Holy...
Geez, I hope that person will recover well. Then again, the stabbing is non-fatal, so the recovery should be straight-forward assuming there's no additional complication.
You haven't seen sasaeng fans in the world of K-pop, they're much worse then this story. |

I have no doubt that the delulu in K-Pop fandom are just as terrible if not more. But I should remind everyone that AKB48 were once attacked with a handsaw. It's all insane, honestly. |

I've seen much worse in K-pop then a guy attacking an AKB48 member with a handsaw like well you can read this for yourself (I mean I can include more and more if you want). I'm not sure if you're familiar with the 1st gen K-pop group, Baby Vox. But there was a dating rumor started by a either a sasaeng fan of another K-pop group or an anti-fan that ruin the live of Baby Vox's members. I find that rumor to be more damaging then a hacksaw incident done to AKB48 members. |

And this is why idol culture, regardless of the country, is a HUGE mistake. People really believe that parasocial relationships are valid and that if their oshi doesn't love them, then no one should get their love. Plus, the sheer objectification of these girls and guys is a phenomenon that's been going on for centuries in history of music, and it's about time it ended.
And the whole thing about "preserving a pure image" is far too Yamato Nadeshiko for the 21st century (but guys can still fool around; yay for double standards.) Idol culture should be cancelled. Yes, I said it. Not sorry. |

Even if idol culture gets nuked, people will still do wierd shit, it happens Unfortunately. Here is the thing, even if you want to remove objectification or parasocial relationships, it won't remove the issue or reduce the issue. Most people know how to not be creeps. And, objectification of male and female is not really a bad thing, its fine |

Everything are double-edged swords. If you're calling for idol culture to be cancelled, then maybe we should cancelled the internet too meaning cancelling ANN and it's existence in other word you and I would not be here today. Idol culture like everything else is a double-edged sword, if it wasn't for idol culture you wouldn't have K-pop, and without K-pop, you wouldn't have the Netflix-hit, KPop Demon Hunters (which ANN has covered heavily and extensively). So, everything that you see in idol culture, it comes with the territory, that male staffer that got stabbed, it's unfortunate but sadly that's to be expected. Replace HKT48 with any mainstream K-pop idol groups like BTS, Blackpink, TWICE, and it would be the same thing although because K-pop is more mainstream and more high-profile globally compared to their J-pop/J-music counterpart, it would be a bigger deal then what happened to HKT48. |

Well, Idols are entertainers. I have no essentialist argument against the existence of idols. I have no hostility, and no, it had nothing to do with Uehara Ayumu being my pŕofile pic.
But the industry seems more concerned with creating an illusion of proximity and profiting from said illusion, than for the well-being of their entertainers. In fact, that any scandal is enough to ruin a life (mostly, but not exclusively, if you're female) is a great example of this. We need to address these matters. One of the main points, though not the only one, is the destruction of purity cuĺture. |

It's not the Most Dangerous Fans Olympics. You don't have to bring up K-Pop every time something bad happens to a Japanese idol/adjacent staff. |

I'm just glad we didn't get another handsaw assault.

Legitimately, I felt like there was no other point to that person's comment than "well my fandom is crazier" Like come on, two people got stabbed. There was no need to bring that up. |

The irony of posting this on an anime forum where many legislatures and activists groups have said the same thing about anime promoting violence or degeneracy and moved to ban them for the same excuse of safety. This exact argument and logic has been used for many things throughout history. Rock and roll, video games, rap music, etc etc... and that's just people who apply it to superficial things like our hobbies and not more sinister dog whistles and implications as we've seen people do. I know it's common for people to use tragedies to push their agendas and opinions on certain things but it only works so long as it's stuff you don't care about being attacked. Unless you're fine with it being used against anime and other media as well in which case okay then. Anyway, parasocial andies exist everywhere. Twitch streamers have the exact same thing happen to them at places like Twitchcon where they get sexually assaulted or worse so any complaint about idols or purity or all that doesn't mean anything. I'm pretty sure I heard Ariana Grande was also assaulted by some dude at a thing recently too not to mention the crap you see at sporting events all the time. Weirdos exist everywhere. |

As they said, it's not a competition as in "The Most Dangerous Fans"-like TV series. Stabbing, stalking and bullying people over your hobby is wrong. No matter what it is.
Now, in my not humble opinion, the idol* culture encourages parasocial behaviour, and indeed promotes and enhances it. Real people (the performers) stop being human beings and become true idols. The media tells fans, "They are above humanity and they belong just to you". They are not allowed to have a private life, and they better do not hint a love life. 'The more CDs you buy, the more they own to you'". And that could lead to events like that or worse. Yes, I agree the idol culture should be cancelled. I'm not saying we should stop having music bands or singers. I'm sure the world could enjoy music without one, two or three violent attacks instead of 'That's just the way the music industry works'. The record label/agency issues a "Totally regret what happened. Oh, what a world" (followed by, 'Next single in a month — please buy it!'). * Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Andorran, who cares? |

This is not a great comparison. You are correct that people have long attacked controversial media unnecessarily, but idol culture is not "media." Idols produce media but the media itself is pretty tame in terms of violence and sexuality compared to video games or anime. Wanting to cancel idol culture does not mean censoring media. The issue is encouraging the parasocial bond purposefully. Famous people have always been the targets of unfair obsession and attacks, but when you push people to be obsessed so that they consume goods it makes the existing unstable people worse. It doesn't mean we can't have idols, I just think companies need to support their talent and encourage fandom in a responsible way as stuff like hiding their romantic lives to remain a fantasy and pretending that is normal are the things the person wants to cancel and not all idol media. |
