Yes they are basically like twitter trends- the more something is mentioned, the higher it goes. Which is probably why Reylo is the most popular ship (not that it isn't popular on its own, but discourse can only improve popularity ranking)

Why is Naruto suddenly hot? The manga ended 5 or 6 years ago, didn't it? The anime is long done too. Is there some new media that got people interested again?
