Today, my little cousin came over who is an RPG fan.He likes Final Fantasy but he loves Dragon Quest.I was telling him about the connection of art styles and stories in rpg's and anime.For some reason he will play an anime-like game but won't watch an anime show saying they have no plot and bad art.
Has anyone had this happen??? |

How little is your little cousin? Might be that he doesn't want to read the subs, or doesn't understand the stories in the dubs. Anime generally (well... good anime) has a bit more complicated storyline than the average RPG. |

He's 17. He's older than me I just call him little because he is shorter than me amazingly being I'm 5'7. He understands the stories just hates them. I've shown him all I have, which is not a lot but bad art...I think not. I like both and see the similarities. We are both hyped for Tales of Symphonia which is supposed to be like an anime with the art style and cel-shading. I always thought good RPG's and anime went hand-in-hand. Oh well, guess I was wrong.

Well, which anime has he seen?
Dollars to dimes he hasn't been exposed to a wide enough range of anime to really have a well based opinion, and if he's automatically associating the word with the DBZ's of the world then he may indeed have a point. It would help if you tried some series that are closely related to traditional RPG settings. Berserk, Record of the Lodoss War, Eden's Bowy, and hack//sign are all good titles in this respect. |

If he won't watch it, then how does he know anime has no plot and bad art? I'd suggest he actually give it a chance before he says something like that. As mentioned already, give Berserk a try for story. For art and animation, tell him to watch Cowboy Bebop ( not that Bebop doesn't have a good story).
Most Final Fantasy stories are the same "good vs evil" story every game. I don't get how someone can love it for it's plot and not like anime. |

Well, I'm not so sure in the Grand Theft Auto games your doing that. Fighting and Racing games are a little different too.
It depends on what kind of games you perfer buying as to whether or not it's always seems like it's "good vs evil". Although they do probably make up about half of all games that get released. |

If he says bad art, he's probably too used to Western-style cartoons, I'm guessing.

My mom thinks anime has horrible style art and animation compared to things such as disney. She wouldn't shut up about how "weirdly animated" the Utena movie was when I made her watch it. |

I, personally, know Imcoolurnot and believe me he has nothing in his anime collection that could merit such statements (Except for one DBZ tape that he wouldn't dare promote).
I mean c'mon! The first Berserk tape, the two Evangelion ending DVDs, Akira, the Cowboy Beebop movie, Hellsing, bla bla bla... His cousin surely must be one confused guy!! Just how can you have such a passion for RPGs and not like... *Grasps his head in painful contemplation* Ow..owch *Walks off with head in hands* |

My mom didn't really think much about anime or any cartoons until I showed her "Castle of Cagliostro". She really liked it and she absolutelly loved "Spirited Away"  . She also liked the episode of Cowboy Bebop that I showed her and said it had "great atmosphere".
She went from being annoyed about me playing Japanease music all the time to actually asking me to put some songs on (stuff like the OP of Akira). So, I guess you should just try showing your mom really good mature stuff (not that there's anything wrong with stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho) and she just might change her opinon. Good luck! |

When I think of your question about the similarity between anime and RPG art, I immediately think of Crono Trigger.
By far, my all-time favorite game on SNES, anyone who's played it and likes it should know that the art was done by noneother than the great Akira Toriyama. After playing the game, I soon became interested in anime after seeing DBZ (which he also designed). But of course, DBZ isn't the best example of anime to go buy. So, I agree with Craeyst in his suggestions. Lodoss War is probably as "old school" RPG as you can get. Then, if your cousin wants something a little more up to date, go with .hack//sign. Both titles have good animation, good music, and interesting stories. |

I love Chrono Trigger.One of my favorites of all time.I only have one Record of Lodoss tape and the first two tapes of Escaflowne at Dualsouloni's house. i don't knock him for not liking anime but to say something is crap when it is so closely related to something you love is ludacris. I tried to show him berserk featuring the greatest anime character of all time(see that topic for reasons)Guts but he only wants to "play an anime".

It could be that he perfers the interactivity rather than watching the story unfold. And so he demeans that which he cannot control?
