I imagine this takes less work than remastering an older game, but come on, the original is still playable on modern hardware and has a PC port.

You're the second person I see today saying nearly exactly the same thing, when the game not only wasn't available for the Switch and Xbox, but also not for PC in Japan (due to some weird thing involving Steam). |

What pointless remasters? They wouldn't be doing them if they weren't doing so well. And Sony also has the excuse that they're bringing said games via remasters to PC. |

Pointless since we can already play all the games already. Would be nice to get an actual (proper) new Tales game one day.

So if what someone told me is true, apparently they confirmed that this remaster is based on the edited US version for all regions. That's a bummer. It wasn't sexual content either though I think a few outfits might have been changed. It was mainly an opening scene that's similar, but different enough that it completely changed how you read the scene.

That just seems to be the new norm for all modern remasters/re-releases of games in the age of aiming for the global market. It's just easier these days to make one censored version from the get go than having to later edit things for different regions like they used to. I guess there not much difference for us but it sucks for people in Japan who have to deal with our censorship being retroactively brought over there now. I remember when it was announced Tokyo Mirage Sessions's Switch port would be based on the censored western version and it led to a spike in sales for the Wii U version in Japan for a bit. |

The game is backward compatible, ignoring the PS3 version, as Tales (and Atlus) stuck to PS3 development for half of the PS4´s life. And it´s on PC. The most pointless fake "remaster" of 2025? Curious how they skipped Zestiria but that one is rubbish. Can´t wait for the PS6 remaster of Tales of Arise!
Now that I think about it, Tales still has to make a real current-gen game! Arise is a PS4 title. Maybe once the PS6 comes out... |

Anything to avoid doing the remaster/remake of Abyss I see.

I wish they would localise the older games, including the ones that never left Japan. I'm surprised that they didn't at least do a new release of the first game.

They are 100% going to delist the 'original' so they can sell this one for the updated price of the 'remaster' =/

According to an interview with Famitsu the original plan was to remaster the games in chronological order, but apparently "due to various circumstances" they found it impossible to do just that. Some interpret that as "we lost the source code for the earlier entries", & I guess that would explain why the Symphonia remaster was based on the PS3 version (& its 30 fps cap) instead of the GC original (which ran at 60 fps), but it's also kind of weird that this also seemingly only applies to all of the 2D (or 2.5D, in Legendia's case) entries, and not the full 3D entries. Also, if they really want to offer the old games in some form, I don't see why Bandai Namco doesn't do the bare minimum & work with Sony to re-release Destiny 1, Eternia, & Legendia on PS4 & PS5 via the PS Classics line, or work with Nintendo to re-release the GBA port of Phantasia via NSO. Meanwhile, Japan can still get all of those as well as Destiny 2, Rebirth, & even Phantasia's PSP remake. Sure, they wouldn't be remasters (& they'd be exclusive to certain hardware), but it'd at least be something. |

Considering they're going for Berseria over, say, Abyss, it has to be the case that they don't have the source code for nearly anything before the HD era; at best, they'd have the code for the PSP ports of certain 2D games, which is obviously less than ideal. At this point, I'd honestly expect full remakes of games like Phantasia or Eternia rather than remasters.
They don't think there's enough demand. The higher-ups at big companies are convinced that they wouldn't make enough money to justify such re-releases, as they cost less but also sell less. There's even an interview where the CEO of a company behind several PS1 re-releases where he says he was once told that his company would have to put out a hundred such releases in an unreasonably short amount of time for the publisher he was negotiating with to consider letting them handle such work. |

Honestly, a lot of those "Various circumstances" might be that they have specific standards like, say, HD widescreen, that's a little difficult to do with games intended for the PS2 and earlier. The shared pattern with everything they've released so far (and have announced...or sort of announced a la Xillia 2) is that all of them are either already HD widescreen games or the porting work was done already. But they've almost run out of those with...I guess Zestiria being the last one (and that'd take a lot more work to make okay). I would hazard a guess that Abyss is the easiest of the unannounced ones to work with, given that it's made and framed in a way that means there's probably no shots where the environment just ends past the edge of the screen. The 3DS top screen wasn't full widescreen, but it was more widescreen than a PS2 game, after all.
Legendia, I'm pretty sure has a lot of spots where the environment just kind of cuts off just past where the camera can see and since it's mostly isometric top down, that's a legitimate problem (and the battle maps might legitimately not be big enough). Everything else before that is 2D games made in fullscreen and...yeah, those can be actually hard to remaster, especially if you don't want to make totally new assets and don't have access to the source code. (Yes, Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Eternia have widescreen versions, but since it was for the PSP, that'd require a lot of work to upgrade to HD). The way they've been talking about the remaster project, it sounds like they're releasing them in the order of when the work is completed and since they're doing the simpler ones to do first, it gives them more time to work on the older ones. Symphonia had already been ported a bunch, so it's the simplest, Vesperia started out on the Xbox so that's pretty easy to work with, Graces F had already gotten a port so a lot of the work was done there and IIRC, all the remasters have gotten ported to Unity, so since most of the recent games will have similar programming, that means at least some of the work is easier. Zestiria's weird and buggy enough that it likely is a lot harder to work with. I feel like maybe they got bogged down in trying to figure out how to recreate Phantasia without it being a full remake or how to make it look good in HD without just slapping an AI filter on everything. It likely would have been before the Suikoden remasters were announced and then repeatedly delayed. |

IIRC, they want to remaster/re-release everything, but they're not holding things back to keep it in order. They're just releasing things as they are ready.
