, and adult content, and all that fun stuff. Otherwise they would just watch American cartoons.

Does Ajin not count because episodes aired on Japanese TV 3 days before Netflix locked them up for the rest of the world? Someone's already mentioned Kuromukuro. Also Knights of Sidonia was touted as their first "original" anime even though it was broadcast on several stations in Japan first.

Since they were carping about Little Witch Academia, which had a similar arrangement (Japanese broadcast, then Netflix streaming jail), as if it counts, then those should too. As well as Beastars and BNA, Magi Adventure of Sinbad, and Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan and Children of the Whales (which maybe only I liked - I know TWIA hated it). I think all of those were at least pretty good, though ymmv as to whether or not they were better or worse than that. Smile I wouldn't call them forgettable, since I remember them even with my goldfish brain.
