Thanks for the review, Rebecca — I’d forgotten this was coming out, and didn’t know CR had it.
I enjoyed the first volume of the manga, and have the second volume on order at my local bookshop.

Always thought it was weird that Saki, who is literally the person speaking the name of the series itself, got the C-plot out of the three leads. Makoto and Ryuji both had significant characters arcs and Saki's interiority barely got any attention at all until the back half. So I'm not surprised Crunchyroll split this into four episodes. To me, this movie really felt like the closure she was lacking and a proper ending to the first season's narrative.

Yes. When the series ended, there was a void in the series with respect to what was up with Saki. Centering this movie on her story was a good choice.
PS., Ryuji is the best wing-man ever.

How important is it to watch the series before watching this film?

Really? While I enjoyed the movie and thought the finale paid off, I was so disappointed by the animation quality. 50% of the film felt like I was watching a PowerPoint presentation, with a 25% focus on the chibi-styled visuals.

I didn't realize going in that these episodes would be all about Saki, who I didn't care for during the series and couldn't care less about after it. I inadvertently watched the 4th ep first, then went back to the 1st. After the 2nd ep, I was done, so I never watched the 3rd.
While not unrealistic, I didn't care for Ryuji getting sidelined, as I was always rooting for him. I mean, if Makoto isn't gay, there's nothing to be done about that, so I guess he got his best outcome, but I still feel bad for Ryuji, and seeing how things turned out for him just left me depressed. It felt like Makoto just threw him over for Saki (weren't he and Ryuji kind of dating? What happened to that?) who only seemed to like him because he was different, while Ryuji had stuck with him through thick and thin for years, only to get dumped so Mokoto could earn his straight cred.
