Looks generic, what's the big deal about this series?

It's your generic battle shonen, but with way better established world and power-scaling than JJK IMO. Also, it has better written story than JJK. So far at least.

Outside of being meme'd from the very beginning as "Next Big Thing of WSJ" - to very possibly actually can become the next big thing of WSJ, considering the production totally goes all in with it's adaptation (especially compared to Sakamoto Days)?

Well, it's just decent battle shonen - nothing extremely stellar in terms of story (well, just a bit better than JJK), just a good popcorn action packed stuff.

I stopped reading Kagurabachi, but still, I think that the idea that "its popularity comes from the memes" it just a Western ("not Japanese") thing, and Japanese readers did not think about that at all, but they actually like "John Wick with katanas".

Since the author said they liked the John Wick movies.

I don't know about the manga other than the premise and that there are times the author uses a lof of ink for action sequences

What the others have said. If anything big deal-ish perhaps, it's very stylish, as if it's the main offering or what makes up for the majority of the manga panels. It does have a decent story, and I wouldn't say it's better than JJK (though I wouldn't normally compare the two).

I've been up to date since launch for JUMP love but never once understood the huge hype it had during the first 15-20 chapters, if not for being released during a "lull period" without really big novelty and belonging to a current popular trope. The plot and characters simply don't shake me, but at least there is an interesting art ( not really rare in JUMP ) , especially the kingyo power. As long as the studio focuses on the battle's visuals and lengthens them as much as possible, the anime could be nice.

That tends to happen when spoiler[a series fumbles its ending unbelievably hard.]

Everytime an ongoing jump manga gets people snotty about it being better than their predecessors the story starts fumbling so maybe we should hold on to that longer
