Nice to see this series isn't shying away from giving these sports girls actual muscles.

That’s what I was thinking.

As I feared the art and visuals are weak. I like fanservice anime, but it has to look to at least look good. A pass for me.

While I do appreciated the girls having abs, yeah something about the visuals make it look like it came from a mid 2000s anime. And this is going back-to-back with that men's gymnastics anime from MAPPA that looks noticeably better which makes it a little more infuriating Iwa-Kakeru seemingly got lesser priority.

Woof

The character designs are great, but that animation looks like shit. It looks cheap as hell.

Since it's a PV (promotional video), it's not as high quality as the actual episodes. Have you guys never seen PV's before?

Don't get me wrong, the anime might just look like shit when it's actually airing. But at least wait til you've seen the finished product before judging it.

Me: “ooh! They gave the characters abs! This might actually be an interesting sports anime!”
*watches PV”
Me: “...ah. Bad animation and a whole bunch of fan service shots. Peace out.”

How can even anime like Free! largely remain free of fan service (LARGELY; at least the PVs are perfectly fine) with sports that show skin but not this? It’s humiliating.

This is considered fanservice, THIS?

Yup!

0:11 straight up the crotch shot. Possibly justifiable, but alternative approaches (from above or the side) would let you see the character's face, normally more narratively important than their taint.
0:16 that's an odd angle and I don't think biomechanically it works very well
0:17 very stiff and cheap animation. Not fanservice, but it shows what the producers thought important. See also 0:34.
0:29 this time we get to see breasts before faces
0:35 the camera is somewhere around knee level to get another crotch shot
0:57 nobody leaves long hair untied going rockclimbing. It's stupidly unsafe
0;60 zooming shots such that her buttocks fill the literal entire screen
1:12 implausible sexualised posture (trust me on this one, it's sexualised)

And so forth. There's more, but that's tge easy to explain stuff: that's a lot of gratuitous (and tbh largely demeaning) sexualisation for a 130 second clip, I think. Plus the actual animation is shit and what we can see of the plot doesn't suggest some sort of sophisticated response here, so the deniable pornography is really the only reason I can see someone watching this. I mean, I love sailing, and if someone made a sailing anime that looked like this I'd probably pass.

I won't waste our times by going step by step through each one, but if you see 1.5 seconds of a fully clothed crotch from between her partly closed legs as they swing and consider it gratuitous and demeaning, maybe you just have a really dirty mind. I never said the animation wasn't bad.

See... we call shots of clothed closed-leg crotches "fanservice", yes. If they're unneeded for narrative purposes, which is usually the case. Shots of unclothed open-leg crotches we call "porn".

This strikes me as a useful distinction and I'm not sure why you're trying to collapse it.

I'm sorry what? Pretty much every show ever made will have shots where you can see someone's groin area, unless they are shot above the waist. There is nothing sexualised about it, it doesn't show her underwear, it doesn't draw attention to it. Hell I wouldn't have even noticed it if you hadn't brought it up. What do you even mean by "narrative purposes", the characters doing a leg exercise, where is the camera supposed to be, the back of her head?.

Geez, I feel like I'm having 'Nam flashbacks to the time when the Free! announcement came out, and male otaku were clutching their pearls, lamenting that anime was dead and that the reputation of Kyoto Animation as the bastion of all moe anime was ruined. Does anyone else remember? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

If the posts criticizing female sports anime are offensive/rude or break the rules of the forum, just report them and go about your day, a mod will make the final call. But let's not pretend that this double standard doesn't happen for sports anime or just anime aimed at women in general featuring an all-male cast (i.e. "If there's no girls in this show, I'm not watching," or "Too many dudes, won't watch," or the classic "Eeew, gay.") We just report it or spin it into something positive (see the latest A3! news post). Mods, if this is considered off topic, feel free to delete/edit this post.

Now, upon actually viewing the PV, it just looks bland and the animation, as previously stated, seems slightly below average. Fanservice seems pretty standard too. That could all change with episode 1, but this show isn't really my cup of tea. It will definitely appeal to others, though. I just wish there was a solid female sports anime series.

Strictly speaking, while this one seems light on fanservice in the traditional sense (i.e. nudity), it definitely has lots of camera angles/positions intentionally chosen to focus on certain body parts. This is a known habit of media-makers--google "male gaze"--that shows up very frequently in everything from anime to Hollywood movies. It's easy to miss because it's so common, but if you watch one of the rare shows that does this to men instead of women (Free! might, I don't remember), you'll be able to see why it bothers some people.

Honestly, though, from the preview, the sex-appeal side of this show looks as mediocre as the rest of it. Any random anime will likely have similar sexualizing shots, though maybe only in a beach episode or whatever. I'm not sure who this is going to appeal to.
